Cash-Strapped Disney

I think this is all wishful thinking that the splash mountain changes will be walked back or whatever. It's gonna happen, the ride will be less good than it was before, and there's nothing you can do about it
It could be better than it was. C’mon, it’s possible. Well, at least at DL; the Anaheim original Splash never told its Brer Rabbit story particularly well.

If I understand this thread correctly, Disney's basically doomed to bankruptcy and Iger's defining legacy *won't* be expanding the company to being the dominant force it is today, but failing to prepare for a pandemic they had no control over. And that everyone in the company should think about leaving since it will be Eisner Era 2.0.

Did I get that right?

Do you think we'd know if it was poorly received with the Disney spin machine at full speed?

They'll be doing internal polling of guests. Those won't be publicized, but Splash Mountain is a tremendous fan favorite... they'll get strong reactions both ways.

Disney widely took out a lot of loans at the start of this, they’re safe from bankruptcy for now, but there is an ocean between not bankrupt and profitable.

Bankruptcy isn't likely at this point. WDW being closed through summer would have had them forced to restructure and selling some assets. With the resort open, they have a path towards stopping the billions bleed.

This does not come as a surprise to me at all. It is sad, but certainly not shocking at all. Will Disney bounce back of course I believe they will. People have faith in Disney as a product (the parks, movies, merchandise) and they don't back away from it. Disney will bounce back, but it will take some time.

I daresay, it depends a little how much they alienate their fanbase. Like it or not, the theme parks have always been based on the idea of selling nostalgia.

But the country is now questioning American nostalgia in a big way. We don't know the future (no control), so we get mad at the past (= control).

I've been listening to Disney theme park fans for quite some time. While not all are fully into nostalgia, many alternately take comfort in the constancy of theme parks. Some fans seem to have some level of OCD; Dumbo going around and around in the same circle bring them comfort. Another faction of Disney fans have some sort of anxiety; they worry about being too hot, too wet, too scared, too hungry or they get anxious if they can't plan a detailed vacation schedule. They also draw comfort from the sameness of WDW/DL. They enjoy planning meals half a year before they are hungry, because it eases their food anxiety.

On top of that, there's a trash can every 20 feet, and a bathroom around every corner. Just in case anyone's got trash or bathroom anxiety!

If Disney can't peddle nostalgia?

Mothball CoP, completely rescript Country Bears, redo Hall of Presidents to be witty and musically inclined, remove elements of Peter Pan, etc.
It has been hard to keep up with everything right now since there is so much going on. I can’t remember at the moment if you mentioned if JC was receiving any changes or not, in regards to the headhunter scene. Is JC one of the attractions being looked at for changes as well? Just curious.

What it did tell was certainly better than “Find the Macguffin while Wacky Hijinx Ensue”. It’s like a Mario plot, but the macguffin in question is a regular household item instead of a Thousand Year Old Celestial Object.

Yes. He mentioned it in the list, that had Splash at the top. This was BEFORE the refurb announcement.
