Cell Phone Coverage?

I've seen a lot of people suggesting the use of radios/walkie-talkies to communicate and find other members of our party in the park. How is the cell phone coverage in the parks? Is there a reason not to use cell phones for this?

Coverage is fine, some folks prefer the 'ease' of walkie-talkies.

The newer walkie-talkies use cell towers as relays anyway.

For the most part cell phones work. There are some areas in the parks where you cannot get a signal so people prefer the walkie talkies if they have kids that might be off on their own, just in case you are in an area where your cell phone does not work.

Some folks (like us!) don't have unlimited minutes so those cell phone calls cost money.

The walkie talkies have their downside too, as you will frequently find a lot of "strangers" using the same frequency on their walkie talkies. It can get confusing and annoying.

I have verizon with great coverage. Some of the more complex and larger buildings you might lose service but not many. Also I stay at POR and depending on the direction your room faces you might need to leave your phone cliped to the miniblinds to get service. When it rings just step out on the balcony.

Cell coverage is fine in the all the parks. Obviously, you'll lose a signal in some places (elevators, etc.).

Main reasons to use walkies are 1) your cell phone plan makes extra minutes epensive, or 2) you are from Europe/Asia, etc. and therefore would be sky-high international rates to call across the park.

Forget the walkie talkies, there is so much traffic and you get wise guys who cut in and cause troubles. Stick to the cell phones. There is coverage all over except for inside some of the attractions (and your cell should be off or on vibrate then anyway). We've traveled with coverage from AT&T and now with Sprint and have never had a problem. Program Disney Dining into your phone in case you want to make or cancel and ADR, its the best thing we ever did.

Last year I had Sprint/Nextel and we were able to communicate just fine. This year I have T-Mobile so i'll let ya know after my trip in August, but I get coverage everywhere around where I live.:)

I think some form of communication is good for everyone to have in the event that groups get split.

Ive got every Disney World number that I could ever need and then some in my phone.
Another thing to do is send yourself a text message with your ADR confirm numbers and times on it. That way you wont forget the time and if theres a problem you have the confirm number.

Yea, cell phones are the way to go. I gave directions as to our location to who I thought was my brother in law.

Him: Hey, where are you?
Me: Standing at the entrance to Splash Mtn.
Him: we are own our way.

Minutes later,

Him:We don't see you.
Me, looking around for them: We are right here, where you go in.
Him: Still don't see you.
Me, Notice a man in a garden type hat looking for someone in all directions. : Is this Tim?
Him:No
Me: grab the kids and get into line as fast as I can.:ROFLOL:

Never used them again!

Unless a vocal discussion is required, I much prefer to use text messages while in the World when the group has split up. They get through in low-signal areas where a call may not (or may get dropped as soon as they answer). And if the other person happens to be in an attraction where there's no service, the message will go through to them when they leave the building.
Usually messages are a simple "meet up outside Spaceship Earth at 2PM" or "not feeling well, going back to the room" kind of thing. And because I get unlimited text messages, it doesn't cost me anything extra.

Among the numbers you should program into your cell phone should be WDW Dining (407-WDW-DINE), WDW Central Reservations (407-W-DISNEY) and the WDW Main Switchboard (407-824-2222) which can connect you to ANYWHERE on property as well as give you park hours and show times.

I also have the number for the local Checker Cab (407-422-2222) because you never know when it'll come in handy.... and Magical Express (866-599-0951). All of the listing names start with WDW so that they're grouped together on my contact list.
Lastly, I make sure I have the number for whichever airline I'm flying on that trip.

We have T-Mobile and it works great at WDW. We haven't had a problem with it working in the parks, or in our resort room. :)

I have Cellular One (well, I guess it's AT&T now) and have never had a problem with phone reception at the parks, and I do a lot of texting.
