COP updates continue

I have always enjoyed COP, even as a little kid. And I look forward to going on every time I go to MK. Hopefully it will stay there forever as it would be a shame to see it replaced.

I really think Disney should take and expand the ride so it covers the entire 20th century in increments of 20 years.

As in 1900, 1920, 1940, 1960, 1980, 2000. And I would like to see accurate versions of 1960, 1980, and 2000.

Of course the attraction would need to be moved to another park to do so. I say Epcot is the perfect park for CoP.

Not just history, but looking back on a simpler time.
Actually, the entire attraction is a commercial for General Electric. It was specifically designed to "sell" all electric living (GE style) to the households of the 1960's. It's entertaining, but it's not at all historically accurate. For example, in act 3 which represents the 1940's, they show a GE dishwasher. While top loading dishwashers made by GE did exist in the 1940's, only very rich people could afford them. Automatic dishwashers in the home were very rare. In the 1940's most people washed their dishes in the sink.

Each scene in CoP is a GE fantasy. "Progress is our most important product."

D-Troops.com is now saying that C.o.P. is in imminent danger of closing:
...on the outside, we’re seeing some pretty nice modifications to the Carousel theater. If you’ve been by the ole “CoP” recently, you’d know how every other theater is closed off for refurbishment. Scaffolding is set up where the actual seats and roof tiles are being replaced. A very welcome refreshment to the Carousel after these past 12 years without updates.

But on the inside, there are BIG plans to change Walt Disney’s Carousel. You see, the plans to remove this 40+ year-old show are now on the fast-track within WDI...

And as for “PROGRESS...” “Jim Hill Media” holds that the Carousel of Progress will be replaced with a Flying Saucers “bumper-car” ride – starring Toy Story characters. What seems to be an off-the-shelf ride that would replace a clearly unique presentation. Even the Orlando Sentinel just recently passed on rumors of the CoP’s demise.

niether Jim Hill or the Sentinel are good sources

and...so what if it is replaced......

D-Troops, in my opinion is not a good source. It stands to reason that if they are rehabbing it (which means $$$$ is being spent), that it will be open for at least a few more years. It also doesn't seem to be going seasonal either because they would close it down to rehab it instead of leaving it open.

I hate the idea of COP maybe not being there my next trip, but if nothing else it would be nice if they built a tribute for it at innoventions.

As far as moving it, I don't like this idea either. Although it would be surrounded by simular attractions at Epcot, I enjoy the contrast it provides in tomorrowland. I think it's the same reason I enjoyed 20 k in fantasyland.

Repitition makes everything seem the same, but contrasting themes helps to compliment and provides a more rounded experience for the area.

In other words, if tomorrow land becomes all about cartoon characters like it's becoming, I'll scream. However tron and his light cycles would be welcome in my book.

Hence my preface of FYI.

I did find it interesting though that Dtroops would not reveal any source.

when you have no source...the source is easy to conceal

The article itself makes no sense. They make note of the current renovation of the Carousel, but then reference Jim Hill about the flying saucers. Why would they be fixing it right before they replace it?

If a refurb is in progress and the decision is made to scrap for a new project versus a refurb, the budget will be pulled and the refurb stopped - this has happened before.

They may toil with the idea of scrapping CoP but nothing is set in stone yet.

I saw COP last week and when we first were being seated in the theatre there was an audio soundtrack playing and it was skipping so bad that you couldn't even understand it. The CM working there look embarrassed about how awful it sounded, and I was embarrassed for Disney too. I hope that was just a glitch and its not that bad every day! The rest of the show seemed to be running ok though.

Speaking of animatronic shows, I think Country Bears is in horrible condition. The eyes of some of the animatronics don't seem to be working well and the whole theatre smells like cat urine.

I love both attractions - COP and Country Bears, but if Disney has decided to do away with them I wish they would just get it over with instead of letting them get worse and worse over time. Either fix them up nice or put them to sleep, don't make them suffer publicly, its embarrassing.

Carousel of Progress is one of my favorite attractions at Disney. It would be horrible if we lose it. I am very glad that this refurbishment is being done. It bodes well for the fate of the ride, as well as the fact that they kept it open while doing so. I fear Timekeeper is suffering a horrible fate, though.

At least I think most of us can agree that it would be better to die than go the way of the Enchanted Tiki Room. There are things worse than death.

Try visiting Disneyland. They maintain their animatronics wonderfully, and the facilities they inhabit. I was horrified at the condition of WDW's Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion the last time I was out there a few years ago. The horrible condition of the Haunted Mansion, and the way it was being operated by the CM's, actually made me very sad. I don't remember the Country Bear Jamboree smelling of cat urine on my last WDW visit, but from my personal experience and the other reports of declining upkeep at WDW, I don't doubt that's now a problem.

Disneyland even has the original Tiki Room in beautifully pristine condition, without the "Under New Management" garbage that's like going to a bad wedding reception in 1994.
