ehh. Daily deaths in Texas really haven’t gone up since the surge. And the death rate continues to drop. This could always change as there is still a chance deaths are lagging, but Texas has always done well regarding the death rate. At least compared to other states.
But hospitalizations and cases still aren’t getting any better yet.
Younger patients could be a factor. We’re getting a better handle on how to treat it. It’s been a learning process.

I’ve been saying this for months now. It’s not black and white. Just like keeping stay at home orders indefinitely is impractical and unnecessary its also not going to work to just open everything without restrictions and pretend the virus doesn’t exist. The answer lies in the grey area in the middle.

I do think some state and local governments have tried the middle ground approach but it’s difficult to get people to buy in. For example when CA opened bars and restaurants they set reasonable restrictions but in the month or so they were open they found a less than 50% compliance rate when businesses were inspected. So not only were people not necessarily willing to follow rules but the establishments themselves looked the other way. We all need to do better. People need to accept that having the mall or a theme park or a gym open with a requirement to wear a mask is better than having it closed. Same with dining and even bars. It’s not going to be like it was pre-COVID but something is better than fully closed. The problem is people think there’s a 3rd option which is open with no restrictions. Not possible right now.
I agree with all of this. It’s the selective outrage and the non essential vs essential argument that sets my hair on fire. I believe every business is essential. If I can wear a mask and social distance at Costco I can just as easily do it at the gym, WDW, movie theatre or wherever else I choose to spend my money.

Absolutely!! I am a germ avoiding ninja at Disney and it has worked for years. I can't recommend it enough. I have avoided getting sick from Disney for all 5 trips. We've gone at different times of the year. This was just with sanitizer and some common sense. Masks and distancing (I hate that word!! lol) would only add stronger layers of protection. Do it people!

Please stop that. Reasonable, nuanced opinions aren’t allowed in the Covid thread.
Joking, of course, everyone.

#THEMOM had such a better word for social distancing and I can’t think of it. Was probably posted about 25,000 posts ago. I also dislike that term. I’m to lazy to go back and start searching. Anyone remember it?
Besides, going back that far and seeing the predictions of Disney opening by April 1 will make me cringe.

I agree, there‘s a way to do mostly anything. Even bars can be done, but they are a lot harder to do and attempt to make the experience similar to pre-COVID. I don’t think anyone has an acceptable plan for dance floors and packed spaces. We just have to wait for that kind of stuff to come back.

Physical distancing. Some outlets do use that one.

Here’s my understanding.
  • Physical distancing is the 6 foot rule. Basically staying 6 feet from the nearest stranger.
  • Social distancing includes physical distancing as well as other measures including limits on size of group gatherings and masks when physical distancing isn’t practical

The term The Mom used was physical distancing. I was answering the question.

Still has a better ring to it.

I hear ya. We just had the conversation the other day about how bad this would have sucked if we were in college. Losing half a semester, a whole summer of working some BS job and partying a lot and facing the potential of a future shut down when school gets back in the fall. I guess maybe my grades might have been better, but overall would have sucked pretty bad. At least I have hardly any life anymore now anyway. Not traveling is killing me though. I can’t remember the last time I went a full year without a vacation and my last real trip was last August.

Did anyone see that cast members are blocked out through September? Or did I miss that somewhere. That’s a shame for those hard workers.

"Six weeks after reopening most businesses, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez began closing some again and announced a 10 p.m. curfew starting Friday as county’s COVID spread worsens and hospitalization rates hit new records.

"Gimenez announced Thursday evening a reversal of his most recent reopenings, and said casinos, strip clubs, movie theaters and other entertainment venues allowed to open through a June 4 order. The newest emergency order also effectively closes most businesses at 10 p.m., when the countywide curfew takes effect for all but essential workers."

"He said his order will also tighten mask rules at restaurants, requiring customers to wear facial coverings at all times unless eating or drinking. Prior rules allowed customers to remove them when they sat down."

Words I never want to hear again after this:
Distancing (social or physical)
Unprecedented
Shelter in place
