We are up to 22 cases in the district since last Monday but almost all are in the HS and most probably came from kids getting together for Halloween parties and other things not really allowed.

Correct...but does that matter?

We are also 2 weeks removed from “jersey week”...where most (like me) did not travel - which is typically done round here - but it was documented and observed that many did the trek down the east coast. So I expect those numbers to grow through at least thanksgiving...and the plug will likely be pulled.

It is what it is. Stupid is as stupid does.

We've had limited in-person since Labor Day, with kids phased in slowly over the subsequent six weeks or so. We'd had fewer than 100 total student cases in the district, but there were 40 last week.* There are more than 20,000 students, but still that's a big jump. No cases at our school though so I feel very fortunate.

I'm hoping things don't take a turn after the holidays.🤞In-person leaning has made a world of difference at our house, that's for sure.

*Edit: the "vast majority" of cases have been linked to out-of-school activity. The health dept has only identified seven schools that have had in-school transmission. That's encouraging at least.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is Jersey Week?

Forgive my ignorance, but what is Jersey Week?

All the schools in New Jersey have a 4 day weekend the first or second week of November (it’s technically for the convention of the New Jersey education association...which of course didn’t even happen and few care about anyway...), so a large amount of people jump ship and bag the week. It’s filthy crowded in wdw the last 10+ years that week...that is a big reason why.

Deaths are just a lag in reporting....or the hospitals lied about number of Covid patients to get paid more....or the deaths were all motorcycle accidents that just got classified as Covid....or they are all old people who would have died soon anyway...did I miss any?

...Florida had it figured out in April.

Other than that...you got it.

I've heard stories about Halloween parties being a problem around here. We have 62 students and 47 staff currently out with covid (out of 11,200/2000- it's a big district). cuulative is ~140 students, most high school. %-wise it's not huge, but enough to be alarming.

Again, a good thing is that they haven't traced any spread to in-school activity itself.

Testing news -

"Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for the first COVID-19 diagnostic test for self-testing at home and that provides rapid results. The Lucira COVID-19 All-In-One Test Kit is a molecular (real-time loop mediated amplification reaction) single use test that is intended to detect the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19."

"The Lucira COVID-19 All-In-One Test Kit test has been authorized for home use with self-collected nasal swab samples in individuals age 14 and older who are suspected of COVID-19 by their health care provider. It is also authorized for use in point-of-care (POC) settings (e.g., doctor’s offices, hospitals, urgent care centers and emergency rooms) for all ages but samples must be collected by a healthcare provider when the test is used at the POC to test individuals younger than 14 years old. The test is currently authorized for prescription use only.

The test works by swirling the self-collected sample swab in a vial that is then placed in the test unit. In 30 minutes or less, the results can be read directly from the test unit’s light-up display that shows whether a person is positive or negative for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Positive results indicate the presence of SARS-CoV-2. Individuals with positive results should self-isolate and seek additional care from their health care provider. Individuals who test negative and experience COVID-like symptoms should follow up with their health care provider as negative results do not preclude an individual from SARS-CoV-2 infection."

Wonder what the production potential and street cost is on something like this??

“There were people who got infected at WDW”. Thanks, that’s what we needed, some solid data...

There were some people who got infected at the grocery store, there were some people infected at the liquor store, or the gas station, or the pharmacy, or the dentist, or the doctor, or the vet, and so on...

I would like someone show real data showing that WDW is a major spreading location...
It’s right there beside the data showing that nobody has ever been infected at WDW.

Rumor has it that outdoor dining could be nixed if things get worse....so highly likely.

Fear is such an incredibly effective means of controlling people. The way we're handling this will be studied for decades if not centuries.
