Oh, I totally agree that it's justified to ask whether the Fox purchase was a good idea. It even makes sense to question Disney's DtC strategy (being all-in on streaming).

But Disney is actually executing (successfully) on the plan Iger set in place and has been sticking to all along:
  • Purchase content/IP (with little concern for costs)
  • Create new content (with little concern for costs)
  • Put all that content on their streaming platforms
  • Build a huge subscriber base (free/low subscriptions) and establish market share over competitors
  • Reign in costs, raise subscription prices to achieve profitability
This proxy fight is just business scrappers, seeing Disney at its most vulnerable part of this plan, whipping up investors who:
  • Were never super excited about (or even understood) this plan to begin with
  • Are impatient about dividends
  • Spooked by predictions of a streaming bust and economic downturn
  • Are worried about the cultural direction of the company

Right. And the plan is working.

You might not agree with the plan, but he's been right about a lot:
  • The world of media is changing, and streaming is the future
  • Disney needed to buy content in order to stay competitive
  • Disney needed to throw all their content on streaming (no more Vault strategy) and spend BIG to attract enough subs
  • Only once the subscriber base is built up can they scale back on spending and raise prices to profitability

just think if Disney was still as creative as they once were... they wouldn't have needed to buy so much "other" stuff (or make all these live action remakes / reboots of previous films and bomb out with most of the new movies)

Yeah, I have a hard time thinking that WWE would be some disaster to the brand given how varied Disney's IPs are now. They range from Mickey to princesses to Deadpool to Family Guy and everything in between. Not to mention a successful film franchise with a retired WWE wrestler in Guardians of the Galaxy and having the Rock star in multiple movies, including one based on a fan-favorite theme park attraction.

There are the adamants - even today - that suggest remaking every movie for the last 80 years and running a $4 billion tent pole franchise profit behemoth into a ditch on purpose Were good ideas
