What! 100 million for Maters!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll raise my hand to say I thought it was just a redressed carnival spinner, I thought of something along the lines of a more advanced Francis' Ladybug Boogie. Looking forward to seeing what they have in store.

Yeah, i'm not sure what exactly warrants such a huge price tag! Al is saying it will be more than just a simple spinner -- can't wait to see what the Imagineers reveal at the D23 Expo. Maybe the addition of a few AAs or other special effects? Perhaps the R&D for the new swinging tractor system also raised up the price, who knows.

The R&D on this is exactly what likely spiked the price up. WDI has designed and patented a brand new ride system that is cable-driven from underground and can whip the cars either left or right as the cars travel through a series of turns following the underground cable route.

Tow Mater's Junkyard Jamboree ride systme is quite involved, but interesting for those who like reading patent applications and patent diagrams of new ride vehicles and such... http://www.freepatentsonline.com/7685944.pdf

Cars Land construction update (7/18)

The new structure at the Junkyard Jamboree construction site is taking shape. The concept art for the ride seems to indicate a Mater AA of some sort will be housed inside this shack

I remember years ago reading that Disney was going to outsource all ride systems, and that the days of in-house development were long gone. Nice to see that change.....but 100 M for an elaborate C ticket? Wow.

Yeah, no kidding. But I think we are starting to see why this would cost so much money. There are two separate ride systems side-by-side, and in the middle is a structure that will house a Tow Mater animatronic who will clatter out of this "garage" and interact with the riders and call the squaredance calls to the music.

IMG_1558.jpg

That structure pictured here appears to be Mater's new home. And it looks like a structure within a structure is being built, to help house the big animatronics inner workings and support systems. Not that that's what has pushed the budget to 100 Million, but that kind of custom construction to house a giant tow truck animatronic can't be cheap.

They clearly want to make this something more than just the teacups. I can't imagine how it all adds up to 100 Million, but I suppose this sort of work is inherently unique and involves a lot of infrastructure and support systems that you just can't buy down at Home Depot.

$100 million....that seems really high to me. It would make more sense that $10 million is the price tag. Maybe there was a zero added by mistake.

According to Disney and More, the new Aladdin magic carpet ride / Dumbo clone at DisneySea cost $22 Million -- so I guess $100 Million for this isn't too far fetched. Why do these rides cost so much?! Someone is getting ripped off.

22 Million for a nicely themed Dumbo-style spinner with some water effects.

Yup, suddenly 100 Million for a nicely themed double-tracked, proprietary design underground cable driven whip ride engineered and patented by Disney in-house with a giant interactive Mater animatronic in the middle of it doesn't sound so outrageous.

Not to say that 100 Million sounds reasonable, as it's still a shocking figure, but Junkyard Jamboree is clearly not an off-the-shelf flat spinner like you'd find at Six Flags.

No, not really. You don't just go down to the local True Value Hardware and pick up one of these things. Original components have to be designed and constructed, time and labor have to go into testing, safety issues have to be considered, etc etc ...

Not exactly something you do in your backyard.

People on this forum complain, all the time, about not seeing anything new in a relatively short timetable. Or if a ride track for one new ride is similar to that of another ride. (Because when I go to DAK and get on DINOSAUR, I plan on looking at the ride track ... ) Given the factors involved in creating something new that is supposed to both convey and entertain a large mass of people, it is, frankly, a miracle that these things don't take even longer. Or cost more.

Calm down there...no one is complaining. Just pointing out how insane it is that a ride like Dumbo costs $20 Million to make in this day and age. When you think about what else can be built with that kind of budget and how a little ride like that will effect ticket sales, it just makes you scratch your head.

Granted it was 40+ years ago, but Pirates of the Caribbean only cost $8 million. Just kind of crazy to look back and compare....

Any new updates? It's almost 3 weeks

I'll help, compliments of Miceage's Dateline Disneyland.

Here's the entrance to Cars Land as seen from the second floor cocktail lounge n' wine bar of the Golden Vine Winery. The Courthouse at the end of the street is now going up, and this structure is rumored to be the entrance and/or Fastpass distribution area for Radiator Springs Racers.

Flo's V8 Cafe is really quite a large restaurant. In the movie it was sort of the biggest building in town taking up the prime corner, but this is clearly going to be a very big restaurant complex.

IMG4148-L.jpg

And Mater's shack at Tow Mater's Junkyard Jamboree is now being framed in.

IMG4133-L.jpg

Any attempt to get all of Cars Land into one shot from the top of the Fun Wheel is very hard to do. You'd really need a helicopter or the Goodyear Blimp.

^ yes scaffolding has come down but if you look closely at the backside of the rockwork you'll see some scaffolding has gone up supposively to start on the backside of the rock

Some more pictures from a couple days ago from the fantastic Westcoaster website. (Check it out at http://www.westcoaster.net as it has really well done photo updates from around SoCal theme parks, and the young guy who manages it has a great sense of wit about him and keeps it all in perspective. We are just talking about theme parks after all, not global finance or the war on terror.)

Here's a great close up shot of the massive Cadillac Range rockwork. That's Angel Stadium in the right corner background, and beyond is the hills near Villa Park not far from where a certain TP2000 lives and keeps an eye on Disneyland from the little telescope on his deck!

080811-dca040-lrg.jpg

A lot of the exterior double-lane racing portion of the track looks to be completed, as they finish painting the rockwork on the lower levels of the Cadillac Range and around Ornament Valley.

080811-dca038-lrg.jpg

The big show building warehouse behind Cars Land has been completed for a few months now. This is where the "dark ride" slower portion of the ride will take place and where your car is prepped for the big race, after you first board your car out in the loading area and go on an outdoor driving tour of Ornament Valley. That's Katella Avenue directly behind the show building warehouse.

080811-dca027-lrg.jpg

And finally, a great look at Luigi's Flying Tires ride. That's his "tire garden" queue beyond his showroom. Those aren't test vehicles, they are planters for his garden. I can only guess that the row of heavily fortified square buildings beyond are the air compressors for the flying tires table that will lift the tires off the ground. You can see the broad, flat air compressor table on the left side of the picture. I never rode the Flying Saucers at Disneyland in the 1960's (at least not that myself or anyone in my family can remember), but I can't wait to get a chance to ride Luigi's Flying Tires next summer!

Yeah, this was part of a 3 minute video loop where you stepped inside this "Magic Vista" room and it was sort of a mini-CircleVision theater where the Cars Land construction surrounded you from several different locations around the site. It was most impressive, and impossible to convey in regular photos or video online.

Suffice it to say, Cars Land is GIANT and is themed and detailed to the Nth degree. Amazing that this is happening on the old Disneyland parking lot!

Yep, the panoramic construction shots inside the room were very impressive! I missed the Cars Land WDI discussion panel at the Expo, but fortunately it's up on YouTube now. A lot of great details there, including never-before-seen concept art. Make sure to check it out in nemofinder22's post above!

Construction at Cars Land continues at full speed, with visible progress taking place day to day. Flo's V8 Cafe was recently topped off with a wingnut-shaped finial to complement the air filter shape of the building:
