Conduct on these Boards

I have been on these boards for a few years now and there have always been the occasional angry exchange on certain threads, but it seems to be happening more and more recently. I am seeing more and more threads where people are resorting to personal attacks against other members.

I really enjoy these boards, there is a great mix of people here with different backgrounds and different points of view. Even when I don't agree with someone I try to be respectful of them, I try to disagree without making it personal. I will admit that I don't always succeed in this and will confess to having said things I probably shouldn't have, but I am trying hard to be more careful what I say.

I encourage everyone to try to be respectful of others on the boards. We can all have interesting and even passionate debates about these topics without have to resort to personal attacks. It isn't even necessary to attack people who have obviously come here to troll, they do it to get a rise out of people and if we don't take the bait they will likely go away.

So let's all resolve to try to bring the level of anger here down a couple notches.

Thanks for reading!

I COMPLETELY agree. I have seen so many posts that are just so hateful.

We all have one major thing in common. We love Disney. You'd think that being people who love the Most Magical Place on Earth and the Happiest Place on Earth would treat others with respect and kindness.

I just joined the forum not too long ago and my first impression after joining was that people on here have not had their happy meals yet. I mean my gosh the (Disney VS Universal) argument in a good majority of the threads gets heated for no reason. I'm one of those people that's been disappointed with recent WDW growth and other things, but I will never disrespect another's opinion of the place. I'll never outright shoot someones point of view or opinion down because they are different or simply put, they just don't know some things.

I enjoy learning and talking to people about their experiences, expectations, and testimonials. I know there are some good, kind hearted, well spoken respectful people on this board. The few I've met i my two week existence here have been awesome. Most of you share some intriguing ideas and feelings about the place. It's different for me because I live here. I can go to Disney whenever I choose to, as well as Universal, Sea World, Legoland, Busch Gardens. I love being able to tell people what their building, or how "A Day way" during a certain season and vice versa. Love the interaction with the folks on here. I think overall this is an awesome forum and I hope some people tone it down!

Some people just can't take it when they are proven wrong or are told something they didn't/don't want to hear. If your comments get to the point of attacking someone's education, you've lost any credibility you had up to that point. I've been in many a topics where it's gotten to this.

Everyone who has stepped foot onto Disney property will have a different experience. Opinions are like (you know what) and everyone has one. What I see and feel is not going to be the same for the person next to me. There are small picky things and big overall things that we discuss.

Also, the internet is a fickle thing. In forums such as this, there is nothing to give inflection to the words you read. You read them how you percieve them. So if a topic is not in your favor, you'll see comments as people fighting against you and it can be very easy to misinterpret what is being said by another and blow a topic severely off course.

Finally, however, people are going to act how they are going to act, whether it be actions, words, etc. When I read arguments in threads, and I picture these people in the parks. Just as an example, and be it only an example, a person comes into a forum, complains about how their vacation was ruined because they were next in line to meet a character and the character had to leave for the parade. They went and complained to guest services and were told that there was nothing that could be done due to the characters schedule. This type of thread is a set up for any and all kinds of disaster and mayhem. There will be empathetic people, but then there will be people who will just be like, well, you should've gotten there earlier.

While I do agree that things should tone down, I don't see it happening. There are too many directions and ideas in motion at Disney that have people on the defensive.

You know....IDK if I just don't read it or involve myself in it, or because I have been on forums where it's MUCH crazier than this one, but I don't see a lot of harshness. More posts are polite and friendly, then they are dramatic or rude :)

Mousehockey, you are actually the first and I think only person on this board who's ever been rude or mean to me, so I had to giggle just a bit at your reply...lol ;)

See.. it's stuff like this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ that causes problems. Thanks Britt for giving everyone a prime example!

Ahh the regular I want to be a moderator thread. Surely Disney have the Moms area on the official site for those that need everything to be sweetness light and pixie dust. If you think this site is prone to nastyness you must be pretty new to t'internet.

Just sayin like

I have been on the the internet since 1994 and participated in a lot of message boards and have seen the nastiness that is out there, but I have also seen a lot of great boards where that nastiness stayed under control. To often people resort to personal attacks on other people when they don't agree with them which IMHO does nothing to enhance these board. I know I probably won't change anything, but that won't stop me from trying.

A lot of times you can just tell which threads are going to blow up into a whole lot of nastiness. I usually avoid them. Sometimes I just pop some popcorn, sit back and enjoy the fireworks. As a rule of thumb if the title mentions comparing WDW to Universal/Potter or anything related to poor Disney maintenance (and now Starbucks) you are almost guaranteed to see conflict. Also there are certain posters who always get attacked whenever they post things. I don't fully understand all of the conflicts that occur around here. There are some long lasting personal conflicts that started before my time here. For me, I am not going resort to personal attacks against anyone since I don't actually know anyone here in the real world.

Disney brings many peeps emotion to a high level!! I think that is when we see exchanges that become attacks. When most people's emotions go up, their IQ generally goes down!! Thus followed by the harsh responses/exchanges.

At the beginning of this thread it was mentioned "it seems to be happening more and more recently". Man has it! Especially over the Thanksgiving weekend!!

I've always enjoyed the heated exchanges on these boards, whether they are based on facts or opinion. It reminds me of my undergraduate days when we would spend a few hours after dinner on Friday nights debating anything and everything. People argued forcefully and passionately but we always managed to avoid the personal attacks. (e.g. "You're stupid for thinking that.")

There are a few people posting on these boards who can't seem to accept that other people have different opinions, who can't differentiate facts from informed opinions, who appear to almost enjoy attacking people personally when someone expresses a view different than their own.

IMHO, the moderators on these boards do an outstanding job of giving people the chance to have heated exchanges based on facts or opinions but know when to cut off the discussion when the attacks turn personal.

There are plenty of WDW websites that are sugar coated. wdwmagic is my favorite because I get to read lots of different opinions and people are allowed to express themselves freely.
