Merry Christmas to all!:lol:

Pardon me for getting a little deep here. I think we've gotten to the point that the real meaning of Christmas has been completely lost in the rush to get the best bargain and buy the biggest, showiest gifts possible, using commando tactics if necessary. Say thanks to our overly commericialized, materialistic society.

Do you think that any of the people involved in that remembered that the ultimate purpose of this madness is to celebrate the birth of Jesus? Doubt it.

Our family slept in this morning and just hung out at home to recover from our gluttony yesterday. We were much happier for doing so.

I have never nor will I ever do the whole Black Friday thing. We slept in, ate pie for breakfast, and packed for our FL trip next weekend. Life is good here in the slow lane! :lol:

INSANE. No price is worth that. I slept in and DH and I cuddled our son this morning. I gave up Black Friday years ago.

You know what I thought about doing? Getting a child from the angel tree for each person on my list. My gift to them would be that they gave a needy child Christmas. That emphasizes the meaning more than any other gift I can think of.

And that is one of the many reasons I don't do Black Friday. I saw pics of people camping out in tents on the sidewalk of Best Buy last night. Nothing is worth that to me. There will be plenty of more sales and deals to be had between now and Christmas (and after Christmas)...many of which will be just as good as the deals that people found today. Honestly, I think alot of people get suckered in by Black Friday and probably end up buying a bunch of stuff just because they think they are getting a deal...not because they really wanted to buy it. If they planned a gift list ahead of time and just shopped the regular sales and coupons during the month of December, they would probably find that they did not spend any more....probably less.

That being said, I do have friends who just like the atmosphere of Black Friday...they actually enjoy the crowds. To each his own!

I work retail and absolutely hate Black Friday.

Luckily I don't work at a big box store so I don't get to experience the extreme level of crazy, but I do have to deal with a fair amount of it.

It's sad but there are some years that I want the Christmas season to be over even before it begins...that's retail for you...

Today is "Shop Locally Day" where we are encouraged to shop at small neighborhood businesses. I've already gone to a couple of my favorite gift shops to pick up our yearly ornaments.

My children are beyond the Santa/toy stage, so I don't have to worry about trying to find a wish gift.

My husband & I use somewhat expensive items that we would have purchased anyway as our gifts.

I'll send gift baskets or flowers to some people, and my in-laws get donations to their favorite charities. We've reached an age where we have too much stuff, and really do believe that it's the thought that counts.

So, I really don't have to go to the malls, big box stores, etc this year - except to get a new tree stand after mine broke, after water leaked and damaged my hardwood floor last year.

try working at Macys on black friday, it was packed yesterday while i was at work

My mom owns her own small gift shop in my home town and I was so happy to hear of this "shop locally" movement. I haven't had a chance to talk to her today to see if she saw an increase in her business but I am keeping my fingers crossed that she did.

And I couldn't agree more with your sentiment regarding having too many things. I politely asked all of my family members to please refrain from buying me or my husband any gifts this year but instead if they wished, to please give to the charity of their choice. I have so many blessings in my life already and I honestly don't need a single thing so would much rather my family save their money for themselves. I have a ton of Christmas spirit this year and am really looking forward to just decorating and spending time with everyone. That is all I need this Holiday season.
