My state has had a mask mandate since May 1 and virtually everyone I see is wearing them in public. Our numbers are going through the roof because people are getting together at private gatherings and in homes. I highly doubt they’re wearing masks at those gatherings despite the fact they would probably provide at least some protection.
Private gatherings at homes with a lot of eating and drinking. Don't see a lot of mask wearing in those gatherings.

Yeah, I guess I was just meaning in comparison to before. I guess people just got tired of trying.
I think it has a lot to do with the weather and people getting together in private spaces. Florida has seen a rise in cases recently but nothing near the multiple of places like Illinois where there were still tighter restrictions, especially compared to Florida. In Florida you can still have comfortable outdoor gatherings and parties to try and be safer (same for California which has also seen some increase).

Basically a lot of the same reason that the flu and colds spread in the winter. The more people are in indoor spaces without good ventilation, the easier it is for any virus to spread.

Bottom line is that viruses exist to spread from host to host. The only way to really slow down the spread without a vaccine is to keep people apart from each other which requires severe restrictions on freedom of movement and gathering. Even many of the "blue" people will only put up with so much.

Nor would they be all that effective. Even if you accept the premise that they capture some percentage of droplets and keep them from traveling as far, they do nothing for aerosols. People in a private gathering are likely to share a confined space for many hours. Those aerosols and even droplets (to whatever extent they are limited by the face coverings) will build up over time if the space isn't well ventilated. Most homes and apartments don't have much air exchange with fresh air and don't have HEPA filters.

So, I conducted a meeting tonight with colleagues: Six of us in an enormous room with tables and chairs 10 feet apart.

One colleague shows up and realizes he's without a mask and is truly embarrassed and wonders what to do. I tell him we're all separated, don't worry about it.

However at the end of the meeting as everyone masks up and heads out, he mingles among them. SMH

I am glad my company has strong mask rules, you are required to ware a mask the entire time you are in the building unless eating or drinking, or are alone in an office with the door closed.

No one has an extra in their pocket? I sometimes carry one in case the loops break

Yesterday was the first time since the mask mandate started that I saw someone enter a store without a mask.

It was a Crate & Barrel and a woman walked in the door with the “masks required” sign, into a store where everyone was wearing a mask and approached an employee in a mask to ask about an order. Totally oblivious.

Another employee gave her a mask, saying “everyone needs to wear a mask - you can have this one.” The woman put on the mask mumbling something about leaving hers in the car.

You’d think she would have gone back to the car for it if it was a simple matter of forgetting. Seeing everyone else wearing one should have been a pretty good reminder. 🙄

I think Papa Smurf would get them all in line....even jokey 🎊. Only Gargamel would resist.👺

The vast majority of people really don’t care that much about politics. There are extremes on both sides and they think everyone else thinks like they do. With Covid I think most people‘s point of view comes from their personal situation and not some pre-determined political directive.

I wish Americans were tough enough to handle more than a couple months of inconvenience.

This has been more than “a couple months” of inconvenience. We’re about to enter month nine, with no definitive end date in sight. Most people I’ve seen in public have complied with wearing masks and social distancing. Yet the number of cases is still skyrocketing. Am I really supposed to believe that this is mainly due to people holding private get-togethers? The majority of people, including myself, are fed up with everything. We’ve followed the rules in place regarding mask-wearing and social distancing. We’ve cancelled all of our vacation plans this year. We can’t attend sporting events or concerts. There aren’t even any new worthwhile movies to attend. As the calendar is soon to roll to 2021, there is no relief on the horizon. We’re sick of this. We’re burnt out. When life for eight months (and counting) consists of going to work and virtually nothing else to look forward to, it’s hard to have patience.

I'm not saying this to be snarky, but these are truly first world problems. I get that its exhausting, we are all exhausted, BUT NOW we can finally see the finish line. Its over there just on the horizon, but we need to make it there. There are 100 hurdles in a row we have to jump just before reaching the finish line, but we are SO SO close.
