Hi Rodrigo!

Who won the elections? How was the day?

Hey Maria!

The elections were a mess... A LOT of places had delays because the eletronic thingies broke down, and people got confused because there were 6 votes to be made... But we're having "segundo turno", Lula and Serra. He almost got it on the first one, 47%. So there I go to work another Sunday, the 27th.

Awwweee... sorry to hear...

Why do you have to work for the elections? Were you "insaculated" (I don´t know if that word exists, but it means that you were chosen by your bday month or something like that, like here).

They tend to get people when they first have their "election titles" (the document that allows you to vote) issued. That's what happened with me. They send a letter to your house, kinda like Jury Duty in the US. So if you never answer the letter it's like you never got it. Well, I was dumb enough to answer it the first and second times. This year they sent it to my old building, so I was like "great, I moved, they'll never find me again". But I needed a document for college and when I went there they were like "hey, you've worked the elections before, right? We have a letter for you, sign here!" :hammer: But since I've worked more than 2 times (this is the 3rd), I can already be excused. Last time, 2000, I fogot to go there and enter the request. This year Julia already said she won't let me forget...

They pick you out here by the month of your bday. They send you a letter telling you where to register, but it is voluntary. Of course, this is from the list of the voters with a voting card (you are a nobody if you don´t have one so as soon as you turn 18 you rush to get one).
I think I was "insaculated" once but I didn´t register... You have to take a trainning and I never got to go. Sometimes elections are not very pleasant at some of the voting places (casillas) and I was too young and didn´t feel like risking myself.

Two years ago I was an "observer": people with supposedly no preference for any party that observe that election runs smoothly. It was fun, and thank God, the casillas that I visited were peaceful and in order. Last year, I had my trip to Europe already booked when I realized I was going to be away for the elections, so I was part of the "absentism".... shame on me...

My dad is an attorney and a notary and he has to stay in his office on election day all day just in case a problem occurs and he has to go an notarize it. We pray that they never call him! He has gone to some casillas in the past to notarize the problem, but always with another attorney and thank God without too many problems.
