Pre-Trip Can I Return These Shoes? They Hurt My Feet. - A September 2018 Pre-Trip Report

"Can I Return These Shoes? They Hurt My Feet."

Yes – Those were the words my husband uttered as we were unpacking from our last trip. If you have no idea what I’m talking about you obviously need to go back and read my last TR…

https://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/hurricanes-foot-pains-and-“what-the-crocs-just-happened-”-anniversary-tale-–-a-sept-irma-2017-tr-completed.934251/

Of course the shoe drama didn’t happen until day 15.

If you are all caught up and you are still willing to read on and join us again for as @blgauger says, “Ross’ Shenanigans”, well then, please read on.

Just in case you don’t know our crazy family… Here we are…

Me: Mary – I am a high school English teacher turned homeschool and blogger mom. (Although I am SO BAD at updating my web page.) I have always been a Disney fan and love all things Disney.

IMG_0632.JPG

My hubby: Ross – my nutty, “frugal” husband who always seems to add some drama to our trip. He drives me crazy, but he is the hardest working guy I know who makes a lot of sacrifices so we can go on these trips.

Julia – my now sweet 16 daughter who I hope never grows out of going to Disney with her family. Although college seems to be getting in the way of our most loved September trip. (BTW, She usually doesn’t dress all in black. This was her costume from the production of “Much Ado About Nothing” our homeschool group put on. She was backstage & props.) She’s had a tough year with some health issues that are thankfully working out okay – so that’s definitely something I will be celebrating this year.

IMG_0153.jpg

Hope – my 9 year old daughter who is boycotting all omnimover rides. She is Autistic and the reason why I started writing TR’s. So many people told me I was crazy for taking a kid with so many “issues” to Disney that I really wanted to highlight the positives and show how successful a trip to Disney with a special needs kid could be. Sadly, this will be her last year as a “kid”. Next year, she will age into a Disney “adult”.

IMG_0567.jpg

And of course, here are the shoes of contention…

IMG_0729.JPG

Here we all are at Great Wolf Lodge (except for the Crocs). We went for the first time this year with our homeschool group that managed to get an AWESOME rate.

IMG_0472.JPG

So yes, as the TR title states, Ross has decided that he wants to see if he can return the Crocs he purchased last year. He figures since he barely wore them and the fact they hurt his feet so much, that it is a reasonable request. I will bring to your attention that Ross and the word “reasonable” sometimes rarely go together. Nonetheless, he is on a mission and firmly believes he has a good case.

Now I spent 15 years in retail management and some of the WORST memories I have are the people who would present me with a pair of jeans to return with nasty stains, ripped bottoms and no tags - and yet swear that, “I’ve never worn them.” So thinking about my husband trying to return his less than loved Crocs is not sitting well with me.

At first I wasn’t too concerned. I thought for sure he would long forget about them as the year went on. He even managed to purchase another pair of sandals that he likes almost as much as the ones Julia stepped on. (I forced him to buy a second pair of them – just in case.) He has also learned to walk a few steps to the side of Julia.

However, when he bought his new shoes a few months after we returned home, he brought up the topic again. Then, as I sat down at our 180 mark to make our ADR’s, he again reminded me of the Crocs, now covered with dust in his closet, and announced he planned on trying to return them. Seriously? Even in the depths of our North East winter as he came in after shoveling snow, his mind returned to those lonely Crocs as he mentioned his hopes that Disney would take them back and give him a merchandise credit.

So here we are, into double digits and quickly approaching our 60 day FP+ date, and he is NOT forgetting about the those Crocs.

These are becoming desperate times. I am now on a mission to “misplace” the Crocs before our September journey. Will I succeed? I don’t know. But if I do not, I made it clear that I am not having anything to do with this craziness. I am not packing them, carrying them or walking with him into the store if he does attempt to make this transaction. I don’t even want to hear about them. He is on his own with this endeavor. Will he actually go through with it? Your guess is as good as mine. But I promise I will document the tale for all of you… because let’s be honest, how else would anyone believe me?

Okay... Fast Passes are made! I was able to get Slinky Dog on both of our Studios days and FOP on our AK day. I also made a FP for Splash Mountain for all of us. Will this be the year Hope makes a splash?? She says she is going to, but we shall see.

I have such a crazy couple of months ahead of us I find myself starting to pack for Disney now! Am I crazy? I pulled out Hope's dresses and told her to pick which ones she wants to wear in the parks. Of course her answer was. "All of them." So I have to break it to her that she can not take her entire royal wardrobe with her.

I also have a "signature" dilemma. For our water park day, I made an ADR for dinner at Narcoossee's and brunch at CG. I now realize that I should only keep one - so which should I choose? I am leaning more towards dinner, but I heard a lot of great stuff about the brunch at CG. I can't decide and when I ask Ross what he thinks, I get, "
Whatever you want." What do you guys think?

I was able to all our FP's except for one day where I'm not sure what park we will be in. But I guess I should just take a guess and make FP's for a park. I was glad to have gotten Slinky Dog for both our HS days. I wonder if the lines will be as long as FOP was last year?

I think we will keep the dinner. I like relaxing at the end of the day and hopefully we will get to see the fireworks too. It's getting so close!!

I vote for dinner. I feel like you’d lose too much of your water park time doing brunch. Although I agree that brunch sounds amazing.

I agree - I never thought about missing out of water park time. I think we will stick with the dinner, although brunch sounded so good! We've never done CG, but maybe one day... Thanks for reading!

Are you planning on doing the brunch before going to the water park? Or are you going to the water park and then leaving to go to brunch? I'm not understanding how the brunch will fit into the schedule with a water park day, because I know when we did the water parks in 2016, they didn't open until 10.....so you really wouldn't get to do anything before you had to leave for your brunch. And you'd need time to change clothes in there somewhere. But, if you do the brunch first, then I'm guessing you aren't planning to be at the water park at rope drop, but then the lines are HUGE. Of course, if you aren't going for 2 more months, maybe they won't be as crowded?

I thought we could do brunch first then water park then back to the hotel to change and then dinner. But the more I think about it, I think only 1 sit down meal would be best for us. So then I needed to decide which to keep. Since I'd rather get an early start to TL, I think it's best to stick with dinner. But gosh that brunch looks so good! lol The only time we did the water parks was last year after Irma and they were so empty! I guess it's going to be a shock to see how busy they really get!

With all the talk about the great shoe exchange, I forgot to mention our plans.

When we booked the bounce back last year, we found out that only QS dining was included with the Moderates which was a bummer, but I’d rather Free QS than no free dining at all. However we had to make a choice. At first we thought about booking at WL but realized we could only afford a short stay. I would rather trade the deluxe for more days of Disney, so the deluxe dream was nixed! lol

We could book at POR and keep the QS or book at a Value and upgrade our dining. We all seemed to put more value on where we ate rather than where we slept, so it was decided… we would book at a value and then upgrade to the basic dining plan. Which value did we choose? Hope of course wanted AoA – but we weren’t getting a suite so that was out. We have stayed at ASMovies in the past and I don’t think Hope has any memories of it so that was an option. Ross suggested AS Music… but none of us really liked it that much. In the end, we decided the lure of renovated rooms at POP would win out. So that was our decision. Both of the girls were excited to return to POP.

The timing of Free Dining (we had to check in by September 8th) along with Ross’ schedule would spoil us girls once again because it allowed for another girls only beginning of the trip.

Ross got delusional and thought it would be nice to have 2 separate reservations so the girls and I could have park tickets too. He’s very sweet and I appreciate his kindness, but he was out of his mind! It was way too expensive! We ending up canceling it later in the year when he came back to reality. So we were set for September 8th – 22nd at POP and Ross would arrive on the 12th. It was settled... until Little Miss Hope wrapped her daddy around her fingers and said, “You’re gonna go to Art Of Animation in 2018?”

Well… No Hope, we’re not.

But it didn’t take daddy long to decide to send us in a day early to stay one night at AoA in a mermaid room. Needless to say, Hope is beyond excited.

Ross would regret that decision when we went to book our flights and saw that the cost to fly on Friday was an extra $300! I have no idea why Friday fares were so much more expensive than Saturday, but it was what it was. What does Ross do? If you’re think he broke the bad news to Hope and told her why we couldn’t spend that extra day at AOA you would be wrong. Instead he grumbled as he said he rather pay the extra night at AOA instead of $300 more on a plane ticket. So yes dear friends, we are now going September 6th – 22nd. I suggested we just move to Florida and buy annual passes, but sadly, that can’t happen right now. But I’m still counting on Hope’s plan to move - which is down to 9 years now.

So we leave NY the morning of September 6th and check into AoA and we will them switch on the 8th to POP for the duration of our trip. Ross will join us on the 12th for the shenanigans part of our adventure and the big shoe return.

Right now, our plans look like this...

9/6 Arrive, swim at AoA and then diner at Blaze
9/7 Swim, Visit monorail resorts, Visit project 89, visit AKL, dinner at DS probably Balze again.
9/8 Hop to POP, Swim, dinner undecided either Polite Pig or Captain Cooks?
9/9 Typoon Lagoon, dinner at
Homecoming
9/10 Girls only park day - starting at Epcot then either HS or MK
9/11 Blizzard Beach, dinner at AKL
9/12 (Ross arrives) MK
9/13 HS
9/14 AK
9/15 E
9/16 TL
9/17 ?? Not sure what park this day
9/18 E
9/19 MK
9/20 ??
9/21 MK

9/22 BB for us girls (Ross is going to AK) and then Home Sweet Home

I was so hoping to be able to meet up with @ScarletBegonias @MomofPrincessGrace @DisneyShe and @Matt and Kelly b
ut it doesn’t seem that our plans will intersect at all. Of course maybe @Tuvalu will turn her "Summer of Disney" into a "Fun-Filled Fall of Disney". Or perhaps local residents @blgauger and @wishes2013 will be out and about. If anyone does see us - please say hi!

I'll be there on the 20th--we got the Passholder Play Time for Toy Story Land so I know we'll be in Disney then. We haven't booked anything else yet(including flights). Once we do I'll see if any of our plans match up. I'm planning a last minute trip for next month right now:eek:--I'll take care of September's after I'm done booking August's!!

We are all over the place when we are there. Notorious park hoppers lol but we may decide to go to a park on the 10th before we leave that day. I will keep an eye out for you and definitely say hello if you see us. :)

Great to read all about your planning. You’ll be heading for all the fun a week after we get back and are full of the post trip blues. I always like the last couple of months of anticipation.

Wow! Choosing between dinner at Narcoossee's and Brunch at the Top at California Grill is tough. They are both absolutely delicious and the experience at both places is super cool. We've done both on a number of occasions and have never had a bad time. There is more food at Brunch as you can keep going back for more at the buffet line and there's always the BOTTOMLESS MIMOSAS! @bee has enjoyed a few of those, if I recall. The ambiance with the live music is delightful and the views are stunning in the sunshine! But dinner at Narcoossee's is an amazing experience out on the water with a beautiful view of its own. I've enjoyed pork chops and scallops and even lobster there and it's so good. If you hang around long enough you can see HEA from outside on the pier as well.

I think you'll get more value at Narcoossee's as the price tag for Brunch is not for the faint of heart. I just read @Tuvalu 's report about brunch at 1900 Park Place and that was $36 per person. Last time we went to CG it $80 per person. (I guess you gotta pay for those "free mimosas" somehow, huh?)

The Disney Visa Rewards card is paying for OUR brunch in FOUR DAYS!! You won't go wrong with either choice, but both in one day would be a LOT!! I'm excited to see what you choose to do! I'm sorry I'll miss you this year. :geek:

Thanks for the tag, @dizfan917!

I did indeed enjoy brunch at California Grill a few months ago. For my wife and me it was a spectacular experience worth repeating for a special occasion. However, a huge part of the appeal for us was the mimosas, and we would NOT pay for the brunch if we were only going to have one or two. We also used our Tables in Wonderland discount so we "only" paid $64 per person and not $80. I'm not sure how many drinks you intend to consume with your children present (no judgment if the answer is "LOTS," haha) but I'm not sure you'll get your money's worth. That said, it was a ton of food and we left absolutely stuffed AND with a box of desserts to enjoy later.

I think with the timing of your day you'll enjoy dinner better. I would definitely not want to have any pressing plans until at least four hours after my brunch time.
