The pneumonia vaccine is usually only recommended for people over 65 or people who have certain health conditions. Sadly in the US most people would qualify for it.
I was asked if I wanted it just after giving birth to my youngest...while I was still in the hospital.

Probably the misperception there is that the flu vaccine can give you a reaction that makes you feel mildly ill for a day or two. The nasal flumist vaccine they formerly gave was infamous for this.

The key point often missed is that the reaction you get from the vaccine is not infectious to other people who may be more vulnerable to the actual illness, and it is nowhere near as severe or dangerous as actual influenza.

There were a few years where we were offering it to everyone. Now they have to meet certain criteria. I’m sure anyone that wanted one could probably get one from their doctor. It may vary among hospital systems. I’ve also switched jobs. I can’t keep up up with it all. Things are constantly changing.

Yeah, the whole "getting flu from the flu shot" is people not knowing what an actual flu is and think the ramping up of their immune system from the shot, which causes mild flu-like symptoms, is the flu. A lot of the pain from illnesses is self-inflicted immune system reactions. And they're not nearly as bad as emptying the whole gastrointestinal system from both ends, which is usually the case from a flu (along with pneumonia and sometimes death).

The other issue is that as hundreds of thousands of people get the flu vaccine each year, there's bound to be some people who catch the virus shortly before the shot and then blame the vaccine when there is a true flu illness that comes right after the shot.

K, I looked it up, and indeed the FDA can go the emergency use route.

Tho... they'd have to convince the drug company to hand it over first, and who knows what will happen if they refuse to because they don't want to damage their reputation or cause unforeseen harm.

And...

As I always say...the only way to get the actual flu from getting a flu shot is if the person giving you the shot has it and passes it on to you. ;)

Good for them. There’s also potentially billions of dollars at stake long term for the companies. The last thing you want is to achieve the near impossible and create a successful vaccine to a novel virus in record time only to have nobody want to take it over some political BS. As long as it passes the safety protocols setup and is reviewed by the independent board I think it’s pretty safe from political interference anyway but this is an added layer of protection. I don’t understand why there’s even a thought that a vaccine coming out before the election will matter one bit. This is the most polarized political environment I’ve ever seen. Is anyone under the illusion that any of the people on either side will change their minds and vote for the other guy? That’s pretty delusional.

A lot of people get the flu shot and still get the flu. I think that's probably what they are referring to.

That's pretty much me, I avoid contact with other people as much as possible. Getting the vaccine myself won't change my behavior much. I won't feel comfortable until I see sustained reduction in the numbers.
Not to worry. Enough people will get the vaccine that I'm confident you'll see that reduction in numbers.
