Yeah, that is one thing this project has going for it. He is a notorious perfectionist and simply won't except just anything being built. I have only watched Avatar once and have no real interest in seeing it again. Did it have some amazing set pieces, yeah but it simply does not have the storytelling and myth making that Star Wars, HP and LOTR has. This land will live or die by how amazing the main attraction is. If it is a blockbuster than everything else will be icing on the cake. But if Disney thinks that they are gonna sell the same amount of merchandise and food and beverage as gets sold at WWOHP they are out of their freaking minds. People on this board get so hung up on attendance but besides stealing a day or two away and effecting WDW occupancy rates UNI is kicking WDW in per guest spending and it is because of WWOHP and it helps that they have that whole entertainment complex for people to have dinner and party at after they are done with the parks for the day.
You know WDW should build one of those.:D

Comparing the lasting power of the story of Avatar as it is today to the stories of Star Wars and LOTR is like comparing a pebble to a rock quarry. If you want to compare them this way you need to wait until the Avatar story is done being told.

Also, I don't look at the E as Soarin 2.0. The layout is reminding me of some descriptions I've heard for Iron Man at DL. Could they be using the same system? Perhaps.

To me, this is the first clue that the DL Iron Man thing is a screen/simulator type of attraction.

So if anybody is still reading this thread 6 pages later, let's recap. There was a huge, surprise announcement that a land based on the Avatar movie franchise would be built in the Animal Kingdom Park, followed by insiders claiming that they heard rumors of this prior to the announcement but didn't believe them and that despite the Disney announcement, the area wasn't really going to be built.

Now we get an announcement that plans are moving forward.

So, what did we learn here?
James Cameron rules over all!

Until dirt is being moved and concrete and steel are going up plans will always be changing. And until that happens nothing is guaranteed.

Couple of points of the top of my head...

1. If the attractions described on wdwfanboys.com are correct, I think it sounds decent enough. I agree with others that the execution is key with the Soarin' attraction and I think there's the potential for that to be very impressive especially with Cameron on board and especially if the tech is innovative and being used for Iron Man and in China.

2. I actually like the idea of a moderate C type attraction on a track/boat. I may sound like a broken record, but it is important for Disney to have rides that are accessible to all people -- different ages and thrill tolerance. DAK actually has a relatively high percentage of rides that are "thrilling" and even the everyone-can-ride safari is kinda rough. The initial rumored plans for the motorbike coaster and Soarin' meant the potential for only a walk through as the only attraction accessible to all. I like the idea of having an all ages rides better.

3. I trust Cameron and his vision. As long as he's involved, I think it will be a good show. At a reduced budget that probably means less stuff (hence, only two attractions) but I've got to think that we'd be pleased with the results.

4. DAK needs more and Pandora is the only thing on the radar. So, I'm glad it's (hopefully) being built even if others have reservations. I'm cautiously optimistic that if it's only two attractions that it means a smaller footprint and thus the potential space for other attractions down the road, perhaps not related to Pandora.

4a. I still think a simple, relatively small land dedicated to the cartoon critters of Disney makes perfect sense for DAK. Slap in some Jungle Book, Bambi, Pocahontas, Tarzan, Lady and the Tramp, Aristocats, 101 Dalmatians, etc. Sort of a Fantasyland for animals.

5. If the motorbikes are off the table, the possible upside is that they may find themselves at WDW as a direct clone in a Tron theme. I know we've speculated that they could be placed in Tomorrowland (replacing Laugh Floor or the Speedway). IMHO, there's zero chance they'd have two versions of the ride in WDW so not being in Pandora doesn't mean that it can't happen in WDW at all.

That the "insiders" are full of it. I remember someone saying this wouldn't happen for a fact and argued with someone named the "Raven" over it. Gosh I just love "sources" that are full of pretention and change their tunes when it's advantageous to do so.
Dude. Everyone knows things change every day. The project was stagnant. Something broke (looks to me like Cameron saying ok to a smaller budget) and that allowed the flood gates to open. It's Disney. Again, plans are always fluid. I've now seen the plans. They are legit. But that doesn't mean I don't know it could all change tomorrow. If ever there was a fickle company, it's Disney. I'd think you'd have realized that by now. It's how the game is played. Universal...now they are another story. They approve and follow thru. But until I see beams in the ground at DAK, there is always going to be a shadow of a doubt.

Saying a plan is stagnant and might not happen doesn't negate a lack of insider information...plans always have that 50-50 split of happening and not happening. Thanks, Bubbles, you responded before I could so I thought I'd echo your sentiments a bit ;)

Quick question that is semi-related to Pandora at DAK: does anyone know if they is talk about increasing the hours at DAK and/or adding a nighttime show? I would think that adding Pandora could bring about the critical mass of non-animal dependent attractions to justify later hours, so I wonder if a night show would be in the works as well. More specifically, that lower left part of DAK would be a sensible place for a show given that it is relatively isolated from the animals and has room to accommodate a lot of people if they wanted to build a Fantasmic like theater. Or maybe they'd just do something over the rivers around Discovery Island.

Is there any rumors like this?

I am still not one 100 percent show it will be built because of what happened with Hyperion Warf and other stuff that was green light in the past. If does happen, having 2 additional attractions would make the claim calling AK a half day park less accurate. I am happy that Cameron have given the ok, but I question if the quality of the land because there would 2 attractions not 3 due to the budget cut.

The question is would it be enough a person to stay at AK at night if night hours are increased.
