I don’t think it’s fatalistic to acknowledge that we are all very likely going to contract COVID sooner or later; this is now the medical consensus (if I’m not mistaken). Of course, the doesn’t mean we shouldn’t protect ourselves and society at large by getting vaccinated and taking additional steps (masking, distancing, etc.) to slow the spread.
I just recently saw a doctor on CNN say that the vaccine and mask will not help stop the spread of Omicron. I wonder if they have given up or if this is the part where the virus keeps getting weaker and weaker to survive and basically becomes the "flu"?

I view it as being pragmatic and realistic rather than giving up. Again, one can accept that we will all encounter COVID at some point and continue to promote and take steps to prevent becoming infected.

I know that I will feel very upset when my turn comes, mostly because I've been very, very cautious. I'm trying from now to reconcile myself to the fact that it will happen and that, when it does, I can rest assured that I've done all I can to slow the spread and protect myself from a severe case.

If it makes you feel better it really wasn't that bad. I have had stomach viruses that were way more trying. I will say with Delta I was super tired for about 4 days which I have not had with this variant. The worst part is the loss of smell and that meat is off limits because it taste like cleaner.

I responded to the general thrust of your post without really reading this in detail. Are you sure that's what the doctor said? Most doctors are, to my knowledge, still emphasising the importance of vaccines and masks to at least slowing and limiting the spread, even if it can't be stopped as such.

Assuming I have a mild case, my feelings of sadness will be an emotionally driven more than anything. My father nearly died of COVID, so the prospect of getting infected carries a lot of personal baggage for me.

No she said that we should wear surgical mask and still get vaccinated because of it lessening the symptoms but overall Omicron will spread far and wide.

I am sorry for the loss of your father but don't take it personally if you get it. I am sure you have done all you can not to infect yourself or others. I hope you get a pass on this one!!

That's more in keeping with what I would have expected.

I've brought this up before, but if people want to up their mask game, KN95s and even N95s are much more available and affordable than they used to be. They offer more protection than surgical masks do.

Oh, he didn't die, thank goodness! (I think you missed the "nearly" from my last post.) Thanks, however, for your good wishes!

That's about where I'm at. I'm more concerned that my daughter doesn't get it from me. I can work remotely, but missing 2 weeks of school would be really tough for her.

I haven't lost any taste/smell. but the thought of eating meat sounds disgusting to me! I've been subsisting on toast so far. :)

If the goal is to end the pandemic, even a federal vaccine mandate for all won't get you there because there is the rest of the world to consider.
Need to start somewhere. Logistically, it's to hard to do "the entire world" as a single step.

On the other end, just a single town or county is to small. To much interaction with outside groups. Start one country at a time and build out from there. Even one state is probably to small, there's lots of cross state interactions relative to their size.

Eventually (hopefully) we can reach the rest of the world over time then, and there will not be any outside group left to interact with. Or, will there......👾

The pandemic will end once there is herd immunity. If vaccines are now not stopping the spread, you wont stop the spread. The faster it mutates itself down in severity combined with herd immunity is the path to the end of severity.

It doesn't mutate in a predictable way, though.

There's only 1 mutation that's predictable. Over time, it'll become more infectious. Everything else is unknown.

The only reason that's predictable is because between two variants both trying to infect people, the one that's more infectious will happen more often, effectively pushing the other one out by out competing it for speed of transmission.

This does mean that it's unlikely there will be a widespread variant that kills the infected before it has time to spread to others. Since that would limit it's ability to spread better.

But, once it's spread faster to others, any other impacts beyond that stage and what they do to the host, could be whatever. Could be less severe, could be more.
