Conduct on these Boards

I agree there is always room for a discussion of differing opinions but sometimes things get a little over-zealous. One area of concern I have observed in the recent months is an increase in use of foul language within posts; when we do have young people that frequent the boards. Yes, they have probably heard the words before, but I think that points of view can be expressed without resorting to 4-letter terms. Even if you put symbols in for letters, it is usually plain what someone is saying. Just my thoughts ....

You can report that too.

No it wont.

(is this the right room for an argument?)
Yeah, typical. Turn a perfectly normal thread by a concerend citizen into an argument. But hey, it's the kind of behaviour we've come to expect from you and your kind.

It's because of morans like you that this forum is going down the drian and also youre need to mind your'e spelling to it looks patethic there are kids here!

Edit: when will I learn? Satire and the internets don't mix! Therefore, disclaimer: the above is a meant for entertainment purposes only!

I COMPLETELY agree. I have seen so many posts that are just so hateful.

We all have one major thing in common. We love Disney. You'd think that being people who love the Most Magical Place on Earth and the Happiest Place on Earth would treat others with respect and kindness.
I'm afraid that's a bit naive. Just because we all love areas of Disney to one degree or another doesn't mean we aren't a cross section of real world society either.

But maybe that's what also makes it more... Interesting?

Realistically, if people were not passionate about WDW, this forum woudn't exist. However, with passion comes intensity. I get the feeling that people almost think of loving WDW as a part of who they are, and that if you "insult" it, it's a personal attack. I still feel that after being a member on this site for 6 years that some people cannot seperate a critcism of WDW with a critcism of them, personally, for liking the place. It's a misunderstanding that's resulted in sloppy political type labels and arguments (D&G, Pixie Dusters, you know the rest.) and more heated debates as the OP pointed out.

I also feel recently there's been a much larger push back from the "non-complainers" (who in the past seemed more than content to ignore opposing opinions because they knew, for them, WDW was still great) in the form of personal attacks and weekly "stop complaining!" threads, which does nothing but add to the negativity of these boards and proves that two wrongs don't make a right. Regardless of what "side" you take (and WDW discussions and opinions are not as black and white as some would like to think), poor conduct and grade-school quality insults won't get you anywhere. And most people can tell you're running out of ideas and counter-points when you get to that point.

But really, it's not my job to moderate these boards. There are people who have proven themselves more than capable of doing just that and I have faith in their abilty to continue to do so in the future with regards to handling debates without forcing everyone to comply to the same view point. Having multiple opinions is what makes this board interesting anyway.

Some posters just can't handle the opinions of others. Since this stuff means a lot to people (or they wouldn't be on these boards), they will become emotional when quality slips, things break down and aren't fixed, classic things are tampered with or demolished, new attractions are lacking etc. A lot of people are just disenchanted with the company in general. When you mix that with people who are generally fine with the direction the company has gone in, you get people not only being defensive of it, but actually offensive towards other users. Take all these different opinions, attitudes and personalities and mix well.

I have been on the the internet since 1994 and participated in a lot of message boards and have seen the nastiness that is out there, but I have also seen a lot of great boards where that nastiness stayed under control. To often people resort to personal attacks on other people when they don't agree with them which IMHO does nothing to enhance these board. I know I probably won't change anything, but that won't stop me from trying.
Not all rude/nasty posts are created equal. If someone wants to go nuclear over FLE, splash mountain, or Starbucks, take a minute while you are reading their "meltdown". Is this truly an adult who's life is over because of changes to the main street bakery? Or is your going crazy in reaction to them going crazy actually accomplishing what they wanted. In other words, don't feed the troll and he will leave us all alone.

Take this for what it's worth. I'm not holding this to be true, just my observations.

I've mainly noticed that a lot of the fights on the board spring from what almost appear to be WDWmagic's two "political parties": The TDO "lovers" and the TDO "haters," (as how each tend to think of the other) or the two opposing sides that will not cease to assume the other is extreme in their either love or hatred to the point of fallacy. The TDO lovers will praise a new addition, the TDO haters will deconstruct and criticize it, TDO lovers will accuse TDO haters of being heartless and condescending, TDO haters will accuse TDO lovers of being ignorant and tasteless. And so on. Guilty as charged.

But I think what people are missing here is that these groups are not necessarily TDO lovers or haters, but everyone is a WDW lover, the difference being this:
-One side is frustrated with the management style
-One side would rather spend time complaining about the management.

But here's the thing: Neither side is going away. They both have their valid reasons to sway one way or the other. So...Let people enjoy whatever it is they want to enjoy, and don't question their taste of their knowledge about the management. And let those who care to critically discuss the management do so. It's not fair to drag one side into the other and expect them to suddenly play by the other side's rules. That's where the argument starts going in circles.

And it all comes down to one problem: Attacking opinions instead of discussing them. Because we seem to be at a point where the other side is wrong not for any particular reason. They're just wrong because they are. And then when the argument tires out, it starts into passive-aggressive, lamenting asides.

Am I guilty of this? Heck yes I am. I think a lot of us on both sides are.

And yet some on this forum ARE honestly productive in their discussion at all times, also on both sides, and I to them I owe much gratitude. :)

You should have been around during The Wand wars......

The Wand Wars.....was that set in between Star Wars Episodes Two and Three in the Expanded Universe?

Also, when it comes to fighting...I will refer you all to my "Grumpy State Debate Team" T Shirt....

it says, "I'm right, you're wrong, end of debate"

Is that so hard to follow? Cant we all just get along? Have a magical day!!!

We could but then it would be a pretty boring discussion board. One person would present their opinion and everyone else would just say, "Man, that's exactly the way I feel"! Yawn! :) See ya next thread!
