Botched 6 flags promotion

I realize this has nothing to do with Disney and this is totally the wrong forum for this, but I have seen alot of people on these boards bash other theme park companies such as 6 Flags and I think alot of people will find this kinda funny. Some people say that there is no such this as bad publicity but I don't think 6 flags had this in mind when they came up with this idea.
I live in Atlanta and our local 6 flags park partnered up with a local radio station for a free promotion yesterday. It is spring break for most places in the Atlanta area and they thought it might be nice of them to offer free admission to people who entered the park between 6AM and 9AM. They were only expecting a few thousand people but by 615AM they had to shut the gates and turn people around because the park was already full and chaos ensued. I realize that Disney parks get full sometimes as well and people do get turned away occasionally, but atleast Disney has plans in place to deal with those situations.

What did they really expect to happen? Could you imagine Disney offering a free admission day and the chaos it would cause?

I don't think even free admission could get me to a Six Flags though...

I wouldn't go to Six Flags even if it was free.

It is the closest themepark to me (the one in NJ), and so a lot of people around here will go there. They will ask me to go and I always decline, and then they say, "Oh, well you've done/been to the real thing". So I guess Disney World is the "real thing".

Free admission to an amusement park in a major metropolitan city and they only expected a few thousand people...

I wouldn't go to a Six Flags park because I don't feel safe there. (I live in Boston so the closest one is Six Flags New England)...

The rides always seem like they are rundown and the people running the attractions (for the most part) aren't paying attention to what they are doing and just joking around with each other.

This would have been funny had it not managed to screw up the ENTIRE interstate at Rush HOUR! (IDIOTS) Not to mention the STUPID parents who let their kids walk down the interstate to get to the park where they were denied admission and were then STUCK! I am sorry, but what kind of parent would have done this... "Here Jr just hike down the Interstate"

I don't understand why so many here hate Six Flags so much. I love Six Flags. I try to go at least once a year; preferably more than once if funds allow. One year, we went to 4 different Six Flags. One in June, one in July, one in August and one in September...the Atlanta one, as a matter of fact. Sure, Six Flags has nothing compared to Disney, but IMO, there is no comparison. Disney is a vacation destination, whereas Six Flags is intended as a one day attraction. Take a day off on a nice summer day, round up some buddies and hit Six Flags, then come home that night. Sure, if you're a local, you can do that at Disney, too. But primarily, WDW is not intended as a one day attraction. So to me, WDW and Six Flags is like comparing apples to oranges.

I think I enjoyed the Atlanta Six Flags more than the other three that I have visited. Beautiful park, good layout, good rides. But I must admit, this promotion doesn't sound like the brightest idea in the world. Maybe if it had a one hour window instead of a three hour window, it would have worked a little better, but on the other hand, maybe every one of those people would have been clogging up the interstate in that one hour instead of spreading out over three hours. So it may not be the brightest advertising ploy no matter how much time they allow.

Right. And during spring break too. Brilliant.

In the Chicago area, Six Flags is getting hammered because it's trying to boost alcohol sales. The spokescreature mentioned that Disney does the same thing. Which is true to some extent. But Disney doesn't attract hordes of punks.

That's not to say I wouldn't go to Six Flags. I just don't know anybody else who like rollercoasters as much as I do. Well, I do. But they're young and can't hold their liquor. Drinking + spinning rides = :hurl:

What dumb management, of course during spring break every kid NEAR there would want to go! They should have just told people who got there at 6 that they would get in free...word of mouth would have caused less hassle!

The Altanta Zoo profited from this seeing those extra people come to them after no being able to get into 6 flags. There was reported a 47% attendance increase yesterday from last year at the same date.

Yeah they did. So much so they are going to do the promotion again in the future, only this time they are going to add a few other stipulations, like limiting the number of guests.

By 7 a.m., Alyssa and her friends were trying to keep warm inside the QT convenience store, about a mile from the park. They had walked there after getting to the park and finding the gates closed.

"It's cold outside," Alyssa said. "They didn't tell people there was a maximum capacity."
