News California indoor Mask Mandate is lifted

Just to be clear the Holiday Bowl was cancelled due to an outbreak of COVID among the UCLA defensive players. They didn't have enough defensive players to field a team. The game was cancelled because of the COVID protocols enforced by the NCAA not California, UCLA, or even the UC system.

Also note there were other canceled games because of COVID, Friday’s Hawaii Bowl (because of Hawaii), Monday’s Military Bowl (Boston College), Wednesday’s Fenway Bowl (Virginia) and this week’s Arizona Bowl (Boise State). Texas A&M had to withdraw from Friday’s Gator Bowl because of COVID issues.

So lets not make this a "California" thing, it was across a lot of the Bowl games in many other states.

That it was cancelled four (4) hours before kickoff is the cause of the anger.

These college football players are all vaccinated against Covid and are healthy young men, who often play bowl games with STD's and other sundry diseases. ;)

You don't cancel a bowl game four hours before kickoff with 25,000 fans who flew cross country for the game and live to tell about it. The NC State fans are furious at the UC system. Trust me, my phone almost melted from the salty texts. 🤣

To calm the anger, I called the Valley Farm Market south of town and they are delivering a gift basket of wines and a catered dinner to the beach house in about an hour. It's the very least I can do as a Californian for my out of state guests who have been treated so badly by UCLA and their administrators. 😇

I understand the anger as I would be angry too if an event I was attending, even if just across town, was cancelled only a couple hours before it was to start. However the NCAA has COVID protocols about isolating players who test positive for COVID, they aren't allowed to play no matter if you think they are healthy or not. Which is the real reason the game was cancelled, just like a bunch of other games across the country were cancelled for the same reason. UCLA didn't have enough players to play the game because of those NCAA COVID protocols.

This has NOTHING to do with the game being in California.

Yeah, again, tell that to the NC State fans who just spent a bunch of money to fly here.

And the UCLA teams busy past three days partying in San Diego isn't going over well. Here's a photo of the UCLA football team "following Covid protocols" by going maskless at Sea World two days ago. Posted by the UCLA Football official media account.

Let's face it, this is Covid health theater at its absolute worst. A bunch of 20 year old athletes who are fully vaccinated and as healthy as astronauts are not a problem. It's the bureaucrats and UCLA administrators that send them to Sea World and out partying in San Diego for days and then cancel the bowl game four hours before kickoff that are the problem. 🤣

Not all those players were vaccinated. They are tested up until game time, if they test positive they can't play. And that is exactly what happened. They had too many players testing positive in the hours before the game, so didn't have enough players to field a team. Its as simple as that. It doesn't matter if you personally think its all health theater or not. The NFL also has had the same problem in the last couple weeks, too many players testing positive, causing games to have to be postponed.

Not all those players were vaccinated.

To attend UCLA as a student you must be vaccinated. To work on the UCLA campus as a faculty member or employee you must be vaccinated. Even the general public, if they want to attend a football game at the Rose Bowl or a lecture or any indoor event on the UCLA campus they must show proof of vaccination to enter, per the County of Los Angeles requirements for the past two months.

According to the LA Times "98% of UCLA football players are vaccinated", which boggles the mind that 2% were allowed to be unvaccinated when a guy selling pretzels has to be vaccinated to work at the Rose Bowl.

Who are the 2% of the football team who aren't vaccinated? None of that adds up.

I'm just telling you the fact man, you don't think it adds up well then go talk to Chip Kelly.

A few random thoughts on masks, from a maskless state...

The kids in the family organized a Christmas vacation in Arizona in an Airbnb complex in a mountain resort town. Heavenly! Not a mask to be seen anywhere, everyone just wandering around vaccinated and healthy and happy.

Went to a steakhouse last night for dinner, the place was packed. No masks on any employee. It looked so... normal.

With the exception of 2 months this summer we’ve had mask mandates in NV for almost two years now, I went to Utah for Christmas and cant describe how nice it felt to feel normal again.

I’ve lived in Nevada for 20 years and had been feeling a little restless but my desire to move has kicked into overdrive this last year. There’s a growing sense of hopelessness that the state leadership will never let things return to normal here.

For what it's worth, I work at a hotel in Utah, and haven't had to wear a mask in months.

We had a ton of travelers from CA for the holidays. And there were a few who commented/complained that the staff wasn't wearing masks.

I'm like... you drove across multiple states to visit extended family, if you're that worried about the rona stay home.

You’d think they’d have looked at Utahs rules ahead of time. I’ve been to Florida, CA, Hawaii, and Utah this year… I always look at each states Covid rules so I know what to expect.

Can I ask, was it the Second Sky Festival? I was gonna say, because the Collesium at least has the room to move around and avoid people if/ when needed.
Yes it was! I had plenty of room when I wasn't in the like actual crowd, I watched the first 5 sets from the grassy area with my gf just sitting down relaxing, moved into the actual crowd right before Jai Wolf's set to be there for Madeon and Porter. Were you there or did you just hear about the event?

I will say there was a little more space around me even in the actual crowd area, usually people are pretty shoulder to shoulder but here I had a little bubble around me, obviously that doesn't make much of a difference COVID wise but it made the experience very comfortable compared to other shows I've been to.

I'm not sure about the original venue if it was a larger or smaller space but I felt everything was spaced out properly, even with massive lines at merch / food locations there was room to get around everywhere without feeling claustrophobic.

My sister and brother-in-law traveled in Europe for three months without problems. They have shots and boosters. They went to a party in Sacamento. In a garage with 46 folks. 26 got covid, including sis and b-in-law. They tested positive 10 days ago and continue to feel crummy. Messed with the family's Christmas get together in Palm Springs.

We had plans for a small group new years party. Unfortunately the host family had an exposure so we had to call it all off. I thought delta was bad, but this is all starting to hit too close.

I'm just telling you the fact man, you don't think it adds up well then go talk to Chip Kelly.

My friends from Raleigh and their extended family are all back home in North Carolina now. The thousands of NC State fans who flew cross-country to the game (some of whom probably had to stretch some budgets to pull that off) are blaming UCLA and "nutty California". Whether we like it or not.

Their anger stems from the complete hypocrisy and bizarre rule bending lifestyle that UCLA and California leaders seem to have. Here's a video of a UCLA pep rally at Petco Park the night before the game, about 18 hours before it was cancelled suddenly just before kickoff. Hundreds of UCLA students packed together, maskless, blowing dangerously into wind instruments no less! Miniskirted and maskless cheerleaders not physical distancing as they do their cheers. Hundreds of fans packed together maskless, many of whom are team staff or parents and girlfriends and buddies of the players themselves. An official UCLA sanctioned event less than a day before kickoff.

So.... yeah. The folks from North Carolina think us Californians are a bunch of crazy and idiotic hypocrites. They appear to be correct in that assesment. 🤣

A reminder, the COVID-19 rules for wind instruments from the California Department of Public Health... 🥳
  • Instrumental music is allowed as long as the musicians maintain at least 6-foot physical distancing. Playing of wind instruments (any instrument played by the mouth, such as a trumpet or clarinet) is strongly discouraged.
And the rules for shouting, chanting, singing from the California Department of Public Health...
  • Singing, chanting, shouting, and physical exertion significantly increases the risk of COVID-19 transmission because these activities increase the release of respiratory droplets and fine aerosols into the air. Because of this, singing, chanting, and shouting are strongly discouraged, but if they occur, the following rules and recommendations apply:
    • All people who are singing or chanting should wear a face covering at all times while singing or chanting, including anyone who is leading a song or chant. Because these activities pose a very high risk of COVID-19 transmission, face coverings are essential to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets and fine aerosols;
    • People who are singing, shouting, chanting, or exercising are strongly encouraged to maintain physical distancing beyond 6 feet to further reduce risk.
    • People who are singing or chanting are strongly encouraged to do so quietly (at or below the volume of a normal speaking voice).

And a total of 5 bowl games were cancelled across this country due to COVID, only one of those was in California. Let me check my math..... But that means that 80% of all bowl games cancelled occurred outside of California and the CDPH jurisdiction.

So your friends and other Tar Heel fans can be angry at California, the UCLA, UC System, or anything else they want to blame all they want, but the fact still remains this wasn't some wacky nutty California thing. Its college kids breaking the COVID rules at various colleges campuses across this country including Virginia State and Texas A&M. So it shouldn't be surprising.

FYI, the Tar Heels are the University of North Carolina. NC State, the Wolfpack, went to the Holiday Bowl.

That it was all cancelled about four hours before kickoff was the issue. Less than 24 hours after UCLA hosted a big maskless pep rally (with dangerous wind instruments and illegal chanting!) and just days after the UCLA football team went maskless at Sea World and tours to the USS Midway and partying in the Gaslamp with young ladies (giving the gals the benefit of the doubt).

If the UCLA leadership was truly that scared of the Covid virus, they would not have allowed the players to party it up for days beforehand and would have not hosted team events that clearly violated California Department of Public Health rules on Covid.

It was almost as if....

UCLA wanted the kids to catch a little Covid in order to cancel the game at the last second. ;)

Bottom line it wasn't the only game cancelled. Yes it sucks, but all the games cancelled weren't done weeks in advance, most were just the a day or two ahead of the game. Meaning that ALL travelers to those games were in the same boat as your friends.

So ONCE AGAIN, this isn't some wacky nutty California thing.

But you go ahead and keep trying to push this as something that only happens here in California. When it even happened in some very conservative states and schools, such as Idaho, Arizona, and Texas.

Who are not states full of hypocrites like California is.

The open hypocrisy and bizarre Karen-esque rule shaming of Californians is what set the NC State fans off.

The friends from Raleigh are back home, all safe and sound. No plans to return to California anytime soon. Living in a state with no statewide mask mandate and elected leaders who are not hypocrites on Covid.

Luckily, my friends and their extended family have a travel budget that could take that hit. Many other NC State fans are not so lucky, and stretched some budgets to afford the trip. NC State has the highest Black student enrollment aside from an HBCU school. Many of the students have parents that are working class, often the first person in the family to attend college, and a trip to San Diego to see their child perform in the band or football team was a very big deal for them. At least two days notice of the bowl cancellation would have been appropriate.

But if you are going to hinge an entire bowl game on last-second Covid tests of very healthy young people who aren't impacted by Covid, then perhaps don't host maskless SuperSpreader events like this the day before the game... Chanting! Cheering! Wind instruments! 😱

And what about all the other teams and fans that spent a lot more money for games they couldn't attend for the same reason. Like Memphis fans flying to Hawaii, which is a WHOLE lot more expensive then your friends flying to California from NC. BTW, Hawaii has continued to have some of the most restrictive COVID restrictions during the whole pandemic.

Sorry, while it sucks, NC fans weren't the only fans who lost out.

I don't know anyone in Memphis. And I don't have a beach house in Hawaii they could use, even if I did know people from Memphis.

I'm just talking about my old friends who used my beach house in La Jolla. They now have firsthand experience that's convinced them Californians are hypocritical nutjobs. 🤣

And the way UCLA leadership handled the three days of pre-game events is proof of that. See the photos and videos above of maskless and non-socially distanced behavior condoned, hosted and arranged by the UCLA leadership.

Back from a night carousing in the Gaslamp after the big pep rally? Great, now take a Covid test!
