I love that people are now disputing numbers out of Florida. The madness continues.

If that's the case of a Cat 3 or 4 , FL residents will get in line at the gas pumps, Wal Mart, Home Depot, withdraw from ATM and start boarding up their homes and officials advise if they don't mandatory evacuate, to write down their social security numbers on their forearms for easier identification.

Everyone here knows I’ve been very critical of the government in FL throughout this pandemic, but in this case something is very wrong and concerning. The difference between FDOH numbers and the CDC numbers was huge. FL makes up 20-25% of the National cases. If the CDC numbers for FL are overstated then the National numbers are highly impacted as well. Decisions are being made based on those numbers so they need to be as accurate as possible. If we lay the politics aside all people should want to know what the correct numbers are even if that means they look better or worse than we thought or were hoping for.

The CDC states that their numbers may differ from the state DOH numbers and that people should defer to the DOH as being more up to date.
Yea we def know.

Here's an interesting basic science update that I learned at a conference call today. And it might help clarify some of the more confusing points of conversation on this board.

The difference between a mild and severe COVID illness often comes down to the location of the virus. The port of entry for infection is almost always the upper airway, mainly the nasal passages and sinuses. If the infection stays here, the symptoms are usually mild. However, if the virus replicates in sufficient numbers, it can then spread to the lungs, which triggers far more severe illness.

The mechanism of the vaccines largely explains why vaccinated individuals can still have a mild illness, but rarely experience a severe case. The vaccines indirectly trigger production of a specific class of antibody, IgG. IgG can easily penetrate the blood-lung barrier, and hence line the alveoli as a sort of protective layer, but it penetrates through the nasal mucosa much less readily. Vaccinated individuals can still potentially stop the infection in the nasal mucosa, but the defenses are much less densely distributed than in the lungs.

So, this largely explains the mild breakthrough infections and why they much more rarely progress to severe disease compared to unvaccinated individuals. The vaccines were really designed to stop the virus in the lungs, not necessarily in the nose. That they still do prevent symptomatic, mild infections in most individuals was just an added bonus.

Bottom line- get the vaccine.

So the latest arguments currently being pushed to cast doubt on vaccines and mask wearing:

“The vaccinated are spreading the virus so don’t blame people who don’t get vaccinated for spreading the virus.”

“COVID is never going away so why bother getting vaccinated or wearing a mask?”

“Mask wearing doesn’t really help that much so why bother? Wearing a mask is such a pain.”

“Gee, it seems that vaccines are awfully risky for pregnant women. I’d think twice.”

“Calling people out for not getting vaccinated is political.”

“Gee, the numbers don’t line up so someone must be lying. Just proves you can’t trust statistics or the government agencies that provide them.”

“Some people in WWII faked their rationing cards, so why should anyone bother to do the right thing to fight a global pandemic?”

“People will find a way to get around any rules imposed, so why bother imposing any rules at all?”

“Other countries aren’t vaccinating everyone so why should we blame Americans for not getting vaccinated?”

As someone who has to send his children into the epidemiological hot zone that our schools in Florida have become, these sorts of arguments are tiring, banal, childish, nonsensical and downright destructive.

They are prolonging the pain and suffering for everyone, including quite possibly someone you know and love.

So knock it off. Every minute you continue with this nonsense, COVID continues to spread.

Stop acting like petulant children who refuse to eat their vegetables and start being part of the solution.

You know what's funny?

Eh. I’m not really seeing much of this pushed around here.

Or people just don't want to get the vaccine and they are under no obligation to do so.
If you are so worried about your child in school, tell them to mask up. There have been schools open all across the county, during peak times in other areas and those kids managed just fine. If you are still worried then take some responsibility for your own child and homeschool them. Otherwise suck it up and deal with people not getting vaccinated. Do what you need to do to protect yourself and yours. Stop relying on others to do things for you.

"Public health" doesn't work without the full participation of the public. Especially during a pandemic.

I made a flight with no change fees and cancellable hotel for September in Orlando. I am not worried too much about getting sick as I am prob going solo, am vaccinated, and planning on wearing a mask everywhere. I just think it would be a bad look among work and family to go to a place with that much spread currently. And I really don't know how work would handle willingly going to Florida if I did end up testing positive.
Not sure why you would volunteer to work that you went to Florida. We always keep our out of house plans on the QT except for those who need to know, like someone watching the house, getting the mail, etc.

that is becoming less and less true. Nobody will be forced to get a vaccine but over time more and more employers will require it and in time schools and likely even some leisure activities like cruises and places large groups gather. If people don’t want to get vaccinated they are free to make that decision but they may be limited on where they can work and what they can do. It’s their choice still.

Exactly! We should stop punishing people for drinking in driving, if you are afraid of being killed by a drunk driver you can stay home.
