News Big changes coming to EPCOT's Future World?

Not certain of exact capacity, but I suspect Connections has a higher count than EU by quite a bit.

While what was built was probably enough on paper, WDI and operations failed to care or consider that:
- They eliminated a massive amount of sheltered space with the demolition of Innoventions West/Club Cool 1.0, Character spot.*
- Guardians spits out massive amounts of people constantly with no post-show area to absorb them, leading to a run on the nearest space, Connections.
- VQ/LL/Genie+ lead to a lot of people sitting around the park.

There’s a lot of wasted vertical space with the Connections restaurant side. IMO, it would had been a smart move to build a mezzanine level over the eastern seating “pod”. The structure for that mezzanine could have even extended out into the landscaped area near UoE & Joffreys to created a covered patio similar to Cosmic Ray’s patios at MK.

In the more realistic realm, I’d try to figure out if the old Computer Central could be put to use ASAP. Either a small sheltered play area for families waiting for those riding Guardians, a queue “pavilion” for a proper standby line, or some sort of auxiliary dining patio for Connections.

* yes this will be alleviated somewhat when Communicore Hall opens. But not enough to fix it entirely.

There's some plans to add food options to the central area once Communicore Hall opens, right? so, that's good in terms of potentially lessening the crunch on Connections but doesn't really solve the lack of indoor space.

The obvious solution to that would be to get something into WoL and include a quick service there (as was previously the case) with seating so there's another indoor option on that side of the park. Particularly around GotG so it is an alternative place for people to go to after/before that ride.

There are strict limitations on the size of a mezzanine. They can only be ⅓ of the area of the larger space they are within. Once you start adding in the required stairs and elevator you really start to limit your gains. The problem though isn’t just seating capacity, it’s kitchen capacity.

When both Commicore/Innoventions buildings were still there and the first rumors about re-doing the area were around, I thought it would be nice to put a glass roof over the central area so it could be shelter from rain, etc. Too late for that now.

There is nothing in the daytime that makes this new area feel unique or special at all and the rust looking pieces are opposite of the feeling they should be going for.

I’m aware of the restrictions on a mezzanine as my day job is being an architect. It’s definitely not the cheapest or easiest solution, hence why I said they should look at Computer Central for expanded sheltering.

The main issue I was addressing is the excessive crowding that strikes anytime it rains. Not the long waits for a cashier, that’s a whole different can of worms.

5 years they've been working on this Hub area, its damaged already and the lights aren't working.

Its purely because they've done it on the cheap, no other reason

One thing I was hoping for with this Epcot redo was to modify the "dead zones" in between pavilions in Future World World Whatever to add shade structures. They have the seating/areas to place them in, now just put a roof.

Over the next few years, the parks are going to have to start working on adding shade structures throughout the parks if guests continue this trend of avoiding Orlando in the summer. Surprisingly, SeaWorld has been the first one to start implementing shade structures in their parks.

Solution: Reopen the WoL/Play pavilion with a new family friendly ride, shop, dining area, and theater.

It'd provide both cover and things to do.

Even with some sections not working out not working fully, it's still impressive.
Some of the lighting working at night time is better than the experience in this area in the day time, unless you want a nondescript place to charge your phone and sit, reflect and contemplate life (in between the Communicore construction noise.) ;)

Having said that, I am looking forward to standing (or sitting) in a place that was walled off for (4?) years.

So I had the chance to visit World Celebration Gardens yesterday. I will gladly take it over what was there previously (circa 2009 onward): concrete, few trees, a bizarre canopy, a pin station, and oh yes, a fountain. The one redeeming item from the previous iteration was the fountain. This they should have kept. A fountain would make this area that much more enjoyable. There is something about the sound of water that is relaxing - something I assume they were going for. Was just at Pandora today, and the sound of running water is omnipresent. It just makes me want to stop and relax for a spell.

I’ve seen some people argue that a fountain would have obstructed views of the light show from SSE. Well, if one visits the Moana JoW attraction, it is pretty obvious that the flow of water can be controlled. So yes, this feminine planter should have been a fountain.

Had that happened I would have given top marks. I love the abundance of seating, in numerous styles, everywhere. There is a communal feeling in the gardens, something that, to me, is very Epcot-y. When I see this area, I want to get some food or a coffee and just relax in one of several aesthetically pleasing locations.

And the music is now my favorite WDW music loop. The approach is similar to what Beethoven would do - take a simple theme and replay it over but in different ways, always adding to it. Now before I get jumped on: no, I am not comparing Pinar to ol’ Ludwig van. Just saying she takes her several note Epcot melody and reinvents it through the entire piece. Some do not like that but I really happen to.

I have yet to see it at night but am disappointed to hear the lighting effects are already not working. Under Iger’s reign though, that does not surprise me. They probably have so many metrics that tell them the minimum number of maintenance workers needed to support a park. Also, if the design of these were not robust, that is also Imagineering to blame. But maybe when one of your most visible Imagineers seems like a textile fanatic, that might explain something. Sorry, but the exodus of great Imagineers and Iger’s thoughts on how to maintain a park just irks me.

On the whole though, I do love this area. I love how it doesn’t cost extra to enter, there is no IP, and it is a beautiful spot to take a break. And I actually blame the lack of a fountain on Chapek. That just seems like a cost cutting move that he would do.

Something I just realized today is the new music loop is somewhat dynamic: the instrumentation is different in the normal green speakers around the area (it sounds a bit more “simple” compared to the speakers in the EPCOT logo planter which use more instruments overall. An example of this is the part of the loop that’s pretty much the full EPCOT Anthem, the garden speakers use a single violin for the main voice, however the central planter speakers play a full string section for the same melody. It’s pretty cool hearing the subtle changes as I walk around the area honestly. There may be even more changes in different areas that I haven’t picked up on, but this is what I’ve noticed today.

NINE (9) sections of the logo are completely off tonight. I’m sorry but it’s really unacceptable at this point and I’m starting to worry that it will not be fixed, or that if it is fixed, it will continue to break and not get enough attention until they just give up. For the record I really enjoy the new area but there are no excuses for this to be happening almost a week after opening.

Terrible. We HOPE its software related and not water getting into the hardware.

Could you imagine the have to put the WALLS BACK UP to tear out the lights to replace them!!!

I would not be surprised.

The ones that are still working were fading in and out the entire EPCOT Anthem show and with incorrect colors at that. They need to get a grip
