Changes to Spaceship Earth Descent.

Had you quoted or read the rest of my post, I think you would have understood it better. I supported his "defending his position" but he was talking down to people, though I think it was unintentional. It is hard to become an insider on this forum but I think he is on his way and I provided him with some tips, if you read my example, which you seemed to omit form your quote. Try again :)

Okay, I'll try again.

Oh, I read it...I just disagree that he was talking down to people. That is your opinion, not a fact, as my opinion is that he was not doing that. As for providing him 'tips'...are you serious? Your post sounded like you were an adult giving a little kid advice...perhaps well intentioned, but came across as arrogant imho. (I'd wave here, but can't find that emoticon on this new layout :))

Sooo I investigated first-hand as to what's going on with the descent...and what wdw71 said is pretty true. Things have changed in there. Whether or not it means something's coming, no idea but one can hope. My analysis....

- Some new starfield curtains have been put up in areas where it was once just dark or with very few lights
- There is indeed new light pointing to the 'rock structure' when it used to be pitch black right there/only very a small chunk visible before (Where did the rock structure come from?? I don't remember that being in the Irons version...)
- Heck of a lot more triangles, including some in some very interesting positions/places
- Some new positioning of the curtains
- Didn't see aforementioned and described 'the cage' thing

Whether this is a result of maintenance or actually something new, only time will tell.

Yeah, I watched one of Martin's videos of the Irons version after he said it had been there, but never saw anything even resembling it in the video. It definitely isn't new though, that much is obvious from looking at it.

The starfield curtains were added a couple months ago. Are we sure were seeing new traingles or just think we are? Cause sometimes I ride though and I think was that there or not, the traingles pile up in my head. If they are adding more though hopefully they will do something with them this time. So far Ive just wanted to pull them all down along with all the other mess through there. Sounds like some things are shifting here and there anyway.

Good question, I think the lighting may change from day-to-day somehow as I've ridden and though there were triangles everywhere and also where I could barely notice them.

Oh believe me, last time I fully rode SSE was about 2-3 months ago and I always manage to stare at the triangles while the 'future' is loading or sometimes just stare off into the triangles if I'm not in the mood to see the video and see if there's anything different with them. I can safely say that the new starfields that are immediately after the 'floating lights' on the right hand side were most definitely not there before. That area used to be completely pitch black with the exception of very small lights.

I remembered specifically that there were several triangles here and there above you all leading up to the 'triangle explosion' and then they were became few and inbetween after that part; now they've everywhere up above and, more importantly, they were never on the black curtains themselves and now a few are, actually FACING some of the cars as if they're like the original screens from way back when. That and the 'rock structure' were the biggest surprises.

Agreed, that music used to give me chills and was the perfect ending to the ride. It's feels as if the people who redid the ride never rode it before redoing it...
So much this. The gorgeous city of light coupled with this music, so incredible-

That is one of the most chilling and wonderful things ever at a Disney park. I was chilled and moved by it as a child, and I still am as an adult. And i'm certain I always will be. No video can do the scene true justice, though I urge everyone to check Martin's tribute of it.

The sad thing is that this particular scene didn't even need changing. It felt timeless and the effects used still look stunning to this day. Not to mention the music, which is also timeless.

I still get goosebumps every time I hear it.

the entire issue can be summed with this:

Spaceship Earth has no heart... It was ripped out in 2007.

Same here.
So subtle - and not so subtle - changes and what a difference can it make. For me, or even two of my best friends who used to visit WDW, Spaceship Earth was always a favorite, something very special. Now it's just OK. Descent is a joke. If they just refurbished the ride without changing the score, the narration, and the end, it would have been perfect. But no, someone must have thought that it would be cool to remove everything that was right with the ride.

In 2008, I wrote one big long letter complain to Disney about that. I got a detailed and polite reply, I knew nothing would change but I was happy somebody read it. I would have felt dishonest not to express my concern for such a special attraction. Let's hope for a better future indeed...

What did you say in the letter? and what did they reply? if you don't mind me asking? :)

We will have to agree to disagree. I know tone and what not is hard to read over the internet. The example (or "tip") I gave about Rum Pirate was actually true. Everyone disregarded his info and it was 100% true. Sometimes you just have to wait it out. Also, I do not know how I could have phrased it so it was more "adult" but it is the internet so I try to keep it brief. I do teach preschool kids though so it is possible, however usually my words are the same but my tone is what changes. I doubt we will change each other's opinions (which is okay with me) so I will agree to disagree.

No harm in agreeing to disagree in this instance. It's likely that we'll agree on other topics of discussion; that often happens here. :) I don't remember the particular example you cited, but it is true that credibility on here is certainly earned (and rightly so).

Btw, I teach 11th and 12th grades. Man, I couldn't do your job with all those little 'rugrats'. Give me my daily 112 16-18 year olds with 'attitude' anytime. :)

I just finished my Master's in Special Ed in grades 1-6 and I am looking forward to working with an older group of kids. But, I couldn't do your job and work with high school kids! They honestly intimidate me! Have a great summer, I look forward to more agreements/disagreements with you lol :)

It was truly beautiful. Especially the end, where you drifted away from the lights and the music faded into the sound of wind. So lets REPLACE it with "HAHAHA DER'S MAH HEAD ON UH CARTOON ROFFLE ROFFLE!!!"

I personally like the new SSE, it's descent and narration. I think that while I preferred the Jeremy Irons version back in the day, a lot of what was said went over the heads of the most common type of visitor... children. Sure things like the new "back up system" comment seem maybe corny or out of place but y'know what? My 6-year old gets that more than scholars debating etc. He also adores the new descent because he gets to be hands on and then see himself bouncing around on screen in the future. If it keeps the new generation interested and subsequently keeps the attraction from being shut down, I'll learn to love it. LOL!!

NOTE: This is coming from a woman who spends every ounce of "free" time she can working on a site dedicated to Extinct Disney attractions. Don't misunderstand... if I could go back in time and ride the Walter Cronkite or Jeremy Irons versions, I would in a heart beat. I just try to stay positive and lean on the side of not making anything else extinct and just keeping it fresh for today's minds. :)

I would have to say that for all the complaining about the dumbing down of the narration, the real problem is the lack of imagination in the descent, as others have suggested. I would be all for something that utilized the video screens in a better way, perhaps a horizons-like approach where guest locations and choices could affect the other scenes you might see in the descent.

Prior to 07, Spaceship Earth set the scene beautifully and IllumiNations really did feel like the epic conclusion.
Abosolutely!!! Bring back the original Illumiantions Show as well. The new version is great but falls short without the highlights on the World Showcase.
