High numbers across the board. Anyone think the Governor will consider pulling back? Remember it was back on June 26 that he announced closing bars and restricting restaurants and that was a spike to less overall cases (9,564) back then. Here’s @DCBaker post from that time. Percent positive was higher and it was a more sudden big jump up, but is there a point where he pulls his head out of the sand or is he all in at this point? Just curious to see what some people who live in FL think will happen.

He is all in, he will never order closures or ask people to wear masks

Except he has asked people to do the latter, just never mandated it and basically said that he doesn't believe mandates are the way to get people to do it.

BTW, last week when I was in PA, I saw less mask compliance than I do anywhere I frequent in FL.

I don’t know where you were in PA, but masks really aren’t an issue anywhere near me. Its not even questioned by anyone outside a handful of fanatics. I haven't been in a store or a doctor’s office or any public place masks are required in the last 6+ months where I haven’t seen compliance. Kids where masks all day in school and it’s not an issue.

Nope. We're going to ride these numbers into the Florida sunset.

Best chance we have is for counties / cites to pull back what they can, but they are still limited by Tallahassee.

Do you know if there's county-level data for this yet? Will be helpful to see things like % of a county population vaccinated in the different areas of the state.

Twitter thread I've been waiting for. This is the Seattle guy who has been tracking the genome changes since the beginning.

Synopsis.

1. We do need to watch something like this UK mutation (btw, the South Africa mutation is a different mutation, so they are watching that one closely too).

2. The immune response the Pfizer / Moderna vaccines are producing is so powerful that it will likely take a large set of mutations for the virus to evade them in a significant way. However, smaller drops in efficacy would not be unexpected.

3. Over time, we likely will have to update the vaccine to include newer variants. But this is not influenza in terms of how fast and specific the virus is mutating in a way that is likely to evade the vaccines.

Most experts are using this to remind people why the other steps we are taking are so important (staying in your bubble especially). The more bodies the virus has a change to infect, the more mutations you would expect to find. Don't let the virus win the lottery by having so many tickets. So sure, you may recover just fine, but maybe your body was an incubator for a problematic mutation. This one, they think might have been from a patient who had a longer, chronic infection. Stop the spread, stop the mutations. But you can already hear the howling from the "rooting for the virus" people about how nothing we do will matter, and it's just government trying to scare people.

This will be very interesting to watch. A science lesson right in front of us.

It will be interesting to see the science behind all of this.

The part that concerns me is the part about "its just government trying to scare people". Even here in Canada we have that issue already. I'm afraid things are going to get much worse before they get better.

Agreed. Mask compliance in the area I live in , bucks county, is fantastic. Surrounding areas, including Philadelphia is also great. Can count on one hand the amount of people not abiding in the last few months. Have no idea where he was visiting.

We have other problems like people getting together for holidays and private parties and stuff, but masks are not something I see anyone even really complaining about. It’s just part of life these days. Most people have accepted that it’s a cost of having stores and schools and as much stuff as possible open.

Pull back what?
If you look around the country the majority of places that have seen a spike in cases during this second wave have implemented some form of increased restrictions. Some places that were hesitant to do so mandated masks, many places closed bars or put restrictions on indoor dining, some have gone even further. I don’t really expect anything to happen in FL now, but I am just curious to see what people think is the breaking point before some action is warranted. The case level is actually higher than end of June when the Governor wavered and closed bars and limited restaurant capacity. Maybe he should at least stop fighting the localities when they are trying to mandate masks or limit bars and indoor dining.

But what about the 1.5 million people flying into Orlando next week. They need that money.
