Back in my day...

I could sit for hours in a beautiful club, filled with wonderous artifacts, and listen to intrepid adventurers tell tales of their amazing exploits.

Back in my day...

-You could tour the waterways of the MK in a Swan Boat

-There were 2 resorts to choose from

-You took most of a day to do a land

-Dining reservations for EPCOT were made the day you ate there, via a touch-screen kiosk

-You could buy a flint lock gun without an orange barrel on it

-The fountains of adventureland had water in them

-You could smoke wherever you wanted

Remember when you hear stories from grandparents or parents about things about in their day? I thought we could have fun with this concept and make a joke thread out of it.

here are some examples:

Back in my day, the Tower of Terror had lap bars!
Back in my day, The Pirates would chase women around!
Back in my day, There was no such things as Fastpasses

obivously being 23, i could only think of recent things, but i want to see what other people can think of! :drevil:

Just out of curiousity am I missing something? I was at Tower of Terror in September 2009 and it had lap bars. Are they removed now? I can't imagine.

back in my day

how far back can i think,

The frontierland train station was across from peco's bill's only a few steps to get up to it
the monorail doors had to be shut by hand
you HAD to sit on the monorail
there was no MGM/HOLLYWOOD studios
There was a quaint little resort called THE DISNEY INN with a snow white theme to it
there was NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO dvc or DVC kiosks every 30 feet in the park
there was NO FASTPASS & you dealt with it
There was a one one journey through the skies of tomorrowland & fantasyland
there was NO stitch OR ANY pixar in the parks
Adventureland veranda was open for business
there were NOT fireworks or parades EVERYNIGHT in MK except during peak seasons such as summer, spring break, christmas

I think there was narration on the ferry over to MK way back when. Thought it told you how there was water from many different places poured into the lagoon and how the lagoon was all manmade, etc. It was the start of the
80's decade so I could be wrong. I do remember wearing those cool knee high tube socks with three colored circles on them, awesome socks!

Just came to me... you could sit in with the Pilot on the monorail and get your license, miss that.

I'm 26

I waited all day for spectromagic
at 9 o'clock EVERYONE left the parks
A real alien resided in tomorrowland, not a smelly trouble maker
my kids could splash at pooh's
Ariel was stuck in a funky grotto
You could actually take your shirt off and ride splash in a swimsuit
Test track was hit or miss
Spaceship Earth wasn't DIY
I had a War in the Body
Ellen's EA attracted a huge crowd
You could watch Tarzan instead of a bunch of adults in tight PJs jumping around with
oversized puppets
The monorail is an attraction not just a mode of travel(or a fire hazard at the end of the day)
You could walk through the castle at any time
I spent a day at MGM studios
I was accidentally shunk at an award show
I could eat chinese food over near tomorrowland
Disney busses were new
The backlot tour was just awesome
I was duped into The Chronicles of Narnia failure
Children under 3 could eat ice cream without a shirt on and not get yelled at
Tower of Terror had lapbars with a suicide seat
Fantasmic was every night, twice a night.
Resorts had specific mugs and food
Merchandise was better quality and more diverse
you actually got something for riding with the pilot(my kids got nothing)
You knew part of the trip was waiting in lines. Lines weren't hitting 2hr marks either

A trip to the world didn't cost more than many people's mortgages. You definitely didn't spend almost $100 for 1 day at 1 park. I remember tickets being $55 a day. I can remember $43 a day. I can actually remember $37 day. WOW.... :O lol

You could enjoy shops on both sides of the concourse at the Contemporary.
You could watch a movie in the game room theatre and see a broadway show at Top of the World.

You could sit on the front porch and eat a leisurely breakfast at the Town Square Cafe (Tony's).
You could eat the best breakfast buffet ever at Minnies Minnihuene.
You could eat a character meal at Empress Lilly.
You could watch hot air balloon races lift off from around the Seven Seas Lagoon.
You could get a Monte Cristo at Columbia Harbour House.
You could play skee ball or have your picture done in characature in the Contemporary gameroom.
You could swim in the lake water.
You could ride a train in Fort Wilderness.
You could eat at Tangaroa Terrace at the Poly.
You could see America in 360 degrees.

There was, but you had to be inside to hear it (as I remember).

back in my Day.. there were BIG TREES.. including one probably 200 years old before you went through the main gate at Magic Kingdom..

Back in my day.. I went 20K under the sea and was amazed..

or dropped to the ocean floor in the hydrolators in Living Seas..

Communicore EAST AND WEST..

in Pirates the Pirates chased the women, and the song was a touch more risk'y.. so was the original Alladin song.. with Robin Williams..

the cannons fired rubber balls in Pirates.. and the flew over your head and landed in the water..

THe boat in Norway came way out of the opening.. and the scary troll was ON THE CEILING.. not on the ground.. and it scared the crap out of you..

I really enjoyed the CM's Doing MAGIC TRICKS IN THE MAGIC SHOP on Main street..

Hot dogs cost $1.25 at Casey's and in the American Adventure..

there was a different , out of the way restaurant in MGM with a cast member referal.

in my day.. Everyone Clapped and sang with the Bears.. and went into the MILE LONG SALOON after ward..

in my day.. you were afraid to ask for money for an extra E TICKET.. just because it was like $1.25 for the ticket alone.. and you couldn't combine A tickets to earn an e ticket..

in my day Turkey Legs cost less then $5..

in my day the Diamond horseshoe Saloon put on a show to BEAT THE BAND and you couldn't get in there with a crow bar..

in my day.. no one ever had a bad day at Disney.. both you and your parents were on their best behavior at all times..

In my day you were proud to wear Mickey Ears at all times.. even when you got home..

in my day Horizons was a GREAT RIDE..

and you could get sick to your stomach in the making of me.. or looking at a blue script that spelled GREEN..

in my day there was only one Park for the longest time.. and THAT WAS DISNEY WORLD.. because there wasn't anything else..

you could watch black and white cartoons on main street..

You could see a true OSCAR up close.. or the Ruby slippers.. the REAL ONES.

Jim Henson was alive.

Michael Eisner , Frank Wells, and Jeffery Katzenbeg , had a vision.. and worked well together..

Michael Eisner was more respected then Donald Trump. and MORE BELIEVABLE.

in my day Bean Counters in the business end of Disney World, didn't have much say in the progess of the parks..

parking was a dollar..

Every ride and almost every concession stand was sponsored by SOME ONE..
Kodak, Coca Cola, Eastern Airlines, an ice cream company, GM..

first Eastern and the Delta were the official airlines to Walt Disney World.

in my day we got a four room suite, Free Breakfest and a TANKFULL of Gas when we left our hotel for $30 per night.. Days inn and Lodge.. Florida Mall area , right on the bee line.. and OBT.. and the place was new and packed with people..

You could get great buffet at China Jade.. including ICE CREAM..

Big Mac's were two for $2..

You listened to Disney CD's for 3000 miles in the car and loved every minute of them..

Your kids behaved like no one's business, because they WERE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD.

You could shock you kids, by "missing a turn" and going to Universal for a day, having already boughten the tickets..

in my day, a guy from New Jersey could question what "kind of fish " is a manatee with a CM, for 10 minutes , not realizing that a manatee is not a fish.. and then blaming the CM for not giving him the correct answer..

in my day you could put your kids on a matress in the back of a suburban and have them sleep a good portion from Wisconsin to Florida..

in my day You couldn't CONVINCE your wife, that these big road side Orange places that had "bags of oranges for $x, " was a bait and switch place.. until she had been to two of them. .

in my day, you could drink as much free juice as you wanted when you first came into Florida at the State info center..

in my day, NASA was a day trip from Orlando, and wasn't half of what it is today.. but the feelings were so much more real, since the moon landings were taking place..

in my day.. you could drive through orange groves.. see guys picking oranges, stop, offer them a six pack of beer, and then pick about 500 pounds of oranges for free.. and trust me , my two grandmothers were along.. and they were the worst.. and I found oranges in the floor of the station wagon for months later.

in my day, Silver Springs and Cypress Gardens were in the same esteem as Disney World.. and had tons of business..

and in my day.. King Louie was on the jungle cruise and the rocks fell into the water as you went into the tunnel to get away from him..

We stayed at Port Orleans, Dixie Landings was the "other" place.
The Paper plates, cups, and napkins actually said "Port Orleans" on them! What a great souvenir!
The refillable mug was themed to your resort only, was forever, at any fountain, not just your resort till you left.
There was a really "cool" igloo in EPCOT with a frozen cave man inside.
There were souvenirs for sale that you could only get if you went to Walt Disney World.
I really enjoyed going to MGM.
There was no hat in MGM blocking the theater.
I got to ride in a submarine.
You went to the Comedy Club in DTD and were shocked how they could get away with lampooning everything Disney. And they got away with it!
Those steel strollers were real people movers! One hit in the Achilles tendon or shin and you moved!
People were pushed in wheelchairs and you let them go past. Nobody was running you over in a scooter!

- Illuminations that had more fireworks and more emphasis on the individual countries (good enough for us to go out of our way to leave another park and come over to watch it)

Agreed! WAAAAAY too much emphasis on the boring globe. I miss the country callouts and all the cool fireworks. Get rid of the globe that takes up half the show with images no one can really see, and put back in cool laser affects and real fireworks.

In my day, we walked uphill BOTH ways through the snow to ride Space Mountain!

I'm 24...

In my day, you could buy toy rifles and pull the orange cap off and make it look like a real gun (not this stupid blue and red-colored crap).
In my day, the CMs on the Great Movie Ride actually gave a darn.
In my day, no one was really sure how the Animal Kingdom was going to be recieved.
In my day, Tower of Terror had Rod Serling come on at the END screen to wrap up the post-show!! (Not many people remember this!)
In my day, I was picked to ride on a giant bee in front of a blue screen on the Backlot Tour!!
In my day, attractions were more than just putting people in front of a screen and saying "This is real!"
In my day, no one wanted to see Monty Python at Epcot. :zipit:
