Weak argument "Hate change regardless of what it is."
I love positive change when it comes to WDW.
What I dislike is demolishing classic scenery.
Especially when there is just no good reason for it. Theming certainly isnt it and lack of space is incorrect. There is every good reason to expand the park size to put this behind BTMMR or place this into DHS as you have said. Marie

Im going to be honest and say a lot of you guys just hate change regardless of what it is.
Not true -
Take the EPCOT renovation for example -
I love the points of light added to SSE
I love they added the smart lighting to the entrance plaza
I love they restored the spires in from of SSE.
I love they got rid of the leave a legacy stones and moved them where they are.
Now that time has passed, am OK with Connections, Creations and love we still have Club Cool, its not what I would have preferred, but its OK and we still have Club Cool.
I am OK with Guardians, again not what I would have done but its OK.
I love Ratatouille as a TRUE ADDITION to EPCOT, not a destroy and replace.
I am thankful they delayed the SSE work because I worry how long it will be closed and what we will end up with when its re opens.

All that said, there are things I do not like (hate is a strong word) lets say disappointed -
The loss of Fountain of Nations, even after they said they collected water from the old FoN rto put in the new one
The awful planter! A terrible cost cutting move!
The awful rust finish everywhere in World Celebration.
The ground lighting around the awful planter.
Moana water walk through  The good news is my wife likes it so I am happy about that.
Pole dancing in EPCOT? Really? I hope they get rid of that.

There are other things, but the point is folks do not hate everything, and the sad fact is, Disney will do what Disney will do no matter what anyone thinks, and we will do what we always do, just accept it anyway, but its human to gripe about it even though it wont help.

And yet in 2005 Hong Kong Disneyland opened with the same basic lands and structure. Has something changed in the past 20 years to make the classic Disney theme park less popular?

Even Shanghai with the Iger treatment doesn’t break the mold too much.
To be fair, of the 5 main land Disneyland opened with, Frontierland was the only one cut from Hong Kong and Shanghai. Hong Kong didn't open with Frontierland, they cut it from their original plans, and their Rivers of America is the Jungle Cruise with Tarzan's Treehouse in the middle of it. They did open a Western Land in the form of Grizzly Gulch in 2012 but it's only their version of Big Thunder and Grizzly Gulch is a more exaggerated version of the Wild West than MK's Froniterland. Shanghai Disneyland has no Frontierland/Western themed land and the Canoes they have there are themed to Treasure Cove.

These two things are both true at once for me:

1. When there is so much space to expand, I would prefer Disney use expansion rather than replacement. As such, I would have preferred a shortening of the river, keeping Villains Land and maybe making it bigger, and either putting Cars in the other BBTM lot or at DHS.
2. I have no strong attachment to the river, genuinely don’t believe I’ll miss it that much, and think this Cars area has potential to be fun and even beautiful in its own way. As such, I still feel this could easily be a net-positive if done well.

It was cut because the money wasn’t there not because it was unpopular

While Cars isn’t my first choice for an IP I’m definitely looking forward to see what they come up with.

The concept as far as the environment goes looks very promising.

The recent announcements cover the whole spectrum for me...

- Zootopia replacing Tough to be a Bug - I really like this one
- Encanto replacing Dino-land - I really like this one, although it is sad to loose dinosaurs as part of the park
- Monsters Coaster - Love the ride idea, just don't like loosing Muppets for it.
- Villains land - Great idea that is long overdue
- Cars in MK - Loss of the river is a travesty that will really harm the park for me. The attraction idea is cool, just not in MK.

I’m not sure even Magic Kingdom is inherently a bad choice. Imagine going off into a Kilimanjaro type space off “Beyond Big Thunder.” One of the blatant contradictions is saying the River is not convincing as part of a bigger space but then insisting a smaller space will be more convincing.

But the original plans for Hong Kong Disneyland's was to be very different to the original version, leaning less into the Wild West theme and more into the Wild nature theme
Frontierland is a walk right into the American Old West of the 1880s. Here park guests explore a frontier outpost at Fort Comstock. They might also take a frightfully funny trip through a haunted mansion, shoot the rapids on a river raft ride, or experience for themselves just how tough it is to be a bug in a one-of-a-kind show.
