That swine outbreak was shortly after I started my professional career. Everything happening now is what we feared and started gearing up for. Luckily, it didn’t materialize. What makes this all worse is that we did take it seriously just over a decade ago and it worked. Organizations and institutions made their sick policies much more open and flexible for the swine flu. People were allowed to just stay home if they felt cold or flu like symptoms and it didn’t kill everything. People didn’t just load around skipping school and work. People didn’t get sick at work and just “power through” they’d ent home and rested. And now we’re doing it again all because we “have to return to normal” no matter how stupid normal was.
Even with better remote learning tools, and a proven ability to be productive at home for a number of people, we’ve taken steps backward.
If workers/students can “muscle through” at home, and not infect others but still get some or all of their work done, we should trial that model.
Like you said, it’s innate to want to be both productive and social. Most won’t abuse that system.
