Can They Expand??

Flaming, trolling what's the difference? He is getting you all to respond to him, tossing the thread off track, and getting the attention he isn't getting from Mommy... Ignore the doofus and he'll go away...

Actually, this one hasn't really thrown the topic, just caused a few of us to repeat ourselves in an attempt to point them towards factual information and maybe providing a bit more than was previously out there. In some ways, I often find myself more interested in the land deals/infrastructure/etc. of the resorts than the actual attractions lately. Much more grounded in reality and not as much "opinion" involved.

Let's all be real here. We all know that Comcast tried to buy Disney and was rejected. So what. That it has nothing to do with what either company is doing now. Both companies are expanding and it is best for everyone who loves theme parks and their attractions.

Sarcasm and spoof.

Sometimes you have to read the entire thread as a whole to understand the sarcasm instead of reading individual posts.

I am going to continue to go to both sets of parks, and enjoying both. Disney is the omlette and Uni the bacon. :)

I do think Disney is on the upswing but I really can not see Uni ever surpassing Disney at much of anything that brings us to the parks. I hope they both continue to grow like crazy.

Well then, I have to ask, what brings you to the parks? Is it state of the art attractions, theming, and resort hotels? Or is it "Disney". Because no matter how much money Universal spends they can't build "Disney". They can build better attractions and more luxurious resort hotels, but it's still not "Disney".

Personally, I'm over "Disney". $700/night hotel rooms, crowded mismanaged parks, and surly customer service isn't my idea of a "world class vacation".

The Disney bubble baby!

It's the ability to step into the WDW resort and emerge a week latter all smiles and never getting bored for that week. It's the parks, the resorts, the restaurants, fireworks and parades and all the other activities. It's the comfort of DVC and feeling like we are where we are suppose to be that week. It's going different times of the year and having a different experience. It's the NSSHP and the Headless Horseman, the Boo To You parade and Hallowishes! It's the total immersion and the feeling that you are somewhere special for that week. The familiar sights and sounds and new things being built as a well. It the cast members and and their friendliness. It's the little things like Magic Bands and not having to carry a key, wallet or anything for that matter. It having a plan day to day as to what we will do at what times but not having that plan so restrictive that it ruins any chance at being impulsive. It the ability to do everything or nothing each day. It the old memories, the ones we are making right then and the knowledge that we will make many more in the future, many of them in the same location again and again. It's about the rides, not the thrill of them but the "comfort" of them. I don't get thrilled going on HM, Spaceship Earth or PotC but I sure get comfort.

Uni runs a great park but they do not have the Disney bubble. They may have something like it someday but to me they are a long way off from it right now. We spent 7 days in June of 2013 at the Hard Rock and the Uni Parks. A week there is just too long IMO. The Hard Rock is nice but it lacked any of the charm that the Disney resorts have for us. I never felt I was at a Uni hotel, just a nice hotel. The rides at Uni are more high tech no doubt, and they have some great old school rides as well. Ripsaw Falls might be my favorite ride in all of Orlando. But overall the rides don't provide the comfort of the rides at Disney to us.

I will put it this way, give me a day in Orlando and a choice of either Uni or WDW and WDW wins hands down every time :)

Like I said we really like Uni but we love WDW.

Thank Steve for the Ignore feature... Reading some of these posts, I swear, makes my IQ lower... List gets longer and longer....

As for the topic at hand, the next 10 years should be very interesting at Universal... And I can't wait to see what they have in store for us... I'm not foolish enough to believe (and I know most of us aren't) their 10 year plan will go flawlessly and without a hitch... I know they will run into road bumps, things will change... But even if they do half or 3/4 of the rumored plans, WOW....

I understand your fondness of Disney. I started taking my DS then DD 26 years ago for that reason. I still love the place with my whole heart but there is a but. It isn't the same. Disney has changed. They use to give it their all in every direction, it isn't that way anymore. Disney now is about the quick gimmicks. 'show your Disney Side' '24 hour day' 'Villain night' I remember the 25th Anniversary well and all that went into that celebration. Mickey's Birthday they built a new land complete with a mini musical. I miss that.

I also find it hard to compare Hard Rock to a DVC. We stay at the Portofino that is an elegant resort and a better resort to compare to DVC digs.

It's all personal preference. We love it and to us that is all that matters. To us there is so much to look forward to each trips and now with new stuff on the way even more so. But I think it's the existing stuff that we love the most, even more than any excitement over the new.

It's not the level of elegance that draws us to the WDW resorts, it's the theming and placement. Like I said HR was a fine hotel but lacked any immersion into the parks for us. To each his own of course, but I would rather stay at say POR than any of the Uni hotels for that reason. We are not a either our family, we do both sets of parks but Disney is the base and Uni is the excursion for us.

One thing I think Uni needs to improve upon is the fireworks / closing show each night. It's rather lame at Uni IMO and the kids, well it does not appeal to them at all as they do not know 75% of the movies used during it. The fireworks at say MK really cap off the day for us. I think Uni could pull off a heck of a fireworks show but not even sure it's on their list. But imagine what they could do over Hogwarts :)

Nothing says immersion like giant disney buses vs boat pulling up to Italian harbor. ;)

I can't think of anything that is not over the top immersion at the Portofino. From the perfect deception of the Italian City followed up with a bay that matches its real sister city. It has not one but 3 themed pools that also are themed to the resort. Hard Rock is just what you would expect for a budget minded resort, it is themed, it has a better resort pool than most of the Disney Resorts at the same price points. That is why I had/have a problem with comparing it to a DVC, apples and oranges. POR has to be my favorite resort overall and when it was Dixie it did indeed depict that time and place and overall era. I love that resort but it did loose the overall theme when Disney corrected its unfortunate misstep in theming and naming of the resort. When you make a politically incorrect blunder there is only so much one can do to rewrite the story and pretend Dixie didn't happen at WDW or in history.
