I can't help but feel a bit sorry for the man. 5 minutes into his Popehood and they're saying, "OK, you're old, so you're like, the transitional pope, until we can figure out what direction we want to take."

God bless him!

Our church is pretty liberal and we've been known to bend a few rules here and there. I don't think that's going to change any time soon, but only time will tell.

Please remember that John Paul II was not a popular choice. Many people thought the cardinals had made a terrible mistake and yet we are now talking about sainthood for this man.

May God bless & watch over this new Pope, Benedict XVI.
Yeah I remembered that.

I still say we need to give this guy a chance. He was the right hand man of Pope John Paul II and he knew him the best. Oh well...

I am deeply disappointed with the decision that the cardinals made. Ratzinger's views are quite well known on varied topics such as women in the church, priests marrying, birth control, as well as his opposition to the 2000 Jubilee theme of asking forgiveness for the transgressions of the church.

I am also deeply alarmed by his belief that the priest sexual scandal in the US and elsewhere in the world is nothing but a made up scandal to discredit the church. His response that those priests that were caught molesting children simply didn't pray enough is simply jaw dropping. I look forward to his taking an active role to punish those priests who committed these heinous acts, as well as those who worked to cover their crime.

I also wonder if he will continue the policy laid out by Pope John Paul II of opening discussions between different faiths. Pope John Paul was noted for his belief and practice of having dialog with Jews and Muslims. I think this is an important policy to carry on. I wonder if it will continue since Pope Benedict's belief in the primacy of the Catholic Church is well known.

I am willing to step back to see what kind of pope he shall make. Everyone deserves a second chance. And he is no longer Cardinal Ratzinger of Germany, a member of the Catholic curia, but now Pope Benedict XVI. Hopefully, the Pope of the people. I hope.

I agree. How sad for him. It's like people are saying, you're old, you're going to die (and hopefully soon). It's a huge honor to have the Cardinals elect you to lead the chuch and then burst your bubble when the reporters have their say.

Down here he'll be known as Bento XVI. We have Benedito and Bento, but apparently they went with Bento because Ratzinger was born on April 16th, São Bento's day.

Bento? They named him after a Japanese lunchbox? ;)

They're not like Dave and David, but they both mean the same thing: blessed. I guess we must have gotten Benedito from Spanish at some point. Like we have "abajur" from French for lamp or "smoking" from English for tuxedo.

This is my 4th Pope...Paul VI was pope when I was born...then there was John Paul I...I was 4 months old when John Paul II was elected. And now my son is 4 months old with the election of this new Pope.

May God Bless Pope Benedict XVI!
