I think there are so many variables that it makes drawing firm conclusions very difficult. What variant is spreading and what time of year it is dominant also plays a role.

Just look at FL recently. With the same mitigations, after the Delta spike it got to the lowest cases per 100k (swapping with Hawaii and 1 or 2 other states depending on the day) for several weeks. Then Omicron hit and it became one of the highest in a matter of days but still not as high (yet) as NY which has much more mitigation. Then you bring in the variable of the weather in NY is cold and in FL it is beautiful right now so people in NY are more likely to be gathering indoors vs. people in FL right now.
I think the only conclusion worth drawing in Florida is that with Delta, you simply ran out of viable vectors for the variant, whereas with omicron, you have a perfect one-two punch of a six month immunology window closing for the vaccinated + naturally immune from the pre Delta wave and a novel and seemingly more virulent strain. I think the threshold for necessary social measures and government intervention to prevent spread were never truly exercised in this country and have zero chance of being socially, much less politically, viable now.

Wow. Can the hospital even function with that many people out from radiology? MRI techs aren't exactly a dime a dozen.
there’s always someone on call in mri if they’re short. i’m sure they’ll even post some overtime as well. the x-ray dept is very well staffed in general. i heard the # of techs there who are positive are from all shifts. not just 1 particular shift. x-ray was hit hard in the beginning when all of this happened. from doing portable x-rays, there’s a lot of very close & physical contact with patients. we did have agency/traveling techs at the hospital once. i can see it happening again if it gets bad again.

So, old people are expendable?
Nobody is expendable, but the elderly are more vulnerable, and Florida's large retirement population probably contributed to the state's death count being incongruent to their vaccination rates.

There have been posts on this thread that suggested that we should just quarantine the elderly and infirm indefinitely, while the young and healthy should be allowed to do as they please. Those posts were rightly condemned, for multiple reasons.

The statement about not wanting to be at a WDW park on NYE was true for me long before COVID existed.
Controlled madness is what we experienced at Epcot on NYE. A number of World Showcase countries have makeshift DJ, dance areas with our favorite , the China courtyard with the dragon spitting out real flames and heat above the dance floor making the temps get very hot. How MK celebrated NYE alcohol free back in the day was not our cup of tea.

My friend is at MK today. From the pics I wouldn't even want to be there today. Looks like my definition of insanity. One of them is a teacher though and so limited times. I'll take early June over what I see though.

I'd say they must be currently enjoying the 80 degrees beautiful , no rain weather.

Mayor Demings has announced a 3rd COVID-19 testing site to open Thursday at the South Orange Youth Complex - he noted the Barnett Park testing site closed again today at noon with a 5 hour wait for testing.

The 14-day rolling positivity rate for Orange County is 14.60%.

We had a blast at Epcot NYE 2018, it was insane but also very fun. If you go expecting a normal day and expecting to go on a bunch of rides it’s going to be a nightmare but if you go expecting chaos and with an “experience” mindset it’s amazing.

I’d go again in a heartbeat if I wasn’t thousands of miles away.

For what purpose? There's no helpful information to disseminate that can't be posted on a website and social media where more people will see it anyway.

These types of press events are just dog and pony shows to make the person speaking look engaged and keep their face on the local news.
Because there's still a portion of the populations that still gets its news from local tv news. IMHO the more people that information can reach the better
