Birthday TR - 7/18-7/20

Several months ago, I decided I didn't quite want to face my 40th birthday in the usual way. I figured if I spent in the Happiest Place on Earth it would be easier to bear. And I really wanted to stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. I planned it all in less than 60 days and it turned out to be the best birthday ever.

Day 0

We had other commitments that meant we could fly down until late on the 17th. We didn't arrive at the airport until shortly after 10pm, but we did take advantage of Magical Express. This was the first time I'd used the service and it was fabulous. Even with making stops at a few other resorts first, we arrived at AKL by 11pm. I'd done the online check-in, but since we arrived so late in the day it didn't really matter as there was no one ahead of us when we arrived. However, all of the paperwork and keys were ready so it really was a very quick process. We made it to the room and went straight to sleep.

Next up: Day 1 - My Birthday at Magic Kingdom

But first, some photos of AKL

Day 1 - Magic Kingdom

My birthday started with a wonderful surprise! While we were getting ready, there was a knock on the door. When I opened it, I found this waiting for me on the other side:

My husband had arranged for it and completely surprised me! The "cake" that Mickey is holding consisted of chocolate bars forming an outer circle and the inside was filled with cookies, pretzels, gummy bears, jelly beans and squares of Ghiradelli chocolates!

After ooohing and aahing, we needed to head for the Kona Cafe for their famous Tonga Toast! Our ADRs were for 8am, though, and with the park not opening until 9am, we had to figure out how to get to Poly. I had asked for advice here a while ago and several people mentioned the Breakfast Bus. Sadly, I asked three different CMs and none of them knew anything about it. So, we took a cab over instead. With tip, it was $20.

But all of that was forgotten when we got to the Poly. One thing I noticed was how few people were waiting outside Ohana's and how empty the Kona Cafe was. Only one side of the restaurant was being used and there were only about 5 tables taken.

On the plus side, that meant our orders came up very quickly. I first had Tonga Toast 5 years ago and was disappointed when we weren't able to get to the Poly during our 2007 trip, so I was craving this pretty hard and it did not disappoint.

After washing down breakfast with a mimosa, the waitress brought over another surprise:

It was just dollops of whipped cream and a cream puff, but it was yummy!

Finally, we jumped on the monorail and arrived at MK just before opening. I went to Will Call to pick up the Birthday Fast Pass and we were through the tunnels within a minute of the rope drop.

Our first ride was BTMRR which had absolutely no line so after we finished the first ride we went right back on again. Next, we headed to Splash which also had a very short line.

We hit PotC, ETRUNM, HM, HoP, IASW, and Peter Pan all before lunch. We stopped at the Village Haus around noon for lunch. Lines were short and finding a table was not an issue. After lunch, we went on Buzz before we decided to head back to the resort for a swim.

We spent about 90 minutes in the pool, just relaxing. I thought the pool was very nice - large enough that it didn't feel crowded at all and three attentive lifeguards. The kids really enjoyed the slide as did quite a few grownups!

After quick showers, we headed back to MK for dinner. I'll mention here that I know that one of the biggest issues that people have with AKL is the bus wait. And while the drive from AKL to MK is a bit lengthy (20 min), most of the time we waited no longer than 5-10 minutes for buses.

Our dinner reservation was for Tony's. It's sort of become a tradition for us to have our first night's dinner there. The food was all very good and my husband and I split the pistachio creme brulee for dessert while my son declined dessert in order to introduce my sister to the joys of a Dole Whip.

At this point, we wanted to walk off some of our dinner so we went through the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse before taking the Jungle Cruise where the pilot had everyone wish me a Happy Birthday. And let me just add here how awesome it is to spend your birthday at WDW. So many CMs and other guests went out of their way just to say Happy Birthday. It was so much fun!

We made a few more stops (Pooh, the Laugh Floor and SGE) before we settled down on the Tomorrowland bridge for the fireworks. I had wanted to book the dessert party but it was already sold out when I called, however, we wouldn't have been able to eat $18 worth of desserts anyway at that point. Tinkerbell flew right over our heads and we had a perfectly framed viewed of Wishes. It was the perfect ending to a perfect Disney birthday.

Day 2 - DHS and DAK

DHS
We grabbed a quick breakfast at the Mara and headed for DHS, arriving about 15 minutes after opening.

We headed straight to TSM where FPs were going like hotcakes. We grabbed some but then went to the standby line as the posted wait time was 30 minutes. In fact, it turned out to be only about 15 minutes. We were lucky enough to be at Disneyland on the Opening Day of it's version and I have to say this queue is MUCH nicer. It's inside, for one, and much more design/things to look at.

Next we went to RnRC where the actual time (20 minutes) was again less than the posted wait time. After that, we went standby on ToT (less than 30 minute wait). We were able to grab more FPs for RnRR before heading back to TSM to use our earlier FPs. We decided to hit Star Tours, which was a complete walk on.

At this point, I was really surprised at how empty the park was for a summer Sunday. After we used our RnRC FPs, I took a chance and checked to see if we could get into 50's Prime Time Cafe and we did with virtually no wait. The hostess said things had been quiet for a couple of weeks.

DAK
We caught the bus over to Animal Kingdom arriving around 1:30pm.

A quick check of the status board showed that the Safari only had a 20 minute wait, so we went there first. There was a brief delay because of an animal on the road, but the whole wait was no longer than the posted time.

Next up was EE. When we'd originally entered the park, the wait time was 30 minutes, but by the time we arrived it was up to 45 minutes. However, the actual time was much closer to 30 minutes. And I'm happy to report that it was in "A mode" with full strobe and swooping effects!

We made a quick jaunt over to Dinosaur as it was starting to sprinkle and found a 15 minute wait (even though the posted time was 50 minutes).

Finally, we headed back to AKL for our reservation at Boma. This was my first time dining there and I was NOT disappointed. The food is amazing - and not just the taste, but the presentation as well. My favorites were the carrot ginger soup and the corn & spinach pudding.

Here is the hummus/flatbread station:

And the best part, the desserts!

Our waiter was very amazing and brought us the recipes of nearly every dish. I can't wait to try some of these!

We headed back to MK that night for some leisurely shopping and a few more rides. The park was having EMH that night until 3am, but we wimped out and left around 11:30pm.

Next Up: EPCOT (but it will have to wait until tomorrow!)

I love your TR so far and I can't wait for more!
One question; was the birthday FP worth it? Was it better than having the gift card?

In retrospect, I would have chosen the gift card. Being that it was a Saturday in July, I fully expected a packed park with long queues and thought the Birthday FP would really come in handy. Plus, I hadn't really planned to buy anything. But as it turned out, the lines were short (longest wait I saw was 30 minutes). And once I hit the shops, I lost all control (I spent $77 in the Christmas shop alone - which could have been nearly free if I'd got the gift card)!

Nice night shots of the castle. Looks like the food at Boma is still top-notch, too. Can't wait to see/read more!

Oh, it is! Probably the best meal I've ever had in the World.

Thanks for all of the other comments!!

Day 3 - EPCOT

We got a late start this day as we were tired. Normally, we do the parks for two days and then take a rest day and hang around the resort or go to a waterpark or DTD. But as this was a short trip, we just had to suck it up and plow through the last day.

This was also the day with the longest wait for a bus. I noticed that everytime we arrived at the bus stop (at AKL and at some of the parks), there was a transportation CM tracking which buses were arriving, their frequency and letting guests know how far away the next bus was. Seems that Disney is really trying to improve the bus performance. As it was, we waited about 25 minutes for the bus to EPCOT. And then, because so many people were waiting by that point, they actually had two pull up at the same time.

As a result, we didn't arrive until about 30 minutes after opening. I ran ahead and grabbed FPs for Soarin'. With a return time of two hours away, we jumped on LWTL (5 minute wait) and made our way over to M:S and Test Track. There was a light rain and I hoped it might keep the crowds down but the park seemed pretty busy. We had a 40 minute wait for M:S and Test Track had a 50 minute wait with late afternoon FP returns at 11am, so we did the single rider line.

By that point, it was time for Soarin' so we headed back to The Land, had a quick lunch at the Sunshine Season, and checked out The Seas as I'd not been there since before the big refurb. We didn't go on the Nemo ride as the story seemed quite similar to the one that is shown on the Subs at Disneyland which we saw last summer, but we did look at the aquarium exhibits.

After a quick spin through Spaceship Earth (20 minute wait), we headed into the countries. But first we stopped to sign up my son for the Kim Possible Adventures. THESE WERE AWESOME!

We picked up our Kimmunicator in Italy and our first mission was in Japan. Overall, we did missions in 5 of the 7 locations (Japan, Germany, Mexico, UK and France). We all loved them! The interactive elements that have been added to the countries are so seamlessly woven in to the country that you'd gloss over them unless you know what they are. And I loved that the sent us to parts of the countries that we'd not explored before. I stopped by Guest Relations on the way out that night to give them a big thumbs up and they told me that management is considering adding them to other parks!

We had a lovely dinner at the Rose & Crown and shopped around a bit before deciding that we were just too tired to stay for Illuminations. We all love it, so we were kind of bummed, but the heat and humidity had really zapped us of energy that day and we had to pack for an early morning Magical Express pick up.

Here's a pic I took as we were leaving Future World and heading to World Showcase.

The last morning
Our flight was for 11:05am so we had a 8:05am Magical Express scheduled pickup. We got up and left our room in enough time to check out a few more bits of AKL. There is SO much to see at this resort and there is always something interesting going on here.

The ME bus was about 10 minutes late picking us up, but we were the first stop and the only ones from AKL. I knew we couldn't be the only ones on the bus and sure enough, we stopped at Pop Century to pick a huge group. I'd never been to Pop, so it was cool to see it even if it was only from the parking lot.

And too soon, we were at the airport and facing the worst ride of all - the ride home. :(

This was a short, but sweet trip and truly the best birthday I have ever had. And as they say, been there, done that, going back!!!

Great trip report. Thanks for sharing. I adore AKL. I think it is so beautiful and really love the feel of it. We are eating at Boma for the first time during our upcoming trip scheduled for September and I am really excited, although it is a breakfast reservation instead of dinner. Happy belated birthday!!

Thanks for answering my question. I would have thought the FP was a good choice too. I'll stick with the gift card for my birthday.

We didn't go on the Nemo ride as the story seemed quite similar to the one that is shown on the Subs at Disneyland which we saw last summer, but we did look at the aquarium exhibits.

It is very similar. I think the subs are better, so you didn't miss much.
Thanks for the great report!
