Contemporary Going Corporate?

My brother who is an Exec. VP from a large US company stayed in the Contemporary last December for a corporate meeting. He was on the Club Concierge level. He was told by "the Manager" of the resort that Chef Mickey was going to move to another location and the the Contemporary would become a business/corporate client resort exclusively in 2009 (i.e. Only companies could reserve rooms as part of conventions or large meetings). Could this even remotely be true?

Considering that they are building a DVC tower next door...I highly doubt it.

It's always been a preferred corperate location. But it won't be made exclusive.

I would find that very difficult to believe. I don't see what the benefit would be. They are not having difficulty booking rooms currently. They are already an extremely popular convention destination, as well as extremely popular with the non convention visitors. It just does not add up to me.

Not a snowball's chance in Florida. They wouldn't have moved the arcade and counter-service, and built that giant tacky Fantasia gift shop, to the Grand Canyon Concourse if that were the case.

That and they are expanding Chef Mickey's, not relocating it.

I know that rumor has been going around, but I'm pretty sure that there is no expansion for Chef Mickey's happening, that all the space of the former Concourse Steakhouse is going be the new counter-service area

The Contemporary went corporate a long time ago, as soon as they added the convention center it was ruined. I can't think of anything worse than me in my bathing suit standing next to some stiff in a suit. Doesn't sound like a ideal vacation experience to me. I wish Disney would make up its mind with regards to this resort. It can't be both, it just doesn't work. If it weren't for the location, this hotel would be one of the worst on property. At least the DVC part will really be like its own resort, so I guess that won't be so bad. RIP Contemporary of 70's and 80's.

I agree with others -- no way it's going to be exclusive. Chef Mickey's isn't going anywhere, instead it is growing.

As for the poster who doesn't like the mix of conference center and bathing suits, I find Contemporary separates those about as well as anybody. Try the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu, any Vegas strip resort with an nice pool area (including the ritziest of all, the Bellagio), and you'll find the same odd mix in sight from time to time. All the hotels try to minimize it by separate the areas, and Disney does that as well. Beyond that, I think they count on the fact that conventioners will enjoy the resort amenties in the off-hours, and vacationers will be in a good mood and therefore will, in most cases, either not mind seeing people in business attire, or will in fact chuckle a bit at the unfortunate people working while the vacationers are relaxing.

I hope not. Staying at the Contemporary has always been my husband's dream.

I doubt it. The Contemporary has always catered to corporate clientelle, and corporate conventions, meetings, political fundraisers etc. I'm sure they are only enhancing those clients now, especially with the bad economy. Business entities still need to have shareholder meetings, regional meetings, retreats, conventions etc. even in bad economic times. Many Presidents and candidates have held fundraisers, campaign functions etc there over the years. Also, when we stayed on the Concierge Level about 2 years ago, different members of the staff commented on different foreign dignitaries and celebrities taking a whole block of rooms on the concierge level for business and vacation purposes.

What he may have done was misunderstood what he was told. The existing A-Frame Contemporary and remaining wing will be only available for the booking of rooms for conventions and corporate events, once the DVC Tower we are currently working on is finished.

Are you saying that non-convention, non-corporate guests won't be able to book a room in the A-Frame? or south wing?

I doubt it. If the Contemporary was the only convention space on property than I might could see it. With the number of convention space available at other resorts, I would think Disney would not be able to fill all the rooms. I don't know this for sure, but that's my 2 cents worth.

I can't see it happening. If Disney wanted an 'All Corporate' hotel then they would probably build one to the right spec rather than use one which so many people love (although the contemporary would probably be the right spec already but still can't see it happening).

Maybe they might be converting a couple of floors?

Everyone keeps saying the DVC tower however it isn't official. I spoke to a DVC rep about buying and asked about this and she said they have no info on it. i asked when they may be selling it and she again said they have not been told a thing. She said she goes on sites like this one for and that how she hears about it. So can we be sure the CM wasn't just talking about what we assume is the DVC tower instead of a corporate only. Or devils advacite maybe the new section is really for corporate only? Just a conversation starter.

never going to happen. yes, they have large ball rooms and bus. center, and also alot of bus. people stay there for this purpose, however i doubt disney would do this to a current hotel. if they would do this, they would probly make a new resort for corperations and bus. people to stay

This is so true. Last year when I stayed in the Contemporary, there was a conference for Dentist's. Honestly, there were not too many families, which was nice for pool reasons and other amenities around the hotel. However, watching suits walking back and forth kinda took the "I'm on vacation and don't want to see a suit for a week" out of the trip. In fact, over the past five years of staying there, I have noticed how many more professional conference types who stay there versus families. Its kinda sad, since it is a prime location for any family, being so close to the MK and all. Also, getting a room if you are a non-conference attendee is quite difficult, and unfair for a family who actually wants to visit the parks and enjoy WDW for what it is!

Honestly, due to this fact, combined with the fact that their rooms are not functional for families, we are not staying there again...after 25 years of having it as our hotel of choice.
