California Grill closing January 2013

We’re so excited about enhancements to the interactive kitchen

Please don't. Just close the kitchen off. We were in the back corner by the kitchen last time and I was ready to punch the expeditor in the face. Exactly what I want when I'm spending over $100 for dinner, someone shouting out food orders throughout my meal. Beyond irritating. I just don't get who enjoys seeing them cook. It's outdated and lame.

I just went back and looked, and the McDonalds/Pollo Campero changeover took about 6 months...though that was in the middle of pedestrian traffic. Seems to me that if they have the design and the new furnishings ready to go, it'd be quicker than that. I've seen a 2000 sqft house build from dirt to closing in 3 months.

But, maybe that's what it takes. Just seems one of the most popular restaurants in the resort would have the least downtime as possible, so it makes me wonder if maybe it is more than just new furnishings and a menu. Not anything next gen or anything, but maybe rearranging the layout for tiered views or something.
Was this 2000 sqft house on the 15th floor of a hotel?

Ate at the CG last month. Our waiter mentioned this exact project as our meal was winding down - cool to see that his info was accurate. He mentioned that the refurb was part of a larger project that involved the replacement of the Tower roof (the whole thing) in addition to refurbishment or at least temporary closure of rooms on the 12th and 14th floors.

Not sure how true the roof/room refurbishment parts of his story are - but just food ($30 sushi?) for thought.

This was supposed to originally happen over late 2006 early 2007 ... was then going to be done in time for BLT ... and now it is just being planned for 2013.

yep, this is Disney ...

I hope when it reopens the food remains wonderful, but they remove it from the DDP so all the rubes that aren't used to fine dining will stop coming with their brats and demand dumbed down cuisine.

Out of curiosity, do you think the food at Cali Grill is currently wonderful? I think I'm a bit more "optimistic" (for lack of a better term) about WDW dining than you, but I'll admit that I think Cali Grill is a bit of a letdown compared to other signature restaurants, although I do still like it.

Jiko, Yachtsman Steakhouse (another dated restaurant), Sanaa (not Signature), The Wave (also not Signature), Bistro de Paris, and Flying Fish are all better, in my opinion. And those are just the restaurants that quickly come to mind.

Glad to see this happening. For those upset that they won't be able to eat at Cali Grill...it's a needed update and there are dozens of other comparable restaurants at WDW.

I'm glad it's being refurbished. The decor is out of date and the menu is TIRED. Sure they had a few different options here and there, but for the most part it hasn't changed in years. Unrelated, but I was there last week and it was so cold they were handing out table cloths to patrons so they wouldn't freeze!

At least bring back access to the SW observation deck. How long did the transition from Top of the World take? That was a total gut job for sure.

One question I've always had, why not try a breakfast up there, they could get $30 ea for scrambled eggs for the view...or do they use it a lot for banquets?

I believe it was closed for about a year and it was the first and only gut job of the facility.

I used to love Top of the World for Sunday brunch. We did it MANY times when I was a wee Spirit. Great food. Great views. Classy environment. No need for reservations (or at most the day before). No characters. Just wonderful. Back when WDW was a very different (better? damn straight) product.

When CG opened in 1995 they served lunch for a short period (6-10 months) before it was decreed by someone in Food and Beverage that no 'fine dining' locale could be open for anything but dinner. The thinking was it made it more desirable. Forget about all the money they lost, even with lower price points (yes, Disney used to be like the real world and you didn't pay dinner prices for lunch!)

Can't talk about currently, Tom. I haven't been there since 2009. It's become near impossible to get in when I want without dining at an uncomfortable time or calling in a favor. It's just become not worth it especially when I see my $25 filet is now $45 (sorry Mickey, inflation ain't that bad!) ... I will say that from 1995 to my last visit, CG was consistently the best food and service of the WDW fine (now 'signature') dining locales. It was a place I always went to and had special ocassion dinners etc. I do recall my last 2-3 meals being great, but being bothered by what I can only term a lower element clientele ... i.e. folks coming in dressed like they went from riding Splash Mountain to CG and folks on the DDP who all wanted 'the steak plain, none of that fancy sauce on it and no veggies, we want fries!'' (BTW, that is almost a word for word quote from my last visit).

That's the problem with the DDP. People who (should I say this nicely or provocatively, so some will tune me out and not listen and think ... yeah, he's right ... hmm... I say it's the Fourth, so celebrate freedom by going the scortch and burn way) have no business dining at a place like CG are, and they are ruining it for those of us who want more than beef and taters.

Again, though, my experiences always placed CG as the best WDW experience (tied with Bistro de Paris and Jiko when it first opened) except for V&A's and that is a very special place that you don't go to every visit unless you are a foodie and one with loads of $$$.

I like all the places you mention except for The Wave. I find it boring with small portions that have left me hungry and I feel it is pricey, even when dining at 40% off, for what you get.

I love Bistro, but have read it is now included on the DDP so that means it will no longer be EPCOT's best-kept secret and likely means more rubes with brats.

Sanaa I really enjoy ... been four times, but last time had a bit of a food and service issue and haven't been back, although I'll always give a place a second chance especially after all the great experiences.

Flying Fish ... it's been so many years since I've been that I can't comment either. I've always had great meals there too, but everything has changed with the DDP (hey, let's all go to the Coral Reef for Pork Chops ... or why not have a $50 pizza at EPCOT?)

OK, I ranted ... but I am hungry for pizza and it's too late to get one ... but did I answer your question?

In my opinion CG suffers from being an event location. People go there for the fireworks, not so much for the food.

I have eaten at CG for the last five years on my annual trips and my experience has varied a lot. I finally came to the conclusion that it is a wonderful restaurant if you go there early - I love being there when it opens, but becomes more mediocre when you are there during the fireworks. I have had years when I thought it was the best dining experience of the trip (and I usually have meals at a few signature restaurants during the trip) and then other years when I was not impressed and Jiko and Flying Fish were much better. However, last year CG once again managed to get the top spot.

What do people get at Sanaa? I had the Short Ribs and I was underwhelmed.

Maybe I'm just not particularly keen on what a modern, up-to-date restaurant should look like and serve, but nothing about the California Grill seemed outdated to me. The highlight for me, though, is walking out onto the roof, which could maybe look a little nicer.

Heading for the great escape.
Should be open by the time we go, but theres alternatives if it isnt. My opinion is that the CG, Artists Point and Jikos are all equally good, or they were 12 months ago.

Hope i can still wear my vest and flip flops

We will be eating there on Jan 1st, 2013. Glad we snuck in before they shut it down. Always start vacation with dinner and wishes (tear). Food has remained great, decor hasn't been a bother, though I really like the back room. In fact, I thought it was supposed to look like that for a reason (oh well, shows you what I know). Service is never less than great, food and wine has never disappointed and despite the fact that it is a WDW restaurant there are always some really well groomed and attractive couples and families eating around us. I know we dress appropriately and that may be one of the reasons we have had such excellent service over the years whether we are four or 14.
