News Big Thunder Mountain to receive full retrack

The only people authorized to share information of this nature publicly are executives and PR. Anyone else is taking a gamble with their job, and in some larger cases, gambling things far beyond that.

ETA: Forgive me if this all comes across as a lecture; it's not intended to be that way. I'd just hate for you or anyone to unintentionally cost anyone their livelihood.
There were a few things I was told years ago. I wouldn't share these things anyway but the person was very clear about the consequences if I did. Needless to say, those things were never brought up again with anyone outside of those conversations. And I don't work for nor do I plan to work for Disney ever. (We're still pretty decent friends to this day though I try not to bug them since they are extremely busy)

A retrack wouldn't surprise me. It's long overdue for a year round park where most of it is exposed to the elements. As mentioned earlier, Space Mountain needs a complete gutting and full rebuild but BTM can get away with "only" a retack and scenery touchups.

I wonder what they are going to do with the transfer track, presumably the walkway to beyond BTM will go behind BTM, which will necessitate reworking the transfer track.

If this happens, makes me think work on Beyond Big Thunder will start quickly. Doesn’t seem like it could be a coincidence and I’d assume they’d want to work on both simultaneously.

3 years doesn’t sound true. Work being done to BTM isn’t shocking though. I got laughed and questioned like crazy in the other thread about the expansion. But I’m telling you guys, Big Thunder is being discussed like crazy and it could be rethemed. As I said over there not saying I think it will be but Disney isn’t afraid to shove IP down our throats and I don’t think any ride is safe personally.
To be fair, Test Track is getting a refurbishment that doesn’t involve an IP.

Now what’s about to be said might be a head scratcher to some, but - a few headliner Disney attractions like Pirates, Haunted Mansion, and Jungle Cruise have become so iconic that Disney made franchises out of them. Then I realized it’s almost like these IP-less attractions became themselves IPs. I don’t count Splash Mountain because that was already loosely based on an existing film. But if a Big Thunder Mountain movie happens like the rumors say, it could follow the same path. I don’t think it’s necessary that the ride gets dramatically rethemed to something from Pixar or other properties because it’s already somewhat of an icon, alongside Haunted Mansion and the others, that could itself become an IP.

You should definitely prepare for an extended closure of BTM. This has been in the planning stages for quite some time now. I don’t believe it will be closed for 3 years but it will be closed for a significant period.

It’s not directly related to beyond big thunder mountain, but it is convenient timing.

I’m hoping they don’t cut the ride upgrades…

You mean RMC is coming in to redo BTM. Imagine the layout they could do with that.
The only way we get a zero-g stall on this is if Bob finds out how much pocket change would fall out of people’s pockets.

I don't know anything about sources or anything like that so I'm not going to comment on that, but can Magic Kingdom really afford to lose another high capacity attraction when they already had Splash off for well over a year and are about to just get it back? Are we really sure they're going to risk putting this down for years on end to retract it? Also, I'm not sure if they would really have to close it down for 3 years just for the reach rack right? Couldn't they do that in phases? I'm no expert on coasters so I wouldn't know. Also, if any roller coaster in Magic Kingdom needs to be retracted, it's space mountain. It needs it way more than Big thunder in my opinion. Not that they both don't need to be done but space needs it way more.

They are going to bring Thunder down for a long time. It will not be 3 years, but it will be significant. The work that will be done needs done. It needs this work more than space needs work.

Once Tiana is open this project can proceed. It has been planned for years.

And then once BTM is up, Space can go down? Then, it’ll be SDMT turn.

All kidding aside, the park pretty much should have one major ride at any time down for refurb to keep everything in peak order. The issue is that WDW in general is so underbuilt compared to attendance that it struggles with these closures. And MK is really the best equipped to have something down.
