No comments about Scotland going back into what the West calls "lockdown" until February, starting at midnight?

No comments about the rest of the UK expected to join them with PM Johnson speaking at 8PM? (~90 minutes from now)

Sorry my morning was spent trying to get my mother in law an appointment for her vaccine to watch international news. I did get her in. Took 3.5 hours.

I watch Johnson as much as Trump which is pretty much never....

And It's largely being ignored in Scotland, Cairngorm Mountain is a "shut down" ski resort that is basically operating on volunteers and people jumping barriers. Lockdowns are actually having the opposite effect in a lot of the rural areas.

Had not heard that. Thanks.

Now when you add in having a negative test before coming home and not getting Covid relief money for quarantine many Canadians will no longer be traveling til the advisory is over.
I think that is the whole purpose of the $500? To limit international travel? Spend the funds in country?

Here's the information from the Desantis presser this afternoon -

“To that end, I am directing the Florida Division of Emergency Management to partner with the Florida Department of Health to identify additional sites to administer the vaccine and to be open 7 days per week, including the conversion of state-supported testing sites and partnerships with places of worship in underserved communities. I am also directing the Division to hire additional nurses to support these sites and accelerate vaccinations in Florida’s over 3,000 assisted living facilities. We will continue to build on these efforts in the coming weeks.”

"ORLANDO HEALTH VACCINATION SITES

Today, Orlando Health announced the opening of the following community vaccination sites:

o Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital

o Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital

o Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies

o Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital

o Orlando Health South Lake Hospital

o Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital

o Bayfront Health St. Petersburg

  • Orlando Health has the capacity to administer over 10,000 vaccines per week. As is the case with all vaccinations in the state of Florida, vaccines will be reserved for individuals 65 years of age and older, frontline healthcare workers, staff and residents of long-term care facilities and individuals hospitals deem to be extremely vulnerable to COVID-19.

  • To receive a vaccine at one of the Orlando Health locations, please visit vaccine.orlandohealth.com to register."

He also said this about hospitals distributing the vaccine -

“Hospitals that are not doing a good job of getting the vaccine out” will lose their allotment of vaccines, DeSantis said.

My question is how will this be enforced? I'm seriously asking because after this morning I'm really mentally not in the mood to look up international lock downs?

I ask because here we had a stay home advisory or whatever called in my county from just before Thanksgiving until Dec 18th. We took it seriously as always, but not all did. Numbers slightly improved here though.

A quick little anecdote about my concern that rate of people who are willing to get the vaccine is going to be much lower than I had hoped and that if the powers that be use case rates instead of vaccine availability as the metric to eliminate restrictions, we are nowhere near the end of the tunnel.

I was talking to a guy that does custom woodworking for me. He is in his early 70s and Jamaican (I mention that because of the stats that COVID disproportionately effects minority communities). He told me that he's not sold on the safety of these vaccines, thinks the testing was rushed and doesn't want to get it anytime soon. He also reads the push to get the elderly to get it first as an indication that they want to use older people as Guinea pigs instead of the reality that they want to make it available to the most vulnerable.

I told him that my wife took it hoping that it would make him more comfortable since he both likes her and respects her. He still said he wants to wait until many people have gotten it and he can see the serious reactions people might have.

This is just a regular guy. He's not an anti-vaxxer or conspiracy nut. He's an intelligent man. I don't know his politics except that I know he voted for Obama so he's certainly not a right wing extremist. It was disappointing to hear this reaction from somebody like him.

All the more reason to use vaccine availability as the metric to eliminate restrictions. I respect an individual's decision not to protect himself, but the clock is running on his ability to expect me to do it for him. Others may disagree, especially here where people seem more comfortable with restrictions, and I respect their opinion on the issue.

Yeah. Pardon me while I lock down for the third time. Although unlike the second one they’re treating this a bit more seriously.

The biggest take so far is unless things change the NHS will probably be overwhelmed within 3 weeks.
what exactly is going on over there?? Is it new variant driven??? We are bad here in the states right now, based on what's happening over there are we going to get worse???
