This has two answers....

THE best place to have dinner is Hollywood Brown Derby -- its not only the best restaurant in DHS, it's one of the three best restaurants in all of WDW...

BUT

The best place to dine with the kids is 50's Prime Time Cafe -- decent food, great atmosphere, and the kids will LOVE it....but the food is NOT the high quality that you get at HBD.

I guess I am the only one in the past few years that have had more than one bad experience in HBD. Mama Melrose, however, perfect every time.

This isn't the place to argue about HBD -- there was a short period of time a few years back where it's quality slipped...but the last 18 months have been exquisite....we have plenty of other threads on that.

Food in general is bad topic around here when it comes to HS...we tend to only eat at Mama Melrose or 50's Prime Time. Both (for us) tend to hit or miss but very do able. We will never go back to Hollywood and Vine..we just flat out did not care for anything about the place. HBD.....we also did not care for and too many other choices for 2 credit dining we would rather go to.

My personal opinion is that, if you are *required* to eat at DHS, and food quality is a concern, Brown Derby is the only place to eat. If atmosphere is your concern, 50's or Sci-Fi are your best choices. Sci-Fi is bad if you have more than 2 people AND you don't like sitting staring at the back of your dining partners. But, it's a neat experience once. Personally, I never both with any Italian meals at WDW as there are so many Italian restaurants near me where I live that Italian just isn't special. I have only eaten at Mama's once, and it was a spontaneous late lunch and it was OK.

All that being said, I do try to get to DHS early in the AM, have a snack for lunch, and then leave DHS for dinner in another park (usually Epcot, of course).

Sci Fi Dine In is fun for atmosphere and food is OK, but if you want high quality food, the Brown Derby is the place to go. Great steaks and famous for their cobb salad and grapefruit cake.

My favorite is Hollywood and Vine. I like it because it's a buffet, and I simply love those BBQ meatballs at the kids section :p There's also a dessert buffet with a soft served ice cream machine. It's not one of the very pricey restaurants either, unless that's changed in a year...

So I negate that it is not the best place after you state that it is BUT this is not a place to discuss that? Kind of contradicting don't you think? It seems it would be as it is revelant to the topic at hand, which restaurant venue provides the greatest dining quality in the studios.

Ahh, yes, the last two times I ate at HBD was this year in May and in August. The quality is not there for the prices whatsoever. This year is not the first time I have had bad experiences there. My family's bad history at that restaurant is years long but we give it the benefit of a doubt at least once a year.

As for a restaurant that has delivered quality and food for over 25 visits by my family in the past five years, Mama Melrose.

With girls that age I might simply opt for the 50's Prime Time. Reasonable food, and an atmosphere that may be just right for your family. It's good fun. The place looks like a charm, with it's 1950s decoration. The milkshakes are great, the deserts colourful and sweet. Just the place for a family dinner.

It is also an experience you can't get outside of Disney - unless you have slightly weird relatives or some such. One can eat great Italian food anywhere, or dine in beautiful setting. But the 50's Prime Time borders on a theater show. Together with the Sci-Fi it is the most theatrical restaurant in the Studio's.

I ate there two months ago. Here's what the place looks like for real, in a non-glamourous picture. Sorry for the blurry shot!

We are not fans of any of the table service restaurants here. If we had to pick one we'd prob go with Sci Fi BUT it would need to be lunch, the menu is just better for us

I like the sci-fi diner myself because of the atpmosphere and the food is good. The feel of the restraunt is amazing and the kids will love the fact they get to watch tv and sit in a car.

I believe there is now an all-day menu for Sci-Fi, not a separate lunch menu and dinner menu.

We always dine at 50's and it's always been REALLY good. The pot roast is awesome! We've eaten there many times and have never had a bad meal. And the atmosphere is really great too.
