The D-Troops just have a really hard time of realizing that Disney is NOT ABOUT NOSTALGIA!!! Disney runs deeper than that.
Disney is most certainly about nostalgia. To see that, all you need to do is notice how often their advertising relies on it, especially for aniversaries and re-releases. How many times is the 1937 movie
Snow White advertised as "the one that started it all"? And how about the whole theme of 100 Years of Magic? Or the "Remember the Magic" theme for the 25th (you know, the one with the Pepto-Bismol castle)?
Of course, as I have said before, the MK itself (like DL) is designed with a balance between the nastalgic (Main Street USA and Frontierland) and the fastastic or futuristic (Fantasyland and Tomorrowland).
The thing is, as you said, Disney IS deeper than nostalgia. It is also broader. But that is not the same thing as saying that nostalgia isn't a critical PART of the company and its popularity.
This is all that I have ever heard the troopers/"progressives"/traditionalists/grizzlybears say. They never said (at least Griz and the others I recognize) that new things or improvements could not be made -- Griz especially looked for that (like with Wishes and PhilHarmagic, both of which he liked and said so). They only pointed out the value of some things from the past.
And I agree with them here. The nostalgic IS important, and has been even since the beginning. And it remains so today. Parents want to experience new things with their children, but they also cherish balancing that with sharing things with them that they experienced with their parents. Don't tell me that that is not a major influence in return visits to DL, and now MK.
The thing is, Disney has to keep that
delicate balance. Which things to keep, and/or how to "update" them is wonderful and healthy debate;
but the value of nostalgia in general to the Disney organization is clearly vast and deep itself .
I love to see the debate here, where so many people know so much; but I cannot understand why both sides have to get hurtful so often. Disneyphilip, all Gregory did in his most recent post was to quote you in a way that showed why he disagreed with you. Nothing to report, as far as I can see there; but I do think that hurtful personal language from either side should be reported -- or better yet not said. Just discuss facts and opinions.
My two cents again, which probably means I have given about six cents by now... but anyhow.... :lookaroun
