Lockdowns? I thought we moved on to how the vaccine won’t affect current mitigation efforts.
It only came back up as I mentioned how where I am in Ontario Canada starting the day after Christmas we are being locked down again. Our ICUs are filling up and people are still having their family gatherings when told not too.

According to InPark Magazine, InPark Magazine – Former Disney Parks executive Philippe Gas named CEO of Qiddiya, Saudi Arabia’s “Capital of Entertainment, Sports and the Arts”, Philippe Gas has left Disney for Saudi Arabia. Does anyone know who is taking over his former position at the Tokyo Disney Resort?
Restrictions or not, this incredible Saudi Arabia project is full speed ahead led by a former Disney exec. Disney can only dream of an expansive project like this.

Seems like more precaution than anything else. Especially given that this is relatively new and we don't know everything about it yet.

Yeah, exactly. Last thing they want is for this new stain to become widespread and then find out that previous infection/vaccines don't protect you from it.

9 months and 2,400+ pages and people are still going to extremes. Nobody expects any of the restrictions put in place in the US to make cases go to zero. That was never the intent. The vaccine is coming and that’s great, but we can’t just throw our hands up and say all bets are off, do what you want now. The vaccines are a miracle, but with a little self control and discipline we can help get things back to normal way faster. If everyone buckled down and followed simple recommendations now and also got the vaccine when available the cases could be at the point where restrictions aren’t needed anymore by Spring. If cases stay as high as they are now the vaccine will work eventually to reduce to an acceptable level, but it’s going to take more time.

For the economy, the best thing would be a return to normal faster. The parts of the economy that are heavily damaged right now (travel, leisure, restaurants) are not going to get healthy by being more open now when a large number of people just don’t participate. It’s a false narrative that restrictions are killing the economy and having none will help. The pandemic has killed the economy (or at least part of it). For example, take WDW. They are much better off if everyone follows recommendations and also gets vaccinated and they can fully open by Memorial Day vs having a smaller number of people able to eat in their restaurants now and visit their parks but then losing another summer if it takes longer to get back to something similar to normal. If the government wasn’t so broken we’d have some form of bail out package to help businesses get over this hump.

I think in some cases people point to the economy as a reason to remove restrictions but in reality they just want to be able to do what they want to do. In some cases maybe it’s a lack of understanding of economics (unlike some others here I don’t think you need an advanced degree in economics to understand the basics of supply and demand and macro economic conditions). When the dust settles on this pandemic the real interesting study will be what the economic benefit was if any of not having any restrictions. If it turns out that a place like FL has no meaningful economic advantage long term over states with more hands on mitigation plans it will be hard not to look at additional cases and deaths and wonder if that wasn’t a mistake. That’s years from now anyway, but will be an interesting study.

Not shaming. How many times has this happened yet people still go?

I have friends who had a similar situation. Mom and dad tested positive a few days before they were supposed to leave. The kids never got it. It sucks to have to cancel, but what choice do you have. Just move the trip back and give the kids the news you are still going but it will just be a few weeks later. In my friend’s case the kids were older so maybe easier to understand than a 4 year old.

I’m not sure about the timing in this story. Would they be beyond the quarantine period required? If the kid tested positive on Wed (12/16) they would need to quarantine for 10 days which would be over on 12/25 if you count the 16th as day 1. The new quarantine rules for exposure to someone positive is 7 days (with a negative test) so if the rest of the family is retested 7 days later they are clear as well. So they could probably still go assuming nobody else gets sick. They do run the risk of someone getting sick while on vacation. That recent story of the guy dropping dead on the flight home comes to mind. I wouldn’t want to be far away from home and get sick. Tough call, but I think they could still go without violating CDC guidelines.
