"Florida on Thursday reported 21,765 more COVID-19 cases and 901 deaths to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.

All but one of the newly reported deaths occurred after July 24, with 78% of those people dying in the past two weeks, according to Herald calculations of data published by the CDC. The majority of deaths happened during Florida’s latest surge in COVID-19 cases, fueled by the delta variant.

It is the largest single-day increase to the death total in the state’s COVID pandemic history.

The jump in the number of reported cases and deaths is due to the newest way deaths and cases are counted. The CDC implemented the change earlier this month, causing occasional one-day aberrations like the 901 additional deaths on Thursday and 726 more deaths reported Monday."

"There were 16,833 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida on Thursday, according to data reported to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services from 256 Florida hospitals. That is 331 fewer patients than Wednesday’s COVID patient population.

COVID-19 patients also accounted for 28.76% of all hospital patients.

Of the hospitalized in Florida, 3,688 people were in intensive care unit beds, an increase of 54. That represents 55.28% of the state’s ICU hospital beds from 256 hospitals reporting data."

I went to look at Florida covid cases and saw this in the news section https://www.fox13news.com/news/flor...9-comes-home-to-find-husband-dead-of-covid-19
I saw that too. And her dogs almost dead from starvation. Humans aren't the only ones suffering because of this disease.

Happy National Dog Day to all of America's pooches. And if your "person" hasn't been vaccinated yet, give them the "face" until they do. You know the face...

How long do bodies stay in morgues at the hospitals? Is it until transfer to a funeral home?

So many things this pandemic has had to make us think about.

Nothing to do with anything, but I do wish we would get to a point in the future where everyone chose cremation.

The laws might vary state to state, but when I worked in NY, the body couldn't be released to the funeral home until the attending physician filled out the death certificate. The process wasn't always quick and easy because you sometimes needed to look up specific information that may have been buried deep within the medical record. So, given how busy these hospitals have been lately, it is possible that some death certificates aren't being filed in a timely manner.

There are probably many other reasons, but that could be at least one rate-limiting factor.

EDIT: Another thought. Given the level of COVID-denialism, is it possible that certain families are demanding autopsies to prove "it wasn't COVID"? I have no idea if this is actually happening, but given that there's usually only one pathologist per hospital and autopsies can be potentially very time consuming, this could also cause a back-up.

I sort of lived unofficially in southern Ontario for about a year. Except for some areas directly susceptible to lake effect weather, I was surprised how snowy it wasn't. The colors brown and beige predominated far more than white.
haha...yup! It is a beautiful area for the rest of the year but November through March can be blah in terms of weather and colour!

It depends on the hospital morgue facility itself…meaning how good it is, basically. You definitely want to stay under the 48 hour mark. Going over that has some unpleasant consequences.

It's always frustrating to feel like you are waiting while others are not, but I do think it was the right move.

Not only to ensure more people got first doses while the variants weren't as bad, but now it means a lot of us have a much stronger second dose response during a much worse variant called Delta.

Dr. Bonnie Henry did mention several times that based on other vaccines with two-dose intervals, plenty of data supports a history of a stronger response from a longer interval.

We have to remember that the short interval is a result of these companies needing to move the trials faster, and they chose the shortest but safest interval they could
Canada has done a very good job on the whole. I have been very proud of our response both by the government and individuals. Now, in Ontario, I wish our leader would get off the pot and institute a vaccine passport. More and more major companies and government/quasi-government agencies have been instituting their own mandates for vaccinations and he just sits there.

Just today the Toronto District School Board, which is huge, mandated vaccines for all staff or anyone working within the schools. Two days ago McMaster University did the same. Peel Region (a huge area near Toronto) started talking about instituting a regional passport.

Our premier seems happy to let all of this happen so he doesn't off his core of social conservatives who are fighting this. In the latest poll, nationally, including Ontario, more than 80% of Canadians want a passport. Get it done already.

I am sure Ontario's version is coming!

💯

Yet I am chastised (as I'm sure others are too) for asking what is the plan as if I am some nefarious alt-media subversive.

This attitude is why we are failing just as much as any limitations of or miscalculations by actual science. And for the record that is not a knock on science. It's the acceptance that we are learning as we go. We will get stuff right and we will get stuff wrong.
I’m a firm believer in a singular, clearly defined goal and timeline. I know it’s not always possible, obviously, but results will be less than ideal. It’s just how it is. Again, it doesn’t mean we stop.

BC saw an immediate uptick in first doses being scheduled once the news broke that vaccines would soon be required for certain leisure activities along with the return of an indoor mask mandate.

I don't know how much this will move the needle but every bit helps.

People are starting to realize they are about to face a whole lot more restrictions in their lives, and the way to avoid them is readily available.
