MK Cars-Themed Attractions at Magic Kingdom

But things change over time - if Disneyland was built from scratch now the lands chosen would be very different.

The ones selected were relevant to the times and fit with properties (IP) Disney had and were popular (True Life Adventures, Davy Crockett, etc)

And 40 years from now other things will be relevant

Doesn't mean every change will be the correct one and always will depend on execution - personally I think at a minimum the margin for error on this one is very high but always willing to see the end product before deciding if my visits will be better or worse
And yet these more relevant parks don’t match the success of Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom. We’re even getting a brand new park this year and outside delusional fanboy dreams there is no expectation that it’ll have close to that level of visitation, much less cultural cache.

At this point it feels more like "Domestic Adventureland" focusing on exploring different parts of North America contrasting to existing Adventureland which is more exploring South America, Africa, and Asia

I’ve mentioned this before, but the accidental thread is Wilderness Land. Unfortunately they’ve used that too much. Unless we buy that the MK resorts are extensions of various lands.

I mean that is kinda the case I took the wilderness lodge tour for my birthday last year and I was told all about how the hotels were themed to the different lands of the magic kingdom and that the art of animation was a fantasyland hotel make of that what you will

It being Cars is not a hang up for me in the slightest.
Matter of fact, I would have welcomed the real cars behind Big Thunder, or at Hollywood Studios.
The destruction of Rivers of America is the most disgusting, clueless, and inforgivable the Disney could do in my opinion this side of taking down the castle.
🏆 I don't care if I go to wdwmagic jail, you deserve a trophy

This is the sentiment that I just don’t connect with at all. I don’t have that attachment for RoA.

And yet in 2005 Hong Kong Disneyland opened with the same basic lands and structure. Has something changed in the past 20 years to make the classic Disney theme park less popular?

Even Shanghai with the Iger treatment doesn’t break the mold too much.

I don’t think the classic Disney theme park is any less popular today than it was 20 years ago but Walt would have of course designed Disneyland definitely if it was built today let’s face it as much as
We like to hype up the different themes of the parks Disneyland was just whatever Walt thought he should build no different from epic universe

Im going to be honest and say a lot of you guys just hate change regardless of what it is.

While Cars isn’t my first choice for an IP I’m definitely looking forward to see what they come up with.

The concept as far as the environment goes looks very promising.

I personally believe it's a dangerous thing to simplify the anger at this announcement to simply "fear of change". Yes, the Disney Parks fandom has a long history of pessimism towards new things, but I think that's partly a perception thing, as when you think about it, our fandom is huge and made up of a massive diversity of opinions and tastes. It isn't that the entire fandom is hateful towards everything, it's that each new announcement will likely annoy at least one loud person in the community. The rest of us may instead feel positively towards it. We're not all hypocritical forever-haters.

Here, though, the announcement is of the unofficial death of Frontierland, a core castle park land, or at least the main theme of the land. Let's be real here, Cars does NOT fit into Frontierland at all, unless you are to change the land's theme to be a more basic read of the land's title, which is dumb and reductive ('Frontierland' is now the land of literal frontiers and environments, no longer about a point in time with its people and values and history that affected the future). Heck, even insiders were saying before D23 that the IP picked to replace the ROA "didn't fit the land at all".

I personally don't grieve the loss of the Rivers and (especially) Tom Sawyer's Island as much as other people do, although I do think Frontierland will be hurt massively for not having the Liberty Bell travelling around and adding much-needed kinesis and placemaking to the environment. But I am furious about Cars. I know I can't stop it, and I even like the Cars films, but we all have to be honest with ourselves here and see that this announcement was the first bad omen, the first warning to the future where it will only get worse from here. You can put any IP anywhere. Theme is dead.

No land is safe from irrelevant drivel that only furthers the undermining of the implicit artistry of themed entertainment, that will guarantee that the art we love is ruined slowly, and we will once again be the laughing stock of the art world as just "the expensive holiday destination where vapid thrill rides bankrupt the mindless Disney adults who adore their favourite corporation". This is why I'm mad, why I think everyone is mad, even if they haven't all consciously gone fully down this train of thought yet. And therefore I think our anger is justified here.

Maybe I'm just a crazed fool screaming at clouds again. I have some self-awareness at how pretentious this all sounded lol, I could just be over-reacting here to a new theme park ride announcement. Time will tell!

What could they even replace it with? Maybe we get a retheme with Disney characters that’s the “worst case scenario”
That would be bad but I don’t think that’s going to happen
Disneyland literally has its abandoned Rocket Jets ride mechanism sitting above the land. It’s something they’ve already done.

Weak argument "Hate change regardless of what it is."
I love positive change when it comes to WDW.
What I dislike is demolishing classic scenery.

I think Cars is a complete, utter travesty of an IP pick. I'm of the belief that, half of the river should be preserved, and while I'll take Tom Sawyer as an acceptable loss, the complete annihilation of a body of water for this land is egregious and will only ruin the current "art style" of Frontierland.

What Cars is set to be (a beautiful, national park-like area) is at odds with what Frontierland is largely right now, a dingy, dirty environment themed after the West with sprinkles of the South. Cars looks to be themed after the Northern national parks and I can't say that will mesh at all with what's there currently.

A few pages ago I was advocating for keeping half of the ROA and turning half into a "sleepy hollow"- like area, which would fit what's currently there for Frontierland better, especially with the connecting feature of the ROA.

People who are going around saying "there's plenty of other dingy canals to look at in Florida" are either going to eat crow when Cars opens and they see it doesn't fit at all, or be first in line when they open "MATER'S ROOTIN TOOTIN TATER TOT STAND" and sell a Mater Tater Tot Bucket for $49.99+tax.

I agree with you but what’s wrong with the latter?
