It is a sad day in TV Land.

The third true pioneer in children's television, Captain Kangaroo (Bob Keeshan), has died....

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/01/23/entertainment/main595419.shtml

I consider him among three men who truly defined what children's television should be: Walt Disney (The Mickey Mouse Club, 1950s), Mr. Rogers (1960s +), and Capt. Kangaroo (1950s - 1980s)...

They are all sorely missed today. And today we will miss the Captain...

:(

I grew up watching the Captain every morning. I remember him, Mr. Greenjeans, Mr. Moose, Knock-knock jokes and ping pong balls, Bunny Rabbit, and the magic drawing board. Sad day for all of us who remember him so well.

Oh man!

I can't believe this. I too, grew up watching him and Mr. Green Jeans. I think this is where I got hooked on watching Felix the Cat. :lookaroun

RIP, dear friend.

Me too! :(

I grew up with Bob Keeshan in the late 50s...watched him every morning before heading out to school. He was our Sesame Street. He made me laugh out loud. Thank YOU, Mr. Keeshan!

God Bless Captain Kangaroo!

Felix the Cat!!!!!! I had forgotten about him....

Felix the Cat
The Wondeful Wonderful Cat
Whenever he gets in a fix
he reaches into his bag of trix
Felix the the cat
The wonderful wonderful cat
You'll laugh so hard your sides will ache
your heart will go pitter pat
That's Felix, he's the wonderful cat

(careful Scott, we're showing our age. :lookaroun )

This brings back good memories. My family has a picture of my brother and I taken in 1972 from our room at the Contemporary with Capt. Kangaroo on in the background.
Whenever someone gets a thousand ping pong balls dropped on his head, I'll think of him.

Wow, he was only in his 40s when I watched his show back in the 70s. With the white hair he had back then I would have guessed him to be in his 90s now.

My Tribute to Bob Keeshan

Statler Brothers
Flowers On The Wall

I keep hearing you're concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you're giving me is conscience, I guess
If I were walking in your shoes I wouldn't worry none
While you and your friends are worrying 'bout me, I'm having lots of fun

Counting flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo
So don't tell me I've nothing to do

Last night I dressed in tails pretended I was on the town
As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down
So please don't give a thought to me I'm really doing fine
You can always find me here and having quite a time

Counting flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo
So don't tell me I've nothing to do

It's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright
Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete
So I must go back to my room and make my day complete

Counting flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo
So don't tell me I've nothing to do

I thought the same thing...maybe 86....
Do a little math....he was around our age when we watched him as kids and we thought he was old then. So, kids today look at us as being really old......

*gets depressed and goes to bed early*

Bob's first television appearance came in 1948 (when he was 21), when he played the voiceless, horn-honking Clarabell the Clown on the "Howdy Doody Show," a role he created and played for five years on NBC. In 1955 (when he was 28) he became Captain Kangaroo on CBS.

Which would have made him 30 when I was born. :lookaroun
