Hey, guys!
Could you help me clear out a little doubt? A travel newspaper here in Brazil stated that "Spaceship Earth has stopped in time, as its journey doesn't even get to the invention of cell phones"... I find it hard to believe that Disney has missed this so important even of the history of communications, but I need some proof in order to write them a letter or email. Does anyone remember if there is any AA talking on a cell phone? In which scene? Is there any picture or video of that?
Thanks a lot!

PS: I miss these forums.... gotta go back... :)

If I remember correctly, the last scenes with AAs revolves around the invention and improvement of computers. I do not think there is mention of cell phones, which when you think about it does seem strange. Maybe they do mention it and I missed it...? I just went in January...am I losing my memory this young??

The attraction as it was when I last rode in Jan stopped at the presen and I dont rember a cell phone. There is no part about the future except the interactive video. They need to make the entire decent about the future.

There is nothing about cell phones, at least nothing I saw when I was on it a few days ago. Which really to me is fine because they talk about computers, and a cell phone (now-a-day) is a computer. Also same with GPS and such, so I think them using computers broadens and means anything and everything dealing with computers.

The attraction is no longer exclusively themed to communications. Currently it is More of a Horizons 2.0 lite.

Thats a biiiit of a stretch. But like master yoda said, they no longer focus on communications like the last incarnation did

hmmmm, cell phones in a scene. I would think that "computers" in the present scene and the video screen conversations of the past pretty much covers it. I see what you are saying, but when you are covering hundreds of years in communication, the last 10 years of cell phones (that is how long they have actually been pocket friendly and not a small backpack) is not even a blip. By the time the mod a scene, it is outdated (ie: CoP)

Now, most cell phones are computers.

Master Yoda said it best to its current theme.

Good luck though.

Telecomm is something that interestes me (seeing as I work in it)

I think there should be some mention of cell phones in SSE, but as to how, that is difficult.

There were all sorts of different systems that sprang up and there are many many routes the technology took. I can't picture a scene as simple as Woz sitting in a garage.

Yep - SSE is no longer communications specific. More how mankind has survived using technology, including communication.

The ascent is considered history, 180top is considered present day, and the descent tomorrow.

It`s very dark and touchy tomorrow isn`t it?? ;)

Well the world is supposed to end in 2012. I guess there really is no point in the mouse getting our hopes up is there?

there is just the scene with computer data flying overhead as to symbolize the transferring of data via the internet. technically this could show communication from person to person via computers.

i think that the decent should show more things. im not saying that the "look into future" doesnt give me a chuckle but its honestly not anything to write home about. i'd rather they explore today's computers/cell phones and things. but i still love the ride regardless!

I know people get down on the decent (play on words intentional...), but it is my DD7 and DD4's favourite part, so I for one hope that if they do add to the decent, they leave the interactive vid screen in it. It is probably the only reason I can get them on it 2-3 times per trip...

The screens are staying. Siemens spent too much on them to remove the concept.

There will just be more to look at.

I don't think SSE is really communications related at all ever since they changed the descent. Any semblance to communications in the present or future was contained in the 94+ version of that (if i got that year right), and in that version you could almost see a metaphor for the cellphones and the internet. The unlimited instant communication that the diorama and fiber optics represented, to me anyway, the internet and cellular communication.

This is one attraction at Epcot that really predicted the future accurately, in that respect.

Now of course, the descent has more to do with the theme of Horizons than communication, with it focusing on daily life.

Wow!!! So many replies!!! Thanks a lot!!!

Well, yeah, I don't remember any cell phones there either... I guess I was so angry at the newspaper for calling the park "Epcot Center" that I just wanted some way to prove them wrong!
I guess I am writing to them anyway, I don't think the attraction is outdated just because they don't show a cell phone.

I agree that there is a lack of emphasis on modern communication, but than again, do we really need it? Everyone on the ride can see their piece of "todays" communications technology by simply looking at the cell phone in their pocket!:D

I did find it a bit odd that they focused on computers twice. First with the "IBM by way of Studio 54" scene, and then the trip through the Woz's garage.

So I guess I can see where the paper said that SSE stopped in the 1970s. Especially since previous incarnations always had a modern day/near future scene plus the planetarium.

I'm guessing the decision was monetary, since the current version requires almost no updating. All the scenes are in the past, and the "future" is just software and a touch screen.
