Carded for Energy Drinks

Time for me to relay another thread for wdwishes2005 as he's at WDW this week.

Apparently he was trying to get a Red Bull at Swan but they asked to see ID, he told the lady he just wanted a Red Bull, and asked if she knew it was non-alcoholic. She said yeah, but they told her she needed to start carding people when they wanted to buy energy drinks. Anybody's thoughts on this? And anyone know where else in WDW he can get one without being carded?

As a minor, I think that is a bit ridiculous, as long as it is legal for a minor to consume energy drinks, they should also be able to purchase them.

Well you said he was trying to get it from the SWAN right? If thats correct the swan is not a WDW owned resort hotel and they can set what ever guide lines they want to inside of there hotel. This does not mean that if you went to POP and got a energy drink that you will get carded.

As far as I know, energy drinks are legal for people of all ages to consume and therefore purchase. I would have asked to speak to a manager and, if necessary, raised heck.

I've never been carded buying energy drinks or even cocktail mixes (which pretty much alludes to the fact that I'm going to be drinking later).

I am SO GLAD that I turn 21 in less than a month, then I can do everything (smoke, drink, buy lotto, buy , have an abortion without anyone's consent, and apparently buy energy drinks).

Up here in Canada, they have put warnings on Energy drinks that they are not to be consumed by children as they have stuff it them that is not good for them... aka...immense levels of caffeine....obviously I have no idea how old you are, but in my personal opinion...energy drinks are getting a little our of hand...there is no reason the normal person should need to partake in them....

Chris

Plus Red Bull is just disgusting tasting...:hurl:

The concern is probably not the content of the energy drinks as much as the fact that Red Bull is a popular mixer with alcohol. But then so is Coke, so maybe I'm totally off.

I was a Cold Drink Account Mgr for Coke in SW fla.We never had any issues with age restrictions in Fla for Energy Drinks. The only issue we had was that we could not sell our brands to Fla Gulf Coast Univ. since one ingredient made the athletes fail their drug tests. We sold Full Throttle,Rock Star,KMX, and Von Dutch Energy Drinks.

It is becoming more common for places to card for energy drinks. Many of those drinks contain items that really aren't the best things for adults to drink let alone kids. In addition to huge ammounts of caffeine, some high-energy drinks contain ma huang (a form of ephedrine), guarana and taurine, also these drinks were intended for short occasional energy burst not to be drank like water which is what many kids do. It is a good possibility that the store is being a little proactive on the issue and covering it's but from a liability standpoint.

Here is an article on the subject.

Yeah, that's understandable. But did you say Guarana is bad? Dude, nobody's taking my Bawls away from me...

Guarana helps reduce the risk of heart attack, helps people lose weight, increased memory retention, and increased physical endurance.

Like most supplements the dosage is important. Ephedrine is relatively safe in small doses but you can run into trouble when bone heads have the "If 2 work great then 50 will work even better" attitude.

Many people think that just because a supplement is natural that it can be taken in nearly any quantity and that just is not the case.

Guarana for all intents and purposes is a highly concentrated form of caffeine. The negative health effects of long term high level caffeine use can range from gastrointestinal problems, adrenal exhaustion to coronary vasospasms. The only long term study I have ever seen on it showed no significant effects on memory. About the only thing that has been conclusively proved about guarana is its use in treating chronic diarrhea.

That is werid. I would never have thought that. I buy Rockstars all the time at the Adv. Club and they never ask, or maybe it is because I go there a lot.

Sounds like to me that Disney is being proactive here. There is mounting opinion that there should be age restrictions on the purchasing of "energy drinks".
