THat water was in a pool which was part of River Country but not actually part of the Lake. It was for those who wanted a more chlorinated experience...LOL

For those that don't know, there is an amoeba that lives in natural bodies of water that can cause death if they infect the brain. It is more of a concern in Florida because the water temperature is higher. The cases are extremely rare, so I think the regulations are unnecessary. I have been swimming in lakes and rivers in Florida my entire life.

You are correct. It is extremely rare and "they" think it is most likely you will get an infection when the water temps are high (above 80), but people do die from the amoeba. It has just been several years since there has been an outbreak. 3 boys (around ages 10 - 15) died in 2007.

I could see where Disney might be freaked out by the possibility of someone dying of the amoeba they caught at River Country.

Yes, I could see it being a worry. But more people have died on Mission Space during its short life than were ever killed by an amoeba at River Country during its 25 years.

I suppose its all fairly moot anyway. The new regulations forced the park to close, I don't think it was Disney's choice. I'm assuming it would have been way too expensive to try and make the swimming area into a "natural looking" pool (ala Typhoon Lagoon). Its just too bad it was left to rot. It reminds me of pictures I have seen of Splendid China, another sad story in amusement park history.

After loooking at it on Bing Maps you can see what areas shared water with bay lake. I guess my question is why couldnt they just dam it off and use chlorinated water and keep it open.

Water quality was only one of a myriad of reasons why RC closed. It was too small and poorly located. There were also issues with staffing and with 2 other successful water parks on property is was unneeded.

I'm sure Disney would like to see it torn down, too. Problem is THAT costs money. If you're Disney and you don't plan to use the land, would you rather let nature reclaim it for free or spend millions clearing it out?

Here's an idea that might work for both: Disney could charge $10 admission to the area, provide pick axes and ____________hammers, and you can keep whatever you can carry out.

That would probably work for many of the attractions. All of us fanatics out there would love to cart away the pieces! One of those flumes would be awesome in my back yard!

Wow. Now that's funny. I didn't even preview my previous post, and I just realized that you can't type "S-L-E-D-G-E-hammer".
Huh?
You Brits have some funny meaning for this word, or am I just completely out of touch with slang terms these days?

Thank you for clarifying...I was wondering what in the world you actually wrote.

I'm not British, so I don't understand the double meaning either, but funny none the less:ROFLOL:

Sad ,very sad pictures of such a fun place. We had more fun there than at any other water park. That particular year we stayed at the cabins. We would hop in the golf cart and head over. So sad to see it look so neglected. We have sweet and precious memories on video of our girls when they were little going down the slides and attempting the zip line and some chickening out. We have video of Goofy going down the slide in the pool area and holding on to his costume when he hit the water so it wouldn't come off!! Being from Texas I do understand the dangers of unchlorinated water. But even chlorinated water parks have issues with bacteria. Our water parks here have had major issues with bacteria and such and people getting sick. I sure wish that Disney would have sunk some money into making it another pool area for Wilderness resort instead of letting waste away.

I have many fond memories of that water park. We used to visit WDW frequently when I was younger and of those visits 75% of them were spent in a camper or tent in Fort Wilderness. I remember getting blisters on my feet from the loooooooong walk back and fourth from our campsite to River Country in flipflops.

It's not a British slang term. The word refers to a certain person in the history of WDWMagic that caused too much trouble. (is that succinct enough?)
