Depends on when you were planning on booking it. If you were going to wait to book it then at least the construction around Centertown might be done.

Key word there is "might". According to the one drawing I saw, there will be significant destruction and construction over there. Maybe by February they would have some semblance of something, but by our trip in December I am not taking the chance. We moved to POR.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they go all out with the pirate theming for this new building.

I would. I would be absolutely shocked if they themed a DVC to a certain franchise like that.
I could see them refurbing some of the other building exteriors to be more 'piratey', but not the DVC.

We are currently booked for preferred room in CBR in November. Do you think Old Port Royale will be back open by then? Would you move to CSR or just remain in CBR?

Actually that is an awesome idea... Put The Black Pearl in the lake there... Make the pool and food court areas look like a pirate port... Like they did years ago with the Treasure Island casino in Vegas...that would sure make it a Wow!

I agree. I'm not a fan of the movies but an immersive generic pirate themed resort would be a great addition. Shanghai has a pirate land which would be a great basis for the theming.

On a more general point I'd love to see more resorts heavily themed like this to create a true fantasy experience rather than a replica of an existing vacation destination. A CBR based on this would be far more unique than what's there now and much closer to ideas like the never build Persian and Asian resorts

First time Disney vacationer here, booked CBR for mid Sept and concerned about the impact of the construction as we were hoping to mix park days and pool days so as not to overdo it all in one go. Would consider switching to POR/POFQ but one of the reasons for picking CBR was that there was a good chance we would get the free dining package when they get announced. I take it once Centertown is closed so may be the feature pool area also?

Really not sure what to do??

I'm not following that free dining wouldn't be available elsewhere. If you go to POR/POFQ, nothing says you can't switch again if you need to.

The feature pool is not planned to close.

I don't know if Centretown will be done at that point, I doubt it. However, pool should be okay. There was no mention of pool refurb in the announcement, plans or when I talked with various CM's.

POR/FQ might be the safer choice at this point, even if you need to sacrifice free dining.

Thanks for confirming in the pool. I was going by the past information on Disney tourist blog that indicates that certain accommodation is except and that has included POR/POFQ in the past. I'll probably call guest services tomorrow and see what they have to offer.

First when it comes to free dining my understanding is that you can not upgrade an existing package you have to book new and cancel your existing package. As @dmatt87 said it should not matter what resorts you book at this point because when you sign up for free dining you will have to cancel that reservation anyway.

Second I am very interested as how this will affect free dinning. We want to go first week of September and are waiting to book to see if we can get free food. In the past CBR and CSR have been staples on the free dining seen as their large room count made them harder to fill... now with parts of CSR and like half of CBR being out of service it will be very interesting to see what impacts this has on the free dining promotion.

Thanks to everyone for the good info, I had already booked dining in the package anyway just so I knew what the budget would be if free dining didn't happen. Guess I will call guest services and see about a switch to POR and what they can do with the cost difference.

I am curious as well about how this impacts any potential free dining offers. We are planning a trip for late November/early December and will be watching closely. We were hoping for CSR. I actually see already where Disney is showing very limited availability for CSR and CBR during these times...

I'm going to be honest. You are not going to live out of a food truck for your entire vacation. Yes they will be running off of food trucks at the resort, but it's Disney World. You are pretty much only eating at the resort for breakfast. Then in the parks for dinner.

May 1st is the start of a multiple phase project. First phase is the complete closure and remodel of Old Port Royale. Possibly a name change. And I promise the final product going in will be completely different than the current version. Not just a retheaming like they did with the French Quarter refurb. New seating areas and layouts and new services being offered there. Let alone shutters being out by the water where the movie is shown every night.

This of course is once it's finished. People that are staying there during the construction will not have it that bad. They did a running test last year in Trinidad South having the exact same service and seeing how people reacted to it. They set up a food truck by the pool and converted one of the rooms into a Grab N Go. It was actually pretty cool and well received. Let alone the great breakfast that came from it. It will be similar but more large scale. I know people may be thinking car sales stripy tent with hot dogs and dirty old tables with food trucks everywhere. This will not be the case. And mug refills will still be an option. Probably via freestyle. (Even though I'm not a fan of those machines and how they make regular flavors taste terrible and smell like vinegar)

Disney will try and make things better as much as they can. But seriously folks. How much time in the day are you spending looking at construction vs being in the parks/springs. I understand pool days, and the pools will not be touched minus the Barbados pool (RIP).

....leave your retaliation below......

You can convert an existing reservation to a free dining promotion, though you may have to change some details (resort or room category, ticket options, etc). I do it for clients all the time.
I can't imagine there will be much if any free dining with a good chunk of rooms out of service and with the likelihood of increased demand with avatar opening. I hope I am wrong though.

If it were just me and my husband going I would agree with you regarding the food. However, we are going with two young children who can be a bit picky. At home we fight about it, at vacation not so much. The benefit to the Food Court is one could get the Mickey Waffles he wanted so much, while the other gets pancakes, the husband can get a full breakfast of bacon, eggs, and other fixin's, (from the deep south :)), and I get something less calorie dense. I also enjoy relaxing in the hotel bar at night after a long day at the parks. We were also going to eat at Shutters as a family the first night we got there.

Like I said, if it were just the two adults, so what, we can deal. But this is my child's special birthday, her first visit, and we don't want to deal with the hassle. (I know, first world problems).

Finally, even if it were just my husband and I, I would only stay if they discounted the price. This resort still costs over $200 a night in the summer for upgraded rooms and amenities. If a large portion of the upgraded amenities (bar and restaurant) are closed, the difference between this resort and other value resorts becomes smaller. Simply put, the resort is no longer really worth $200. It may still be worth more than the Value resorts, but not a normal moderate resort either.
