Buckling up

I've noticed a lot of "Click it or Ticket" ads lately. I've always wondered. What is so hard about buckling your seat belt? Why do so many people refuse to do it? It's not hard to do. It doesn't take long. It's just *click* and you're done. It takes longer to stick your keys in the ignition and start your car then it does to buckle your seat belt. And after a while of doing it, it basically becomes automatic. Like when I get in a car, the first thing I reach for is the seat belt. What's so hard about it that people won't wear them? I know a lot of people who don't wear them. One of my friends deliberately refuses to wear one. He gets mad when he gets in my new car and it senses he's not wearing it and yells at him. Several members of my family don't wear them. What's the deal? Is it just not "cool" to wear a seat belt? "Ooooooh, look at me, I'm not wearing a seat belt, I'm such a rebel!" I don't get it. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

It saves your life, wearing one can be the thin line between life and death..

It all comes down to developing a routine of not putting it on.. And being lazy.

Long live LIFE STRAPS.

Some people just don't understand. I refuse to move my car if the seatbelts are not locked. They do save lives and it is the law here to wear them.

I always buckle my seatbelt. Nanny doesn't drive off unless everyone is wearing a seatbelt. My 10 year old cousin yells at her dad when he doesn't put his seatbelt on and gets him in trouble  My aunt Dolores' Toyota yells at people too when they don't buckle up. My aunt Bonnie likes to wait till it goes crazy just to get a laugh. its amazing what amuses my family and I  In my car, seatbelts are worn or the car doesn't go. my rules :D

I think the main reason here is comfort. I will admit to not wearing a seat belt some times, and the reason is comfort. Although I don't wear it sometime, I wear it 95% of the time, and every time with new drivers or people I've never been in a car with. On long road trips if I'm able to lay down in the back of the car I don't put my seat belt on and just lay down.

It may just be my generation that doesn't do it. Ask any kid if they buckle their seat belt on the school bus. Almost all of them will say that they don't.

I won't even rive a block without buckling up.

Some people feel trapped, and refuse to wear one in case they need to make a fast exit.

Other people feel it is not important to wear one in the back seat. Friends of mine were in an accident when we were in high chool, and the girl in back was not buckled up. She flew forward into my other friend's seat, and broke the girl's back. How's you like to live with that the rest of your life? Nobody thinks of those things. But they do happen.

Buckle up!

That's my policy as well. My car doesn't move if one person doesn't have their seatbelt on in my car. I don't even think about putting it on when I get in my car. I do it before I put the keys in or I do it at the same time.

As far as the "Click it or ticket" campaign, I've noticed a lot of it lately as well. They usually do it during holidays. My office has that written on our sign out by the road.

Also, Melissa and I noticed A LOT of undercover and non-undercover state cop cars out today. I bet I saw 6 of them within 5 minutes all with someone pulled over. I love seeing them pulling people over for seat belt violations. I never knew it was that difficult to take 2 seconds out of your life before driving to put that one.

And rememeber everyone, SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES! So....CLICK IT OR TICKET! (And I've known people that were younger than 16 get $75 tickets for not having theirs on. It's not just the driver that needs to wear one!)

The "Click It or Ticket" is a Federal Highway Safety Campaign. Local police departments get $$ to enforce local seat belt laws. I'm guessing that they have to also put a sign out to make people aware of the enforcement and to try and get people to wear their seatbelt.

I always wear mine as well. During my senior year in high school, the NJ State Police brought this thing called "The Convincer" to our school. Everyone who was taking driver's ed had to at least see what it was. They strapped you into a car seat with a seatbelt, and then let the seat 'roll' down a small incline that comes to a sudden stop. It simulated the sudden stop of hitting something (or having at accident) at 10 mph. WOW! Talk about a true statement...convincing you to wear a seatbelt!

I think that there are two reasons that people don't want to wear a seatbelt. One (as someone said) is that they feel that they would not be able to get out of their vehicle if they were in a bad accident. They also feel that 'getting thrown clear of the vehicle is safer than being in the car during an accident.'

Also, many people resent having a law that requires them to buckle up. They feel that it's "too much government."

While I tend to agree with that issue, I still think it's a good idea to wear your seatbelt. My feeling is that if you choose NOT to wear your seatbelt, then please make sure you have checked YES on your organ donor card.

Same goes with helmet laws for motocycles. If you choose not to wear a helmet, then MY health insurance rates should NOT increase to pay for the extra-ordinary means keep you alive because of your severe head trauma.

I think everybody should read this website thoughly. Watch the video. Read the facts.
http://www.thinkseatbelts.com

Over here it has been law for years and years. It is second nature for me to put it on. Even before the keys go in the ignition.

A few facts taken from the above website (but please still visit):
* There have been huge advances in seatbelt design since 1983. Upper anchorage point adjusters for comfort are standard in most vehicles; many seatbelts are integrated into saftey systems and work with pre-tensioners.

* Airbags are common in modern vehicles; they are designed to work with seatbelts - NOT instead of them

* Pregnant women are not exempt from wearing a seatbelt. In an accident, a belt could save the lives of both the mother and the unborn child

* Without a seathbelt, in a crash at 30MPH you will be thrown forward with a force of between 30 and 60 times your body weight. Seatbelts significanlty reduce this force, and consequently the risj of injury or death.

It's force of habit for me. In fact, I feel naked if I don't have the seatbelt on.

Personally, I don't consider "comfort" an excuse not to wear one. Surviving a crash sounds a LOT more comfortable than lying in a hospital on life support, or worse yet, in a coffin.

Long story short: In 1986 I was involved in an accident where my brother was driving on wet pavement and he lost control of the car we were driving in. We crashed head on with a car driving in the opposite direction. Neither one of us was wearing seatbelts (I thought they were not necessary at that time). By the grace of God (I believe) we were not seriously injured. I to this day am amazed that I did not propel through the windshield (I was in the passenger seat). From that day forward I have always used my seatbelt. I believe I was given a second chance to do the right thing (wear a seatbelt). Luckly, my brother was not injured seriously either. EVERYONE should always wear their seatbelt, even if they are only 5 minutes from home. We were less than ten minutes away from our house!

One of my friends is diabetic and was driving home after school one day and had an attack-type-seizure thing. She lost control of the car, hit two others, ran into a ditch, and flipped a couple of times. The car landed upside down and they had to pull her out of it with the Jaws of Life.

If she wasn't wearing her seat belt, she would have DEFINITELY died. Instead, she came out with hardly any bruises and only a rash on her neck.

Ironically, the rash was from the seat belt.

I think we should all listen to Mickey on the sign leaving WDW and "Up Buckle."

I always wear my seatbelt and I don't drive unless everyone has theres on. And I never exceed the limit of my car and I never make people double up on seatbelts. I get made "fun of" for this at school, especially when we go out to parties... but its my policy. You don't want to be safe, get the hell outta my car...

Driving safely is important to you and to everyone on the road with you. To me driving is a privelege and can be taken away as easy as it was gained... and it's also important to me. I like having that amount of freedom and wouldn't risk it for anything.

Last year the grade twelves graduated and had a camping trip and I lost a dear friend of my mine, John Stevens (1986-2004 R.I.P) on that trip. He was in the back of a car when his friend crashed into a tree, killing everyone but one person in the car. Tomorrow I myself will set off for that exact SAME trip, and it is with HIM that I remain safe and it is with HIM in my mind that I will remind everyone to buckle up, even if it's not cool.

For all you graduates out there like me... I don't care if its from High school or Law school or whatever... please be safe. Don't drink and drive. Your life has just begun... enjoy it, but safely.

FutureCEO- it's not just your choice it is the LAW (at least here in Texas it is)
(I'm not trying to start anything or be mean, just wanted to point that out...)

Anyway, It's automatic for me to buckle up and my rule for my DD is if I don't hear a "click" (of the seatbelt) the car doesn't move- she knows when I say, "I didn't hear a click" to put on her seat belt. Now the people I really don't get are those parents who don't buckle up their kids- I have seen kids standing up in cars and just not secured at all.....Not a good idea for many reasons....

I'll admit that I'm one of the filthy degenerates that doesn't always wear my seat-belt (and I had a $200 ticket turned into a $240 ticket for it a few weeks ago).

I don't have any good reason not to, I just never got in the habit of doing it all the time.
