I actually took the new saliva Covid test this week. Had a bit of a cold (I was negative), but with some symptoms and a free testing site 5 minutes from my house it seemed the prudent thing to do. The test was quite easy (<10 minutes to fill out the paperwork and take the test) and nothing up the nose.

Someone in NYC had anaphylaxis taking the Pfizer shot.

The Flu vaccine has a 1.35 cases per million doses.(https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26452420/)

A few days ago the Dr. Thomas Clark of ACIP COVID-19 Vaccines Work Group provided some slides in respect to the cases of anaphylaxis after people received a Covid vaccine:

December 18*, 2020 – CDC has identified 6 case reports of anaphylaxis following Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine meeting Brighton Collaboration criteria for anaphylaxis – Cases were Brighton Collaboration levels 1 or 2 – Additional case reports have been reviewed and determined not anaphylaxis
December 19** – 272,001 doses of vaccine have been administered
So it is happening statistically much more than with the flu shot. (i.e. Covid Analphylaxis is 22.05 per million).

I would still say to most people I know, get vaccinated, but then follow CDC guidelines for post vaccination observation: (https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/info-by-product/pfizer/anaphylaxis-management.html)
CDC currently recommends that persons who receive a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine be observed after vaccination for the following time periods:

  • Persons with a history of anaphylaxis (due to any cause): 30 minutes
  • All other persons: 15 minutes

People have not died from the reaction and all recovered, people die from having Covid. The problem will be getting low risk younger population vaccinated when they hear the stories of reactions.

I am sure in time the statistics will become more clear as more people are vaccinated. The rate of Anaphylaxis after Covid vaccination is about 1 in 45000; so the Phase 3 study would likely not have caught this even if certain groups were not excluded from the study.

The US number of people vaccinated jumped to 1,008,025 as of this morning. There are also over 8M additional doses distributed and ready to be used.
Nice. Ohio only vaccinated 1300 people yesterday - I hope that number jumped today. no idea why we're being so slow compared to other states.

It could be reporting delays. Even that CDC number is likely higher by now as the note at the bottom of the page says the administered number gets reported by a healthcare provider to the state 72 hours after vaccination.

There is a 1-day delay in reporting, but it is still slow. There were a few articles on the subject: of the initial doses they only sent some to hospitals, the rest were reserved for nursing homes, who couldn't start giving the shots until 12/21 or 12/28 depending on which vaccine. I understand the reasoning, but I would have made a different choice in their shoes.

Surprising to hear. All of my friends who work at hospitals and with ltc have already been vaccinated here. I got the vibe it was going rather quickly and just haven't read news. Last health care worker friend got theirs just now.

An interesting add, my one friend who got theirs today was Moderna's in central Ohio.

Another interesting add, a college suitemate of mine is in another state. Works in surgical portions of the hospital. They were telling me a doctor at their hospital was in a trial. Reported joint and muscle pain after shot, but no other symptoms (no arm pain really which is what my friend are reporting who were vaccinated this past week)and swore had the real deal from the joint and muscle pain. Nope, placebo. In short some reported side effects have to be either normal body aches and pain or psychosomatic. I wasn't about to use muscle & joint pain, or fatigue, or headache as a legit side effect as those can be caused by other things.
