COP updates continue

While we're on the subject of the COP, when the schedule says Open Seasonally, how do we know what days it is open? We're going the week of November 12 - 19 and want to visit this attraction, but how will we know what day(s) it will be open? Thanks!

What I'm even more angry about right now is that at the Intercot.com boards, some guy named Captain Cortex is reporting that the CoP is leaving for good, but I don't believe him!

I wonder if his so-called "inside sources" which he says he unfortunately can't reveal are Jim Hill Media, the Orlando Sentinel, etc.

I think that Captain Cortex is really General Grizz in disguise, trying to find another forum in which to show off his Chicken Little-like ways after quitting the WDWMagic forums.

I personally dont think that COP is ready to leave. Unless Disney has some grand scheme in the works. So i would not really worry.

Thread Drift Warning:

What happened with Grizz? Did he have some blowup with WDWMAGIC?

He quit this board.

Also, Cortex's latest post on the topic at the board was a slam at me.

Therefore, this gives me another reason to believe that Captain Cortex at Intercot.com is General Grizz in disguise--the way that he responded to me and what I say and think is similar to how Grizz would slam and flame ANYBODY who disagreed with him or didn't believe him.

Well at least he dropped himself from General to Captain.

(Is there a thread around on the circumstances of his departure?)

It's been running on a daily basis for over a year now, if i recall correctly. Essentially ever since Alien Encounter closed so they could install Stitch's Great Escape.

I would expect it to remain open until they decide a final plan - either major refurb or demolition. Either way, we'd know about it. Right now chances are good it will be open for your trip. At the MK, major work is being done elsewhere (mostly Mainstreet USA) and there are other projects at other parks keeping anyone who could/would/might do anything to CoP besides the rolling rehab busy.

In short: The building something new crew is at AK with Everest. The retrofit crew is at Living Seas. The tear-it-down and re-do crew is at Ice Station Cool and Mainstreet Train Station.

From the Grizz archive:
Carousel of Progress premiered at the New York World's Fair in 1964. The Sherman Brothers wrote "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" as a tribute to Walt. He loved it. The theme music played in his last filmed television special, which described Epcot and announced the Florida Project.

The attraction moved to Disneyland in 1967 and the theme song stuck. The show then was moved to Walt Disney World in 1975, when "The Best Time of Your Life" was written to change the show's image (song also by the Sherman Brothers).

In 1993, the Carousel of Progress reopened after a major refurbishment, and the original theme song was brought back -- the attraction was renamed "Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress," and thus the original song was more appropriate for this more historical or dedicated presentation.

23 years of GBBT (NOT counting Horizons, where the theme song was played in the "Easy Living" scene starting in 1983)... 18 years of Now is the Time.

I was at City Hall on Saturday to file a "friendly complaint" about the HORRIBLE condition Splash Mountain is in (which I'll probably start a thread about shortly), and I asked if guests' imput was really taken into consideration. Her exact reply was "Absolutly. COP's daily operation is a direct result of guest input."

So... Who knows if she knew what she was actually talking about... But it was at least encouraging to hear.

And as a side note, I too experienced the audio problems both times I saw it last week. The audio was especially a problem for the "off stage" characters.

Wow.... have we actually had a C.O.P. thread go about without someone bringing up the false, "Walt never wanted to replace the C.O.P." rumor...? I am astonished... I mean, I expected the same blah-blah-blah Save C.O.P., Blah-Blah-Blah Classic Attraction, Blah-Blah-Blah Just needs some TLC... But someone always brings up that rumor, which just makes my blood boil.

Well, now, it HAS been brought up ... by you!! :animwink:

Which is why your post sounds a little like baiting. If it makes your blood boil, let it go and read another thread. But at least I wouldn't bring it up just to be bringing it up. If if bothers you, I suggest let sleeping dogs lie.

Many people's opinions exist here, and I really like hearing both sides, at least while it stays constructive (or at least lighthearted ribbing).

Paul

P.S.: Walt told me all of this, just before he was placed in the cryogenic chamber.... :lookaroun :animwink:

That is an example of the non-constructive, unnecessarily hurtful statement that serves no useful purpose. People who have that opinion already think so.

I happen to agree with most of the pro-COP sentiment, but I am NOT out the door... and I am anything but BS. I understand the issues that make COP a "problem" (automatically dated; yet understanding COP itself helps explain why EPCOT and WDW exist in the first place, ... etc....).

I enjoy hearing from both sides, and even having a lot of fun at each other's (benign) expense, but come on. The people who are against COP (and Griz for that matter) can seem just as much like a broken record as they complain that he sounded....

I find it unfortunate that the tone around here gets to the point sometimes that people feel, as they have in other posts above, that if they say something traditional, etc., they will be called BS and feel like they have to put something like, "now ducks as he awaits bricks thrown at him" at the end of their posts. Even these backhanded bricks.

It is much better when the debate is about the subject and not the people. (Even if it has been debated before.... new people join every day. The whole "do a search" comment drives me nuts, unless it is written in a helpful context. Too many times, I think we drive away people with derisive remarks that make them feel small if they don't know the rules or know as much about Disney as some of the regular posters.) We learn more when we bring in all sides, and treat each other with respect.

Speck, I like to read your comments, even when I disagree. They make me think. But please refrain from being so bullish and painting with such a broad brush.

Paul
