Captain Cook's reopening

I hate to say it 'Sweetpee' but I wonder if the bean counters at Disney were finding the Arcades to be redundant or no longer cost effective, since most teens, and even tweens, now have internet connected phones that they can play these games for 'free' on ???
True. I know. This was before 6 year olds had smart phones. Just stating a value to those places that isn't the most obvious. ;) We did witness a mother once hand her 3 kids $100, her cell phone, then very sternly instructed them not to return to the room until she called them. Funniest thing ever because we knew why. ;)

Those kids better be glad they were not born in Russia!! Branson MO, Comedian Yakov Smirnoff quips about being made to stand looking out of a corner window with his back to his parents, while they engaged in 'business' in their 1 room Moscow apartment. He suddenly says "Hey Ma ! I think the Romanovs across the street are doing some 'business' too!! "How do you know??" his mother queries... "Because I can see my friend Yuri standing looking out the window, too!!"

Sorry - I couldn't resist...

Argghhh! The grownup grilled cheese is gone! It was one of the tastiest sandwich on property, we're local and sometimes went there specifically for it. Looks like they didn't replace it with any other meatless options either, leaving only a plain cheese pizza as the only vegetarian option =( Not much reason to stop there now.

What is going into the former art gallery again? is that where you all are talking about the dolewhips being located?

The store walls were removed. The Pineapple Lanai will open in its place but you will get to the walk up window from outside. It will serve Dole products including Dole Whips. There will be seating out in the area that was once the inside of the gallery.

Good riddance to those touch screen ordering machines I say. They clashed horribly and were often glitchy whenever I visisited.

Kind of curious to see if they'll also remove the kiosks from Contempo Cafe. While I personally don't mind them and have never had an issue, they do seem redundant and speaking from a food service background, don't seem to improve speed or efficiency to the process.

Also, has anyone tried the coconut curry meatballs? I would have expected a sweet and our or teriyaki sauce, so as a curry fan, they have my interest.

It may have been more so they don't have to pay as many employees, not so much about making the ordering process more speedy and efficient. Taking away employee jobs has been an argument point against self checkouts at grocery stores for instance. That criticism comes up whenever automation takes away from human labor. I don't know if that's the case with the Disney self order kiosks though.

At the very least computerized self ordering machines don't clash with the concept of the Contemporary. The Polynesian however isn't appropriate for such a thing IMO.

So the parents could drink diet coke and play checkers, right?

They don’t really replace humans at Contempo. though. There are still people that hand you your order, and people that ring you up. They could take the screens out, have you put in your order/pay first, then pick up food in the same way. I think the screens are more efficient, but they don't really save on labor (unless you could pay at them, which would be neat.)

I really like the new framed destination pictures on the walls in the seating area (they're classy and have a retro vibe to them), and the new hanging ceiling light fixtures are pretty nice as well. The chairs i'm not as bit of a fan of. The new bamboo design isn't terrible in of itself (they may even be more comfortable than the old ones), but the old chairs had a more elaborate leaf design that I liked a lot (much less generic). The new upholster on the booths is very generic, as are the bland new tabletop designs compared to the old ones. I'm also not a fan of the new flooring either.

Here's a picture of the seating area pre-refurb for comparison to Steve's pics in the link above-

Looks better than Club 33.

Those retro island posters are fantastic!

The posters reflect the names of the longhouses including the new name for the Bungalows (Bora Bora) and the name changing back to the original names for Tahiti (Moorea) and Rapa Nui (Pago Pago).

Pineapple Lanai should open today or tomorrow.

With all the areas being refurbed at Poly, have the rooms been refurbed any time lately?
I tried to find a thread on it, but can't seem to find one.
