News Big changes coming to EPCOT's Future World?

In a presentation today, Josh D’Amaro said that EPCOT will play a major role in their spending of 17 billion dollars at WDW over the course of 10 years…

Hopefully this means Phase 2 of the overhaul will happen?

Regardless, things like Spaceship Earth 5.0 absolutely need to happen in the next few years.
Do you mind sharing a link to that presentation if there was one? Would be interested to hear what else was discussed

I wondered about that. Lots of ways to account for that spend. So, that doesn't mean new projects (despite how needed they are). Everything coming online that's under construction could be counted in full.
Indeed. Both current and future projects.

From my reading of Disney financials over the years, that $17B figure thrown around is just Bob throwing out the usual capex figure. It wasn't to imply that there would be a large number of brand new attractions.

It also includes what's coming online in FY2023 (which started last October). And it also includes rethemes. And some or all of the D23 Blue Sky stuff.

Spaceship Earth, Imagination, Wonders of Life, an interior refresh of The Land & The Seas, and 1-2 new things in World Showcase are all pretty necessary to the long-term health of the park.

100% agreed... but do we reallyyy want to see what Disney would do with those pavillions if given the chance?

I think one of EPCOT's greatest strengths is the diversity of its entertainment offerings. You've got thrill rides, dark rides, full-scale aquariums, World Showcase, various food and beverage options. But its greatest weakness is how dated it feels in a lot of areas. One reason for that is the initial construction of many of the park's pavillions. But another is short-sighted decision making at the end of Eisner's tenure that resulted in cheap overlays, like what happened when Seabase Alpha became Seas w/ Nemo & Friends. Last time I was there, Nemo had a 5 minute wait. I'd wager a refresh that doesn't include Nemo could probably get significantly higher guest satisfaction and wait times while also fostering good will amongst long time parks fans who never cared for the change in the first place. I mean even if they just made it a nicer aquarium inside and out, I think most guests would prefer it to what now feels kinda tacky.

I've only been on Nemo once, but I walked straight through the queue and boarded without seeing a single other human.

I mean, I say yes. You can’t do anything worse than the literal nothing that Wonders of Life currently is or the figurative nothing Imagination essentially is. For The Land and The Seas, I’m just asking for the common areas to be refreshed, so nothing would be irreversibly damaged, and again, can’t do much worse than the carpeted walls, ugly murals, and cafeteria aesthetic that blight The Land in particular. Anything proposed for World Showcase should be net new, leaving only Spaceship Earth at risk since there’s still a glimmer of the excellence of the original; still, that needs to happen if only to ensure the ride system isn’t irreparably damaged.

While I will agree they allowed the attractions to be come stale by not updating, I do not think the initial design and construction of the pavilions caused that. The architecture, like that of John Hench's Tomorrowland, only feels dated through our current lens...and like Tomorrowland, they could repaint everything white and wow! it looks forward thinking, and fresh... Which we have also seen with the refresh of the Communicore building they did not tear down... There is too much hate for the architecture...which was not the culprit... Paving over the central core gardens and green areas was...Not updating and occasionally refreshing the attractions was...but the outward design architecturally was pure and futuristic and beautiful and honestly still stands up.

Except for Innoventions West lol
sadly, No... It could have been saved and repurposed...only removing what was necessary for the un-necessary Moana thing.
Heck, parts of the Moana-thing could have been indoor and air conditioned... which would have been awesome... The project would have also probably have been completed 2 years ago...lol

Journey of Water could have been built between The Land and The Seas where it would have connected the two like so many expected.

I seriously think bringing back old Imagination or something very similar could save the entire park if done right. That ride was up there with Tiki room, small world, Pirates, and Haunted as an original Disney ride

It was a CORE part of Disney that is now lacking severely.

Epcot is an example of how you can ruin the character of an entire park by changing too much. Also I'm SERIOUSLY sick of IP attractions and ZERO original ideas. It shows a HUGE creative block on the part of the parks team. It shows that they are not creative at all in fact.

That would have made so much sense on every possible level.... I am baffled at the moving of it up to the central core...where it looks like some strange piece of the Animal Kingdom or Adventureland was accidently dropped...and worse, these mistakes are not fixable... We will have this odd mini piece of a Polynesian Splash Pad and Water garden thing in the central core of EPCOT now for the life of the park...
and the sheer amount of years it has taken to complete these projects is ridiculous... They built the entire EPCOT Center theme park in 3 years...We have already passed three years since the demo was complete and they have still not completed the central core...
