Cash. Do I need it?

I feel like this must be somewhere on the boards, but I can't find anything.

When touring the parks, can I get away with just carrying my key to the world and no cash? I'd rather rely on the dining plan and charging to the room key if possible, but I assume that I'm not going to be able to actually do that.

Any specific examples of things in the parks that are Cash-Only?

Thanks!

The KTTW card will be good for most things in the parks - all shops and restaurants will accept it. Some of the "independent" restaurants (Raglan Road in DTD springs to mind) won't, but if your on the Dining Plan you'll be fine I'm sure.

The only places you do need cash for are the smaller kiosks or carts dotted around - if you want a bottle of drink as you go you'll need some cash for that.

Some of the "independent" restaurants (Raglan Road in DTD springs to mind) won't,

Raglan Road accepted our room key for payment in January.

90% of Restaurants and retail outlets within WDW will acept either the KTTW or a credit card. You're safer taking a few $$ in cash with you - just to be sure.

There are very, very few places on property that will not accept either your KTTW or credit card and the number that don't seems to shrink almost daily. The only things that come to mind that work on cash only are some of the mobile vendors. As a general rule I take $100 cash for a 4 day trip with a family of 5 and have yet to run out of cash.

I always carry a little bit of cash, just to make sure I have it if I need it, but I got away with paying for everything on my bank card last year, with no issues, so if thats an option, I'd definitely suggest it.

you could always get a disney gift card, from the resort shop, and top it up everyday, you can use those anywhere.i done this last trip for my daughter, got the card and then put some $$ on it every day for her to use, so she didnt go over budget, and she felt like she was in control!
i will be using it for myself this year to control my spending, to stop those expensive impulse purchases, i have to go back to resort and top up, which gives me time to think about weather i want it or not!

We will generally take a couple of hundred $ for buying snacks / drinks and paying for the odd taxi. Generally though it all goes on the card and we've never had a problem with that.

:sohappy:even though you are on the dining plan it does not include tips any longer so you may want to carry alittle cash for that. every thing else im sure you would be ok with only the kttw or credit/debit card. next trip 65 days and counting.:sohappy:

Thanks for all the responses! :)

I don't really know what sort of computer system is in place to take care of snack credits like popcorn and mickey bars, but I figured that with that level of computerization, we might be able to expect that even the mobile carts would be accepting plastic. But I would expect there to be a few floating around that haven't been upgraded yet. Didn't know if anyone had specific reports, though.

As for tips... I'm considering put the tips on plastic (either charging to room using KTTW or personal credit card) since they'll start to add up with the number of table service meals we're doing... but we may end up carrying $250 or so just to be safe.

We'll have to have cash for the drive to and from IL, but I was hoping to minimize worrying about actual cash if possible. Seems much hassle-free to just wave plastic around and pay the bill all together when we get home.

Are there ATM's inside the parks, I assume in the hotel lobby's ATM's are available? I like to take my debit card so I can have access to my cash but not worry about taking it all with me at once and constantly swiping my debit card and racking up fees. If I run out of daily money is it going to be hard to get more inside the parks without begging? Or snorkeling through the fountains?

Yes - I always bring it. You never know when the key swipey things will go out. And I have been to food carts that are cash only b/c they can't get hooked up to run the key swipey thingys. Do you "need" it - i'm sure you can avoid spending cash - but it's not unheard of to need it.

I can think of a few small snack / drink carts that take cash only. I would take something like $25 per day and lock what I didn't need for the day in my room safe. I know that sounds like quite a bit, but you never know when you'll need cash. There are Chase ATMs throughout the World so that may help you if you are in a cash bind. However, unless you are a Chase customer or have fee free ATM service, I would just bring my own.
