that's actually the next group we'd be waiting on. 12-15 is just waiting on approval. Been over 3 weeks and getting anxious to get this started for a lot of middle and HS kids.

That's good news for 5-11. But hopefully the 12-15 crowd is sooner.

We have flown a few times in the past year and the flight experience is one thing I really hope does not go back to the way it was before. I love when you get on the plane they handed you a bag with a snack, a bottle of water, and a sanitization wipe. It was great and I'm happy to eliminate the attendants traipsing through the aisles.

They already submitted the trial results and applied for an amendment to the EUA for 12-15. The thought process seems to be that the FDA will approve any day now for that group. We have enough Pfizer doses available to do all of those kids immediately. Good stuff
I am really hopeful that the 5-11 group gets done by end of Summer so all school aged kids can be done by shortly after the school year starts.
Yes, it's been oddly silent. Not sure it will be required for mere extension of the EUA, but, to my knowledge, the FDA advisory committee hasn't even scheduled a meeting to give their opinion. Maybe we will get a surprise and sudden approval for 12-15 but it almost "feels like" approval is still many weeks away.
Given the rapid decline in vaccination, I'd expect there to be some pressure to open up to younger ages.

Yes, my working assumption is that 12-15 EUA is on its way and then the next group. Sorry for glossing over it. My thinking is that with schools being out for summer that cases should keep declining, combined with ramping up vax rollout targeting young adults over the summer. I believe that the US is well-positioned to return to some semblance of normalcy sooner rather than later, and that public officials aren't signaling yet out of an abundance of caution. Georgia never will catch up to Israel.
Once you get away from Atlanta and its suburbs, mask wearing plummets.
We went to a large indoor (not crowded) antique mall in the country, a bit more than an hour outside of Atlanta. Only about 10% wore masks.
Went to get a bite to eat at a nearby chain restaurant. Most wore masks but typically only until they got to their tables. To go to the bathroom or leave, only about half bothered to put their masks back on. The good news is that the restaurant employees all wore masks, and the restaurant itself was still spacing tables and using partitions.
When I went to get my second dose 2 weeks ago at a nearby university, there were hundreds of unused vaccine appointments in the afternoon.
Here's where Georgia is at the moment. A very high vaccination rate for those 65 and over, but it plummets for those under 55.
It feels like a lot of Georgia under the age of 65 doesn't care what the CDC (or a Republican Governor or a Democratic President) says.
On the plus side, tomorrow is the 14th day since my second dose!

By end of the summer and early fall we will see more back to normal as masks and social distancing will be gone forever as kids are getting vaccinating, Halloween will be much better along with Thanksgiving and Christmas.

My one concern is that with school out, older kids will have more opportunity to socialize without being careful.

Ah follow you totally! There are times I post and am like, made sense to me lol. I am hoping for one shot before we vacation this summer and then both before camp in July. Hopefully by mid Aug more kids can be vaccinated for schools. We are done before Memorial day here so not sure if we'd get any clinics available or not.

True, the DDs summer day camp is limited to 2021/2022 1st-7th graders this time. Kindergartens use to be able to enroll, but they are attempting to keep the same girls there for summer. Boys & Girls club is limited to 1st-5th graders, so more will have to find alternate activities, childcare, or home alone. The summer sports programs are all open here as well. Could be alot more kids mixing that before. And if the local trend of cases being traced to the sports activities continues, it's gonna be a long summer.

Seems like older Americans are sufficiently scared of the virus to get the vaccine regardless of their political beliefs. After a year seeing their friends and peers dying, they know Covid isn’t a hoax.
But younger “Covid is a hoax” Americans still don’t see the virus as a real threat, so are refusing vaccines.
I’m not super hopeful it will happen, but maybe there will be a shift towards stronger carrot/stick that will actually a further push towards vaccination.
Or, not that I’m hoping for it, but maybe you’ll get some major outbreaks in low vaccination communities that will push rural governments to push vaccination more aggressively. That’s a very realistic possibility come October/November with extraordinarily low transmission in high vaccination communities, but significant outbreaks in other areas.
The opposite side - success: San Francisco, 1.5 million people. 72% of adults already vaccinated. Cases down to about 30 per day.

And those don't even account for high-schoolers. Once I hit 13 and wasn't afraid of walking long distances alone, I was basically never home even if my mother was working.

The sports activities around here worry me too. Lots of confirmed spread this Spring. That’s why I really think it‘s crucial to get the 12-15 approved ASAP. That will make a big difference. Right off the top if we can cut the available spreaders in half that should be a big help. I know some don’t agree and think getting kids vaccinated isn’t important, but as a parent of a kid that age I couldn’t disagree more.

Mine are 10 and 15. I'm super eager to get my oldest vaccinated just because of the situation at school with all 1300 kids back full-time. My youngest will be vaccinated too, but I'm not as worried about him as his class is only 6 kids, and his exposure to adults is limited to as few people as possible.

My understanding is that our school district did have some cases with sports teams. But, the school district also had slots reserved at a mass vax site. DS (17) just got second shot via local hospital. And many of his classmates are getting vaccinated. Masking, 3 ft distancing, staggered block schedules, and outside lunch are in place at school.

I wouldn't say oddly silent. It's been 3 weeks. Not sure when we will see it but most think any day now. I expected it to take several weeks. I'm just impatient.
Difference is this year at least some of the HS kids will be vaccinated. That's where we had more of our spread vs middle school even with sports. Though ask me about a stupid family doing a stupid sleep over that took some kids out into quarantine due to gym class.

They aren't even serving lunch at my son's high school because with all students back, it wasn't logistically possible when needing to allow for distancing. Instead, they're giving any kid who wants some lunch in to-go boxes on their way out the doors to come home. (Free lunch was opened to any student who wanted it, thanks to federal COVID dollars...it was supposed to end on Jan 1st, but they extended it until the end of the year.)
